Sports:BMX Website: | Promote Women's BMX for X Games 18! The girls of BMX have been coming out of the woodworks and putting to rest the "silence" of the female riding community that I think came from some sort of embarrassment within the scene. For some reason girls who rode BMX practically kept it a secret. Well, not anymore. There are a lot of dudes on bikes and it seems like the majority of them film videos for the internet and expose their riding in some way or another. For the girls, it is definitely a minority. Things are starting to change, however, and the internet has been more than welcoming to the girls (besides the obvious trolls, obviously) putting themselves out there and, most importantly, trying new tricks. Girls often quit action sports the minute they see the falls getting too hard, which is acceptable considering some girls don't have the body to take those kind of falls. Despite that fact, girls have been pushing the limits and taking the hits that come along with it. Skateboarding has seen an amazing influx of female skaters and it's quite evident in the summer X Games, action sport's biggest competition. This year, crowd favorite Marisa Dal Santo took the gold from previous winner Alexis Sablone in an epic final that could have gone either way. It was exciting and held true to what action sports is about, self expression and doing your best. The same ideology is expressed more than ever in the recent female division at the BMX Masters in Germany (scroll to the bottom to watch a video of it). Just as the girls have taken skating to the X Games, I have no doubt that the girls of BMX can take their talents to the big stage that is X Games. Skateboarding wasn't the only female feature in this summer's X Games. Moto X and the newly introduced Endurocross also featured women's divisions. I believe that if a first time discipline can feature a girl's division so can one of the original X Games disciplines such as BMX. Angie Marino of Yeah Zine has been heading the promotion for Women's BMX in next summer's X Games. Be it an expression session or a full fledged competition, Angie just wants to see the girls get the spotlight they deserve and the online BMX community agrees. So check out Yeah Zine and look out for Angie promoting the cause at Interbike next month. Channels: Bike | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
