Metal Mulisha rider Derek Garlands runs in honor of a fallen brother

By: Nate Hoppes

Turning in his bike for a pair of running shoes, Metal Mulisha rider Derek Garland completed the Rock and Roll Marathon in Las Vegas in memory of his fallen brother Jeff "OX" Kargola.
Garland made a prior commitment to Kargola whose life was lost in a tragic accident earlier this year in Mexico. "I told Jeff I was going to run a marathon, so for me, it's a way to finish something I said I was going to do. I can dedicate the marathon to him because I know he'll be looking down and smiling on me."

Garland finished the 26.2 miles in just under 4 hours with a time of 3:55:39. Not bad for a man who normally gets around on his dirt bike. Equally impressive was Garland's ability to complete the endurance race while sporting a giant neck beard.

After the race Garland turned to twitter to thank everyone for believing in him, "Thanks for everyone's positive messages today. I'm feeling so fortunate to have such awesome friends/family!"

Shortly after thanking his family and friends Garland headed to the bar for a well deserved cold one. "This might be the best tasting $7.50 Sapporo I've ever had."

As far as we know this was the first for time any FMX rider took on the challenge of running the 26.2 miles.

Here's pictures from Garland's training sessions.

Many of those questions may..
