Dakar Rally rider Ivan Jakes struck by lightning, still finishes race

According to Motorsport.com, Dakar Rally rider Ivan Jakes was struck by lightning in the Salar Centenario area of Argentina during Stage 3 yesterday.

The Slovakian dirt bike rider was 186 miles from the finish line for the day, but he didn’t let a little lightning stop him. He proceeded to continue racing and finished fifteenth on the stage.

He eventually was taken to a hospital in Jujuy, where he was checked and cleared for competition today.

“Thank God he didn’t put his feet on the ground, because it would have been like a ground wire,” a member from his team told Motorsport.com.

Jakes is currently in eleventh place, and it’s going to take a lot more than some pesky lightning to stop him from going after a Dakar Rally title.
