I Would Like to Propose a Toast

By: Nate Hoppes

Travis Pastrana Toast
When I heard Red Bull was going to celebrate the craziest son of a bitch ever I knew I had to be there. Mr. "I do anything Great" Travis Pastrana had his official Roast on Tuesday night at the Avalon in Hollywood. Red Bull went all out for Travis, they had a red carpet, life size pictures, fellow action sports heroes, celebrities that do absolutely nothing in life except appear at events like this, Mini Me, the least funny guy from Flight of the Concords, and of course an open bar with all the red bulls you can drink!

MINI ME

With everyone all hyped up on Red Bull, the night of madness did not disappoint, Robert Pastrana started off the evening talking about his son's lack of luck with the ladies. That seemed to be a constant theme throughout the night. Pastrana may be able to double back flip a motorcycle, jump out of an airplane with no parachute, roll a rally car and be happy about it, but he can't pull a chick if his life depended on it.

It's true though, when you first meet Travis, he might be the nicest and biggest dork ever, but don't let that fool you, he's a crazy son of a bitch. The best part of the night was Pastrana's epic red neck uncle contributing ALL of Travis' success in his career to his love of SNOW CONES. He would finish races as quickly as possible, or jump his bike as high as he can just so he can get a snow cone. So you're telling me, all it takes is frickin snow cones to do what he did, you would think my similar passion towards beer would allow me to achieve such accomplishments, NOPE!

Travis is set to compete at X Games 15 this week in his signature Subaru. Rally is his new passion, and what a surprise, he's pretty good at it, he already has a gold and will be looking to win another. With anything he does, I'm sure he will find some way to take rally to another level, maybe he'll roll it, or even flip the rally car of the 70ft gap?

The night ended with a big announcement, which impacted me directly. I found out where I was going to be spending my next New Years, Pastrana is going to jump his rally car a world record distance in Los Angeles on Dec 31st.

Race Report: Washougal - Lucas Oil AMA Pro MX Championship

By: Chris Worden

With sunny skies above, the world's best motocross competitors invaded the Pacific Northwest and Washougal MX Park for the Motosport.com Motocross National Presented by Yamaha and Scott USA, round eight of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki's Chad Reed, of Australia, took his third win of the 2009 in the 450 Class. Suzuki teammate Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., won his second consecutive race and moved into a tie atop the 250 Class points standings. Honda of Houston's Jessica Patterson, of Tallahassee, Fla., took her first win of the season in the WMX Class.

After returning to the series from a two-year hiatus, Reed entered 2009 without a single 450 Class victory. Now, the two-time supercross champion has three overall wins and appears to be on his way to an inaugural motocross championship with a 65-point lead over the field. On Saturday, he dominated the day's motos, cruising to a moto one victory and working his way from deep inside the top ten to the lead with just over two laps to go in moto two for his second sweep of the season.

"I just put my head down. I didn't even know who was winning," Reed said of moto two. "The sun was setting and coming through the trees and made it really hard to see in some places so I just kept looking for lines. I've just tried to be smooth (and) fast throughout the motos. The 30 minutes is the easy part. Today I felt strong. I just did what I had to do to win."

JGRMX/Toyota/Yamaha's Josh Grant, of Riverside, Calif., finished second overall (5-2) with Monster Energy/Boost Mobile/ampm/Troy Racing Yamaha's Jason Lawrence, of Carlsbad, Calif., capturing his first-career 450 Class podium in third.

Just one week after sweeping the motos to win in front of his hometown crowd, Dungey maintained the momentum to win for the fourth time this season albeit with unlikely first and fifth place moto results. After a moto-long battle with GEICO Powersports Honda's Blake Wharton, of Pilot Point, Texas, Dungey grabbed the moto one win but found trouble in moto two. While battling inside the top five, Dungey fell twice but recovered to bring home the finish that would secure the overall by just one point.

"I made up some ground today," stated Dungey, who won his first career pro motocross race at Washougal one year ago. "I got a 1-5 for first which doesn't usually happen, but it feels good. I need to keep my focus on the championship and today was a good day for that. I hit the ground pretty good and I think I'm a little lucky because I was a little dizzy getting up. I honestly didn't even know I had the overall at the end so it was a good surprise."

Wharton brought home a pair of third place moto finishes to bring home second overall, his first career podium finish, while 250 Class points co-leader Christophe Pourcel, of France, took home third overall (8-1). Through eight rounds, Dungey and Pourcel sit in a tie atop the standings. Dungey has four overall victories to Pourcel's two.

In the WMX Class, Patterson broke Honda Red Bull Racing's Ashley Fiolek's winning streak to take the overall with 2-1 moto results. Fiolek, of St. Augustine, Fla., had won the previous five rounds of the eight-race championship, but settled for second on Saturday. MotoConcetps/ASW/2B Racing Honda's Mariana Balbi, of Brazil, finished third.

"It's about time," said Patterson. "I've been struggling. I made a lot of mistakes in the first moto but we figured some things out in the second moto. It feels awesome to finally be up here."

After a two-week break, the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship resumes with round nine on Saturday, August 15 from New Berlin, N.Y. for the Unadilla Retro National. Same-day coverage can be seen on SPEED at 7 p.m. ET.

Scott Champion gets Factory Ride for the day at Washougal National

By: Chris Worden

VitalMX test rider and aspiring pro racer Scott Champion will have the experience of a lifetime this Saturday at the Washougal National, as he will be calling the Factory Yamaha Semi his personal rig for the day. Racing a Full Factory prepped YZ450F and having the complete support staff of Yamaha technicians at his disposal just as it would be for Josh Hill and Broc Hepler, Scott will get to live out every racers dream, to be a "Factory Rider" even if it's only for the day.

"I still can't believe I'm getting to race a Factory YZ450F. Getting to ride one for a magazine test would be cool enough, but I'm actually getting to race one at Washougal. This is definitely a dream come true", said Scott Champion.

"We're glad to have the opportunity to show the public what goes on behind the scenes of a Factory race team during the race weekend. Even better VitalMX test rider Scott Champion will be living out his dream experiencing it from a Racer's point of view on a Factory race bike", said Racing Team Manager Jim Perry.

Yamaha Contributes $300K Towards Safe OHV Riding

By: Chris Worden

The Yamaha OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) Access Initiative GRANTed more than $110,000 in cash and equipment to ATV riding clubs, national forests, local land managers, recreational conservancy advocates and other members of the greater OHV community in the second quarter of this year. These GRANTs bring Yamaha's total contributions for 2009 to $300,000, and the total contributions to date to more than $985,000, in support of the Access Initiative's mission to promote safe, responsible riding and open, sustainable riding areas.

In addition to the financial support provided, Yamaha corporate employees, field staff and dealer partners have been directly involved in projects in their own respective areas this year. Yamaha corporate employees cleaned trails and planted more than 1,200 seedlings in the San Bernardino National Forest as part of important OHV trail and reforestation projects, and Yamaha's regional and district managers nationwide have stepped in to help potential GRANT applicants identify appropriate projects and funding opportunities.

In this second quarter funding cycle, 12 Yamaha GRANTs (Guaranteeing Responsible Access to our Nation's Trails) were awarded to fund projects that directly impact the access, safety and sustainability of OHV riding areas across the country. GRANT recipients for Q2 2009 include:

Black Hills National Forest (SD)

Clark County Forestry and Parks Department (WI)

Dayton Valley Events Center (NV)

Florida Trail Riders (FL)

Green County ATV Club (WI)

Indian Creek Valley ATV Club (PA)

Public Access Preservation Association (CO)

Portage Lakers ATV Club (ME)

San Diego Off-Road Coalition (CA)

The Cascade Project (ID)

Tri-County ATV Recreation and Rescue Association, INC. (PA)

Van Buren Pine Runners ATV Club (ME)

"Yamaha's commitment to the OHV community, demonstrated by the continued, aggressive GRANT funding and hands-on support, remains strong," said Mike Martinez, Yamaha's general manager of ATV and Side-by-Side Operations. "Yamaha considers it our duty as a leading OHV manufacturer to help support these efforts and ensure that OHV enthusiasts have open access to safe and sustainable riding areas."

The Yamaha OHV Access Initiative funds OHV access-related projects that include, but are not limited to:

Trail development, restoration and maintenance

Trail signage, mapping and map production

Staging area construction, renovation and maintenance

Responsible OHV riding education and outreach

Land stewardship and education

Legislative lobbying efforts

About the Yamaha OHV Access Initiative

Each quarter, Yamaha accepts applications from non-profit or tax-exempt organizations including OHV riding clubs, national forests and associations, and national, state and local government agencies. A committee then reviews each application and awards GRANTs to deserving projects. Applications for the third quarter of 2009 should be postmarked by August 31, 2009.

Josh Hill out for Washougal due to injuries suffered at Millville

By: Chris Worden

Factory Yamaha rider Josh Hill will not be racing this weekend at the Washougal National due to a nagging back injury that he suffered in June, but flared up in the second moto at Millville. Josh has been working with his doctor on therapy and rehabilitation the whole time, but after Millville it was decided missing Washougal and utilizing the two weekend break in the AMA National schedule would give Josh the best opportunity to heal up and be ready to go when the series resumes at Unadilla on August 15th.
