Supercross Results/Report: Salt Lake City

By: scott hoffman

This is the race that could make or break any one of four riders in the 450 class. Reed and Stewart came out swinging and both won their heat races.

450 Heat 1
1. Reed
2. Windham
3. Villopoto

450 Heat 2
1. Stewart
2. Dungey
3. Millsaps

450 Main:
James came out hard to take the early lead over Chad Reed and Ryan Villopoto. Brayton was in the mix on the first lap but fell back to 6th by lap three. By lap six Villopoto made a move on Reed to take over second. Then Stewart crashes, gets up and then goes down again in the woops: his bike was all bent up. JS was back in 13th at one point.

At the halfway mark, Poto had just over 2.5 seconds on Reed. If Reed wanted the title, he had to beat RV in Salt Lake. With three laps to go, Reed was still a few seconds back and hoping for a RV mistake.

At the finish Villopoto took the win with less than a second gap over Reed. Dungey filled out the podium while Short took 4th, Millsaps 5th and Windham 6th. Jake Weimer returned to the action and in his first 450 race came up with a solid 7th.

RV extends his point lead over Reed.

The Lites/250 title in the West will also go down to the wire - or should we say Vegas. Only two points separated Broc Tickle from Josh Hansen going into the Salt Lake race. Eli Tomac trails the leader by seven points.

In the main, Tomac dominated the night pulling the holeshot then yarding the field by over 5 seconds by the halfway point, then backed it off a tad to win with a few second gap. Points contender Josh Hansen tried to make an early move on Tomac and it failed, Hansen went down and fell all the way to the back. That move very well could and probably will have cost him any chance to earn Pro Circuit another Lites title in the West. Hansen lost valuable points finishing out the night in 13th. Tickle played it a tad safe, finishing a solid third after running second early on. Ken Roczen rode like a champ after racing the GP circuit and had no issues jumping right back into SX mode. If my math is correct, Tickle will go into Vegas with a 2 point lead over Tomac.

Roost Report: Hangtown to Freestone

Stewart showed up at Hangtown looking calm, cool, collected, kicked some butt and took names

The biggest story leading up to the season opener of the Lucas Oil Motocross Championship circled around one James Stewart. Everyone asked, "Will he kick some butt, will he choke, was his problem with SX all in his head or has he landed on his head too many times, will the Suzuki be his saving grace, if he was so fond of the Suzuki starting last year, why did he ride for another team if he says he does not do it for the money," and a slew of other questions. Many of those questions may..
