It was the defending class champion Ryan Villopoto that made it look easy and ran away with the win at the opening round of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Series at Anaheim Stadium in Southern California. Are we going to see a repeat of Villopoto's domination at Phoenix and beyond? 12.2 seconds behind Villopoto was TwoTwo Motorsports rider Chad Reed who tried to minimize the gap but was not able to do so before the checkers. It was Red Bull KTM's Ryan..

loon. lacks intelligence. whatever you want to call it. he's the sports biggest attraction and a multi-millionaire. the guy has a big set of balls. couldn't imagine injuring myself as many times as he has and being able to compete and progress the sport the way he has. not a huge follower of the sport but i tune in every year to see what this guy does.
Reply by striker300southpaw July 29, 2010 12:44pm PDTReport Abuse
For you to say the guy lacks intelligence just shows that you know nothing about him. I've been following the guy since he first came into the circuit at 15 as well as when he use to do motocross. He strategizes this stuff better than anyone can imagine, his whole house is full of test equipment to figure out how to do the tricks and all different kinds of bikes setup for different tricks. He may seem crazy, but he knows what the heck he's doing.

It makes me laugh that people insult Travis's intelligence, if any of you actually took the time to read or learn a thing about him his intelligence wouldn't even be in question. The guy has skills on a motorcycle that most could only dream of. Give credit where it's due. If he's good at it then let it be. The fact is that the guy has been training and doing this HALF his life. Watch an interview, read up on him. He's a rare athlete that comes off as a sane guy who is looking to get the most out of his life.
Reply by ian potter July 29, 2010 04:59pm PDTReport Abuse
i wasn't insulting him. i was merely commenting on how he is viewed. my post may have come off negative, not how it was intended. i kept my post short and didn't feel i needed to elaborate on the athletic attributes it requires to manipulate a 300lb bike let alone the human body. i ride bikes; nothing close to this level and fully understand how much training and intelligence his stunts require. i've seen his shows and watched video of him training. the guy was obviously smart enough to bail out of the competition because he knew he wasn't ready. on an ending note, you do have to admit he has a few screws loose. the stuff he does is insane!

To all the critics and detrators out there: SHUT THE @#$% UP! Travis is not a LOON or an IDIOT. He has accomplished more in his 26 years that any of you wimps will ever dream of doing in your lives. Pastrana is a very talented athlete in many fields and is an absolute artist on a motorcycle. Every stunt is practiced to near perfection and all risks are calculated. He is out there pushing the envelop of what is possible for people to achieve. He is a hero and an inspiration--and a reminder that life is meant to be lived--instead of sitting bubble-wrapped in front of a TV playing games and pretending to live the way this guy does every day of his life. He his self-made and has conquered his world with GUTS and GUSTO. He pays for all his risks with blood and bone and has never done anything but succeed!

People, please don't refer to these guys as athletes, they are not athletes they are entertainers. Adrian Peterson, Kobe Bryant, Chris Johnson, Ryan Howard.....these are athletes don't confuse the two. The Pastrana's of the world put on a show to entertain the crowd, athletes compete and are paid to compete not paid to where a Monster helmet while drinkin a Monster while standing in the middle of a Monster logo saying thank you to Monster.

I'm sorry, but your "atheletes" don't risk their lives to "entertain" their crowds and still get paid millions to bounce a ball around. And please, how can you talk about endorsement deals being a detraction when you mention the "atheletes" you chose? What a JOKE!

ath·lete [ath-leet]
-noun
a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.
I'd say what Travis does definitely qualifies as skill.
Just because there is a lack of understanding about what some people do for enjoyment, it doesn't make them an idiot or a person undeserving of praise.
Pastrana's great. I say Rock on, Rockstar.

Gotta love this arguement....the dictionary gets pulled out, the whole money thing thrown in, next thing we know someone is saying WWE wrestiling is real......you three need to relax take a sip of you Red Bull or what ever energy drink sponsors you and relize that the notable entertainers make just as much as some of these so called "money hungry" athletes, there are exceptions but there will always be. Raise your hand if you work in sports.............thats what I thought I work for a MLB franchise and have worked my way up starting in the minors, I've seen what these guys go though to become these so called "money hungry" athletes, hell a majority of these guys desereve every damn bit of that money and if you think your sponsored entertainers are the only ones that are trying and aren't money hungry themselves you are BLIND. If your telling me that Pastrana isn't a millionare and isn't money hungry himself your ignorant. Is the equivilant of athlete signing a multi million dollar contract not comparable to Pastrana signing an endorsment with Red Bull for millions? Plus the many other sponsors himself and entertainers like him have.....it's how they make their millions. If it wasn't for their sponsorships they would make dirt, and athlete can however its one of many main reason that distinguishes between and athlete and entertainer. Athletes get paid to play, entertainers get paid to promote.

lol this guy has obviously never raced a moto or been on a bike for that matter, Pastrana is a very good guy and compared to a lot of the other guys in his sport he is an excellent role model.
Just because he risks himself doesn't mean that he doesn't do it as safely as he can, you won't see Travis without a helmet and proper gear, or the people he allows to be around him.

Let me guess (250 lber) Ok, now this I'm sure will be really hard, so read carefully! Take your girfriend out to the motocross track and try throwing her around for about five minutes. If your arms don't fall off and you are still alive, please respond and tell us all, how that worked out for you!!! You are and idiot! If you have never been on a dirt bike and don't know what it takes to handle and throw one of them around, like these (ATHLETES) do, then you need to keep your Penis Holder shut.

yeah, sorry, bullshit.. ive played sports all through school, mainly footbal and i ride bikes and quads as well.. get your ass on a bike someday and follow a professional rider around.. you wont last twenty mins.. it requires just as much if not more strength, endurance, reaction skills and quick thinking than any other sport.. you cant judge what you dont know, ridin requires more calculations with risk as well, take basketball for example, what do you have to worry about, trippin and scrapin your arm, sprainin your ankle, poppin a ligament, go do some motocross, you come up short on that double, you could land in a coma, or wipeout in the whoops section, and snap your femur and pelvis.. inmy opinion it takes more brains to race or do freestyle than to dribble a ball back and forth across a tiny little court.. and the baja 1000 trumps any sport by far in every category..
Reply by eric kleinberg July 29, 2010 02:56pm PDTReport Abuse
and yes, i know what these players go through and the long enduring practices and the backbreaking mental and physical labor they put themselves through.. but professional riders put just as much practice in, and to stay in the pro level it requires hours of workout training each day with a personal trainer workin your ass off on top of their normal hours of practice each day on their own personal tracks..

Huckdangs, you don't want us to confuse athletes with entertainers, but it appears you already have. Do you think Kobe, Ryan, etc. get paid because they're athletes? Do you think there is gross national product from lay-ups and 3-pointers? No, your athletes get paid because they're entertainers. You also have no clue as to the physical conditioning required to compete successfully in motorsports.

Ahh finally a response to the agruement at hand, appreciate that rib750. All of you can take note that this is how to respond to a debate, no 250lb girlfriends getting thrown around here or assumptions made from what was NOT said by me. On that note: rib750 I can see your pt of view that athelets are paid entertainers I have to make one pt here, professional athletes are paid to play a game that in returns entertains. They are recruited, drafted and signed to play a game that many experts would believe they are very good if not the best at. Each athletes sole purpose is to play a certain game not endorse products while entertaining a crowd with dangerous or difficult tricks. Not saying it doesn't take a certain skill set to do so, I'm not saying that (thats for all you others that responded with irrelavant rebutles).
If these guys are true atheletes then ask yourself this........ I'm assumin you've been to a moto event of some sort, just like a concert the moto events take place a various locations around the country at random times throughout the year so no event is for certain to take place every year at a certain place and time? If no one bought tickets to an event what is the likely hood that the event will still takes place.? Do they do their race, tricks and stunts in an empty arena with no spectators? Now, if no one bought a ticket to say a NFL game or MLB game, do they still play.......yes! They are there to play that game wheather anyone is there to watch them or not. Now if no one paid to see Pastrana or whoever fly through the air would he still do it cause he HAD TO?
Reply by listenup July 29, 2010 04:21pm PDTReport Abuse
Huckdangs, your thought process is so flawed. Every great professional athlete is a sponsored entertainer. And Pastrana gets paid for competitions as well as sponsorships. In fact the reason he's sponsored is because he wins competitions and raises the bar for his sport. I hate people who look at something they're afraid to do, or just wouldn't ever want to try, and say it's nothing. What do you think baseball looks like to somebody who could care less about the sport? Why are so many players fat? Why are the scores so low? Why would you pay a guy millions just to swing a piece of wood? Why would you work for a MLB franchise and work your way "up" starting in the minors? In fact, what does that even mean?

Huckdang, I am not here to talk down on you. I am not here to say you're fat, ugly, and a waist of space. I am simply here to ask you that you watch Travis Pastrana: 199 Lives before throwing out these ignorant assumptions about those "Entertainers" you speak of.
Please, have a bit of intelligence and leave your accusations and assumptions to yourself before handing it on to other people, to only get it thrown in your face and slapped across your cheek.
They are Athletes, and train just as hard as those men you watch on TV drinking from that Gatorade bottle. Oh, bet you never know that in Football, if they do drink from that, they must turn the label out in case a camera is filming them.

How can you "debate" an issue and have no idea what the "other" viewpoint is (you don't seem to know anything about Motocross, Supercross or the X-games which Pastrana has been a part of for the past 12 years)?
Your idea of an athlete is somebody that was "recruited" to perform (uhh entertain?). He / She needs to be part of some league to be an actual athlete. Without leagues and television, even an NFL team would not last long with nobody showing up.
Travis Pastrana and the other athletes that compete in these games came from Supercross and Motocross backgrounds.. Try telling any of them they could gain an extra 20 lbs and play (sure are a good number of NFL and Major league baseball players that are out of shape, but still getting paid). Better yet, take a 45 minute ride on a motorcycle standing most of the time and riding thru 5 foot whoops (I'm guessing you have no clue what that even means.. look it up maybe?)
BTW, the Supercross, Motocross and X-games are scheduled more than a year in advance so they can get the proper Venues. They are held in stadium and outdoor tracks across the country. The sponsors these riders are promoting are products most of them actually use (good luck saying that about most of the NFL, NBA or baseball advertising).
To be honest, I don't have a problem with your liking Baseball or some other sport, but don't start an argument about something you know nothing about.

Forgot to mention, the 250lb fat girl joke was actually a reference to the fact that Pastrana does all of his "entertaining" while throwing around a 250 lb motorcycle. It was probably lost because you didn't know this?
Reply by claybuster July 29, 2010 05:19pm PDTReport Abuse
You are so correct! What makes you such a great debater is your lack of insults. Please refer to your first Post! You were the first to use such and insult, when you said that motocross riders were not athletes. That athletes compete to get paid! If you don't think these guys compete, obviously you have never rode a dirt bike. When I rode in (competitions) we spent hours and hours and hours practicing. You can bet your ass that Kobe doesn't spend 4-6 hours a day practicing a dunk or a lay up. From your comments, I'm just taking a guess, but you have a desk job in a little cubical. You most likely are a liberal democrat considering how shallow you have been with your posts. All I can say is, someday challenge yourself to go ride a dirt bike and I think you will change your opinion on whether they are athletes or not.

As someone who has played, competed and worked in just about every level of sports from being a Division 1 scholarship athlete, 2 sport letterman to playing in the "minors" to working at the highest level in the "front office"... I have to say you are completely out of your element, lack the true understanding of sports, nor know what being a true athlete is all about.
Personally I don't like the "X" sports, but I think the athletes are amazing. The strength, agility, balance, hand-eye coordination, and physical endurance of these athletes that compete at their top level is phenomal. They are professional athletes because they get paid to compete in the sport they love. Trying to follow you "debate" has been difficult since you don't have a concise position of what makes an athlete or a sporting event for that matter.
EVENTS:
In essence are all entertainment. A Moto-cross is a race, the events are schedule a year plus in advance by the sanctioning body (in your case think Major League Baseball) and are held as scheduled whether anyone buys a ticket: Season Points Championship. X-Games events are closer to a concert style event; scheduled by a promoter who: rents the arena, sells the sponsorships, and promotes the sale of tickets. Just fyi, most events are paid for before the first ticket is sold (tickets are generally profit). If you think MLB would last if people didn't buy tickets, think again or think Texas Rangers.
ATHLETES:
Baseball, Football, and Basketball players at the pro level are all great athletes who have trained their mind and body to perform at extraordinary levels. Moto, X-Game, Speedway racers have done the same, they have trained themselves to compete at a level most men and women can only dream of. This dream is why they buy tickets. I wouldn't know any of these athletes if I passed him on the street, but I have seen them compete and BEYOND a shadow of a doubt, these guys are athletes.
Sorry Debate requires facts..

However, I'm glad Mr. Pastrana has decided to not attempt this stunt when clearly he is not in the physical condition or health to do such action.
