Phoenix Arizona for round two of the Monster Energy Supercross Series? The sounds that helped create the sport may return to the stadium in the hands of Frenchman Cedric Soubeyras and under the watchful eye of Moto Concepts team manager David Vuillemin. Currently Soubeyras is said to be signed up to race the SX series from Phoenix to San Diego, in the premier 450/Supercross division. It has been years since a two-stroke's been pushed to the starting line during a Supercross. Yes the freestyle guys have poured a little premix to do some halftime shows, but to go head to head against valves and cams NOW, is almost unspoken. It looks like David Vuillemin's father, Didier, owns and runs his very own performance shop called Reptil, (not in the U.S.) www.reptilracing.com. The younger Vuillemin, David, is saying his pops has built a YZ250 engine that allegedly pumps out 8 horsepower over stock. Now that is a lot of power from a 250cc two-stroke. That being said, as stock YZ250 produces right around 45hp stock, Soubeyras YZ could very well have 53 at the rear wheel.
How Cedric and his YZ250 oil burner will perform come R-2 in Phoenix is still very much a mystery. The kid has skills and likes the light two-stroke. The question? Is racing a 250 four-stroke against a 450 four-stroke like taking a knife to a gun fight? If Soubeyras can make the main event, it could make history and mark the first time a 250, 350 and 450 are all racing the "Supercross" class at the same time. Stay tuned; this could be a good race.
