Recently had a little Q&A with the creator and founder of Neff Headwear.
No longer known for just their beanies and hats, the Co. has expanded into jackets, watches, gloves etc.
Neff is located by the shores of sunny Southern Cali. with many talented people that stand behind them like Kolohe Andino, Greg Lutzka, Snoop Dog, Chas Guldemond, Jordy Smith, Scarlett Johanasson plus many more. This brand has created a clothing culture that is youthful, colorful and alive.
Lets have a peek inside the Brains behind the Brand: This is the Neff Experience…
State your name (nickname) and your business-
Shaun Neff, everyone calls me Neff. CEO of Neff Headwear.
Age?
32
How did you get into your business?
I’ve always been intrigued with branding and with the surf/skate/snow lifestyle and culture. I love to surf and snowboard and love the whole fashion element of the business. It was always a dream of mine to have a surf/skate/snow brand so I just went for it without much knowledge on how to actually do it. I’m lucky it worked out.
What inspired you to start Neff and when did you realize Neff could be more..
Loving this industry and loving the youth culture, I wanted to do all I could to try to make a little spot in this world.I remember one time I was listening to my radio in the car and a few the biggest songs of 2010 came on in a row – Snoop, Lil’ Wayne, Katy Perry, and Far East Movement. In all of those music videos every artist was rocking Neff. I just remember going “wow, this is gnarly”. That’s when I started realizing it could be more.
Describe your typical “Day in the life”
I like to get up no earlier than 8am and pop into the office, answer 100 or so emails and then attack whatever is on my plate that day. I like to put most of my energy into design and creatively driving the company, but because we have grown so fast I get caught in business meetings a lot. It’s definitely not as fun, but it has to be done.
You have alot of people reppin for Neff. Pro athlethes like Kolohe Andino, major musicians like Snoop Dog and Movie Stars such as
Scarlett Johansson, Is there any one in particular you have met that made you starstruck? If so Why?
It’s humbling and crazy to meet all the different personalities and celebrities that have been rocking Neff. From Lil’ Wayne to Matt Damon and all walks of life, it’s amazing. I’ve been interacting with Snoop for a couple years now and I see him about once a month. Every time I’m in a meeting with him or hanging out with him I can’t help but think how crazy it is that I’m working with the person that me and my friends grew up listening to all the time.
Favorite sports?
My favorite sport that I like do to is surfing, but I’m a huge NBA and NFL fan and I also am into college sports. Just hyped on sports all around.
Favorite athlete?
Michael Jordan
Favorite music/musician?
I’m down with so many different musicians and music genres that I can’t pick one.
Favorite word or phrase you overuse?
Freak
Inspiration for the brand? Inspiration by outside sources, music, art, TV shows, etc
I basically grab inspiration from everywhere I go. If I’m at a restaurant I’m looking at fonts on the menu, the color of the carpet, art on the wall, and what the people in the restaurant are wearing. I’m constantly grabbing inspiration. I also like looking in high-end fashion magazines and children’s coloring books, haha.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words or less?
Never stopping madness
Which talent would you most like to have?
To fly
If you were to die and come back as a person or thing (animal), what would it be?
One of the apostles so I can hang with Jesus.
What things can you never leave home without?
Cell phone
Vision for the future and mission statement for brand? and What is your motto?
I envision Neff continuing to grow and continuing to put out freshness for years to come. I always describe Neff as a gumball machine spitting out endless flavors.
Favorite all time pieces of Neff? and your personal picks for must haves?
My favorite piece is the old school head band I bought from the 99 cent store and branded myself is my favorite Neff piece. It ended up getting on X-Games front and center and it was the first time I ever saw Neff on TV.
My personal holiday pick is our beanies always, because I believe we have the best beanies in the world. For all the shredders, I would say our soft shell jackets and gloves are the best.
