In celebration of the 2014 Surfing magazine Swimsuit Issue, we got in touch with one of the four gorgeous models the mag took to Aruba for the shoot. Earlier in the week we got a sneak peek at Megan Irminger, and now we're having a chat with 20-year-old Rachel Thomas from Dallas.
How did you get into modeling?
When I was in middle school, I went to a modeling “camp” where they taught you some basics about how to walk and pose. After the camp ended, some of the people in charge told me that I should seek out an actual agency, so I joined a Dallas model search in 2008. I eventually became a finalist, and afterwards I was signed.
What do you do besides model?
I am dedicated to staying fit, so I do plenty of pilates. Another huge interest of mine is electronic dance music; it's what I listen to when I'm running to castings, and I even attend a lot of festivals for it, like EDC [Electric Daisy Carnival]. Last but not least, going to sporting events. I have season tickets to both the Knicks and the Rangers here in NYC, so Madison Square Garden has pretty much become a second home at night.
What was your favorite part about the Surfing magazine shoot in Aruba?
I absolutely loved it all—the location, the team, all the outfits, and especially the weather. It was four days in paradise!
Are you a surfer? If so, where's your local spot?
I’m not a surfer girl just yet; in fact, before I started modeling and going on beach locations, I was terrified of the ocean. My family usually took trips to the mountains, so I was never around water much. I could probably eventually learn to surf, but I’m still getting there. By then I’m sure I’ll find my “local spot.”
What’s the secret to looking so good in a bikini?
Confidence. I think the experience of modeling for so long has given me much more of it, and staying fit always helps me feel self-assured.
What’s your guilty pleasure? We all have them …
Regular Coca-Cola—none of that diet stuff!
Advice for an aspiring swimsuit model?
Practice posing in the mirror; don’t be shy about it. Also, work out and stay fit so you’re always in shape for this kind of shoot.
Secret and/or hidden talent?
I'm very flexible, since I used to be an active gymnast and cheerleader when I was younger. I can do a pretty impressive scorpion pose.
