California surfer receives whale of an escort during marathon paddle

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

When Southern California surfer Jodie Nelson set out Sunday to standup-paddle nearly 40 miles from Santa Catalina Island to Dana Point, she hoped it'd inspire her best friend, who has been involved in a long and exhausting struggle with breast cancer, to keep fighting.

Nelson, 34, whose mother and aunt are cancer survivors, also hoped her nine-hour test of endurance would raise money for two cancer charities and heighten awareness about a plight affecting millions of women.

What Nelson could not have known was that a 30-foot minke whale would swim alongside her 14-foot board and accompany the surfer as she stood and paddled for two of those nine hours, thus joining the cause.

"It was a day that all of us involved will never forget," Nelson said, in reference to Angela Robinson, her best friend, and the rest of a crew aboard an escort boat.

Minke whales are not commonly seen off Southern California, and those spotted by boaters are often elusive. So when a mammal Nelson named Larry joined her endeavor to become the first woman to make this long paddle, she took it as a sign.

"To me it was a total God thing," the San Clemente resident said. "We prayed at 4 that morning that God would reveal his beauty and creation and nature, and allow me to endure this long trek, so for me it's not such a huge surprise that this happened."

Larry did not merely swim close to Nelson. He rolled around repeatedly alongside her and blew bubbles beneath her board. A film crew was on the escort boat and CNN, Fox News and ABC are just some of the networks she says are interested in the story and footage.

Alisa Schulman-Janiger, an American Cetacean Society whale researcher, said minke whales can be friendly but added: "This type of quality encounter is highly unusual."

Nelson raised only about $6,000 in advance of the paddle, disappoingtingly short of her target of $100,000 for the Keep a Breast Foundation and Boarding for Breast Cancer. A few of her celebrity friends let her down, she said, but when this story reaches a national audience she expects the pool to grow considerably.

"I thought, 'I don't need so-and-so,' " she said of a particular celebrity, whom she declined to name. "Because I honestly feel like Larry is going to help us reach the $100,000 mark with our fundraising effort."

Larry or no Larry, completing a standup paddle over 39.8 miles of ocean and sharks speaks volumes about Nelson's strength, stamina and determination.

Larry took her mind off the task for two magical hours, but her mind never strayed from the cause. "I can't even begin to compare what I did to what cancer patients are going through," she said. "But I wanted to put myself out there in a dangerous and scary, overwhelming situation; something that was big and just to show people that you can win that battle with that big, scary thing called cancer.

"I wanted to draw some kind of parallel and just encourage people to keep fighting."

Those wanting to help Jodie with her mission can do so via her page on the Keep a Breast Foundation website.

Indiana kayak fishermen surprised by giant python

Friends chase down the 11-foot reptile that was apparently abandoned by owner

When Dave Neal set out for a day of kayak-fishing recently on Indiana's Wildcat Creek, he could not have imagined the surprise awaiting around a bend, in the form of an enormous Burmese python coiled against the base of a tree.

When the 11-foot reptile began slithering up the bank, a fishing expedition with two friends became a hunting expedition. "I didn't know what to think -- you just don't see this kind of thing in Indiana," Neal told the Journal & Courier newspaper...

No, the story is about Larry and Breast Cancer awareness. Without that amazing encounter with Larry (an answer to her prayers for God to show her the beauty of His creation), she would have $6000 and that would be the end of it save a few straggling donations. Now, this whale encounter has the opportunity to raise significantly more money bc it put Jodie in the national spotlight.

Why do people like you have to be so negative. That was not religious 'pimping' by the journalist. It was a good story. BTW: Minke whales are not normally seen off the cost of Southern California because they prefer icy waters and they have no reason to migrate.

I was moved by the story so much to the point that I wanted to find more information. Oddly, I found a story written by Jodie of the journey with absolutely no mention of the whale. http://www.facebook.com/note.php?saved&&suggest¬e;_id=148781175580

It may be a publicity stunt, or maybe I was reading something unrelated somehow. Regardless, this story does not need a stunt, it simply needs publicity. That is an amazing journey with the best intentions, and I hope that she's able to hit that 100k goal and beyond.

I wonder who the So and SO CELEBRITY BUM is... Expose the Truth!!!

It amazes me how average Americans idolize Celebrities that would never spend even a minute of their free time with any of their Fans...

Just goes to show you how brainwashed everyone is, people should idolize good people like Jodie not the evil mess of greedy Celebrities that just care about making more and more money...

RE: bigmak

It all depends on who the celebrities are. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and others (mostly progressives) not only donate money, but also donate their time to worthy causes (Haiti, Dafur, Katrina rebuild)

And to "Steve Bazer" (who posted at 10:06a) Man can turn something beautiful like this story into a crushing blow to the spirit. Why would you want to that? Sad for you.

Reply by austinite April 2, 2010 10:29am PDTReport Abuse

To Steve Bazer, God did not send cancer nor it is His will. We, human beings, brought harm to ourselves.. Its because of our sin, yours and mine and of the human race, that death adn disease came into the world. God created the world PERFECT and GOOD.. Its because of sin the world became corrupted, we have lived independent of the Creator God that's why its the consequence of our own doing - the food we eat, the things we do, if not within His perfect will, brings harm to ourselves. Dont blame God, you should atleast be thankful that God breathe you life.
Did you not lie, did you not steal, did you not take the Lord's name in vain? Repent for God's judgment will come upon humanity. That is why Jesus came to save us from our sin for we cannot save ourselves and will never will. Only Jesus can save you. Trust in Him today! for you can be sure of your salvation while you are still alive. For cancer and any disease or calamity can never compare to the hope of eternal life that is ahead for those who puts their trust in Jesus. Peace :>

Reply by ttyme April 2, 2010 10:47am PDTReport Abuse

@Steve - God did NOT send the cancer that kills and afflicts so many! If you are going to speak of God - know His word! It clearly says in James 1:17 that "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." Yes, bad things happen in this world filled with sin. But you would have to read God's word to understand the origin of our trouble. Pray and then start from Genesis and work your way all the way through Revelation. While you are doing this - continue to pray with an OPEN mind so that the Holy Spirit can guide you into all truth (John 16:13) so that when you are finished you can say that you will actually be able to sound intelligent because you know with confidence what you are talking about. ( 2Timothy 2:15)

Steve bazer says :
"Jesus was jewish. When the swarthy, curly haired, woody alan-esque little guy comes back will you try and convert him to your ugly pagan religion too? He actually believed in one God, not a Roman God middle-man "Man-God". I'll bet he's still turning over in his grave when he sees the pain and suffering caused at the hands of "Christians". You folks are dangerous haters. Please don't reply to this post. I have no use for your brand of ignorant red-necked."

Yes Jesus was Jewish in decent but he came to earth not only for the Jews but all humanity including you and me.
True Christians are not dangerous but loving people. Although I dont know you Steve but I love you because you are created in God's image. God loves you dearly that He doesnt want you to perish in Hell with Satan and his demons. That is why God sent His son to die on the cross on your behalf because you cannot save your self. God has to find a way to take you back with Him. God's salvation for you is a FREE gift . you dont have to pay for it. Religion, Education, Good works are not the ways that you can be saved. Only the person of Jesus Christ can save you from eternal death. You simply act by faith , repent from all your sins and surrender to Him as your Lord and Savior.
I hope you will heed this advice and hope to see you when He comes back to take true believers to His kingdom.
I know your mom or dad has read you fairy tales and stories while you were little before they tuck you into bed, right? Didnt you wonder why fairy tales and stories touch your heart and all of them have a common theme which is "Happy life, then tradgedy comes, villain appears, Hero comes and fight villain, then Hero wins, then they live happily ever after"? Do you know that deep within our hearts are inscripted the real story of mankind with that same theme?
There will be a Happy ever After Steve.. Now the question is Will you be a part of that? Hope you think about this before you lay to bed

What a humorous fight lol. Get a life losers!! God this!, God that!, WHO cares!!! Give me a break!! Every good thing happens god did it! Every bad thing god did it!! What you are is afraid to take responsibility!! You suck!!! yeah big deal a minke whale swam beside Jodie Nelson. God had nothing to do with that. If anything at all he is only responsible for creating the two! No one can start a war or fight like God our savior!!! Yes I said it! God has killed more people than any one cancer or disease ever! That is not here nor there, but if you read this page all you see is arguments! You are all wrong!! If you want to believe something go for it!! Don't try to sell Stupid to me!!!!

The christians are getting as bad if not worse than the taliban in their fanitical convictions. Look, every religion I have ever heard of believe they are right. making every one else wrong. How is that possible? They believe in their convictions so much they are willing to kill others in the name of it , (what ever it is). Just a clue here, any God ( real or perceived) that condones killing of others to perpetuate their beliefs cannot be seriously considered by the sane as ethically correct enough to follow. Just because some one wants to believe in something does not make it true! or every onw would be right...Believe what you want of course, but do not even remotely suggest o me that that whale is somehow God in disguise! What a crock!!!

Agreed, accept for the Hell and Heaven part. The 144 thousand make it into heaven, while the rest of Jehovah's followers make it into paradise. Hell, though, doesn't even exist! It was used as an example, like the Jew and Samarite. God is loving, and he would not torture even sinners. He says the dead are conscious of nothing, so you can't feel pain when you are conscious of nothing. Life is a gift, and evil-doers and sinners don't deserve that gift.

I'll admit some of these people can be a bit fanatical, but you non-believer are just as big if not bigger douche bags! You morons hate these believers because they have hope. They have fear. They have a reason to try and be decent humans. You not believing freaks have nothing but living life day to day and hold no responsibility for what you do and how you live. Then something like this happens and the religious fanatics have sweet kind things to say about what happened and all you morons want to do is complain and speak ugly. What do you care what they believe or how they believe. If they want to think god sent this whale.... a species that is rarely seen ever.... but decides to show itself at this time....hmmmm makes ya wonder, then so what , let them believe it! I can say, I was raised a baptist christian. I do not follow the taught believes like I should anymore.I have had my doubts and I do have question about a lot of what I was taught in church ( I have my reasons). What I do not do is brow beat anyone based on what they choose to believe and I am not going to spend my time trying to make you see things the way I may see them. That includes believers and non-believers alike. What I will say is the fight against cancer is probably the worst battle we as humans have been in, and I will take anyone's help that comes along whether it be !a lost whale or a very rarely seen miracle of GOD..... Thank You LARRY!!!!♥♥♥

Only thing I have a concern about is if the picture was a hoax. Photo shopped. If that turns out to be the case then someone should have there gentiles flogged!

And really people, I can't tell you how sick I am of religious debate. I'm probably just opening myself up to criticism here, but I'm in highschool as well, and it sometimes feels like I have more common sense than a lot of people. Please, just accept that people are going to interpret the bible in different ways, and keep your hostile comments to yourself.

Thank you cam t for pointing this out... Minke whales are heavily hunted in Southern Oceans. Please for Larry's sake do go to the link Cam t suggested.

You could say Larry's presence was as much a gift as a plea for people to realize what wonderful beings whales are and how much they need our protection. Humpbacks are everyones favorite whales (though there is an effort to end their protection from whaling). Minke's are usually shy and reluctant to spend time around whale watch boats so have not gained the affection and loyalty humpbacks enjoy.

I hope Jody Nelson will give as much heart to this wonderful whale as to her dear friend.

The absolute saddest part of the modern world is the HUGE & growing number of Haters & Discriminaters which literally plague message boards such as this. Here's a wild idea & a personal challenge to those who hate religion & it's believers (like me). I'm willing to bet my next pay-check, and it's a substantial one, at least 50% of people in this thread who are preaching hatred towards the religious CAN'T do this simple task.

You will find it impossible to simply skip ALL future posts which mention religion for the next 30 days, without making a hate-filled comment towards the same. The ones in this thread who are doing it know they despise religion & it's followers. Why waste time reading those posts and throwing in un-called-for rants, discriminating against people who choose to believe? Just go to a post that you DO agree with & discuss THAT. No use lingering around what you don't like.

It's very easy to do. I personally do not condone the life-style choice of homosexuals. I'm not saying it's WRONG, just that I don't personally agree with it. So knowing that, when I see a post with that content, guess what I do .... I just go on to the next one & not post a single bit of hatred or discrimination against them. That's THEIR choice, just as believeing is OUR choice. I respect their freedom to make their own choices & it's not my place to tell them how wrong I think it is. Why can't you non-religious respect OUR choice also?

The majority of people in this country, even this world, eventually saw how wrong major discrimination was decades ago. Either some people never learned that, or decided to just not practice it, or discrimination is again becoming a very serious issue. I'm not sure which answer is the correct one.

I'm not too concerned about having to make good on that bet. I'll check back here in 30 days & I can guarentee that I'll be able to list at least 5 out of 10 people who have currently posted hatred, who will have done it again by that time.

l am a cancer survivor, now going 40 years. Faith is something many do not understand. Remember, God works in mysterious ways and every creature is created by Him. l am glad to see there are a lot more people who are supportive than those who are negative. We must always remember that afflictions are caused by ourselves, not God. When we destroy part of the earth everyday, we increase the afflictions on ourselves. One day we will have no earth to live on because we have done all that we can to destroy it for profit.

Even the whale understands that. l feel sorry for the people who done that... God forgive them for they do not know what they do.

well i think the story is somewhat happy for i think nelson was victorious in her cause of raising awareness on breast cancer and she helped raise bucks for organizations. What's more, she had befriended a rare organism in S. CA, and that made it cuter and more inspiring.^^

ringadingdingdong & sweetpea, perhaps if you weren't so negative, you would have clicked on Nelson's link and discovered that she and Larry have now received over $23,000 in online donations. This "cute" story made others aware of her friend who has cancer and what she was doing to raise money for breast cancer awareness. Having cancer doesn't mean you can't also have joy, in your life. As Nelson said "it's a God thing" and apparently God knew exactly how to help her raise more money for her cause so enjoy the story instead of being so petty.

The fact that Nelson's friend has cancer at this point can't be changed. But the awareness of the problem and money to support it can be and that is what this was meant to do as well as show the amazing God that we serve and His love for each and everyone of us!! I was so excited to hear that there had been another $23,000 raised and I am sure that is just the begining. If there was more people like Jodi Nelson the world would be a much better place!! I agree with you texastwin. The hard thing for other people is to think that they can do better than other people or try to be defensive with their negative impressions. At least Nelson have done something, is doing something for other people. For those who have negative comments on this story, go on, do something for a cause, for other people, for your love ones. Go to the amazon river and do a backstroke with the piranhas watching over you.... you might be able to raise a few dollars, it might be helpful to your sick neighbor...if you don't have a sick neighbor, then turn around to the next block, their might be a hungry neighbor.....if you can not do , then Nelson is still much better than you....

I can't believe that anyone would find anything negative about this story. It's all good. Small miracles happen around us everyday if our minds are open to see them. The guy who made the "BTW" point as to the reason the minke whales are not seen in the California area makes my point for me. The water is not cold enough..... that day someone prayed for divine intervention and received it. End of story. It's particularly interesting that this event occurred during the beginning of the celebration of Christian Holy week. Something to think about......

Reply by johanna crowe April 2, 2010 09:55am PDTReport Abuse

One more thing... ponder this one... who says God manifests himself in human or Earthly life forms? Wouldn't God merely allow any of his creatures or Mankind to act in a less than Earthly fashion for the sake of gaining some positive energy when divine intervention does occur? After all a miracle only requires blind faith, an open mind and a willing heart. Sounds easy.... rarely is. If you don't think so, just read the negativity launched on this website over an event that is strictly a positive story. Humans have become so skeptical they are ruining all positive forces around them without a second thought. Open you eyes folks! There are a lot of remarkable and often unexplainable things happening out there. THINK about it. Then follow this woman's path and make a difference anywhere you can. Little things can become big things. That's the miracle of it!

For everyone calling this a miracle, here is something to ponder. Why would god choose to manifest himself as a whale in miracle form? Wouldn't it be more productive of him and his time to cure the cancer that is crippling this lady's friend? God did not create man in his image, man created god in his. This occurrence is nothing more or less than a neat coincidence. Whales and dolphins have been known to swim alongside boats, ships, and other vessels from time to time. If one were to be swimming alongside a Somalian pirate ship, should it therefore be viewed as an act of the devil? Get real people! It is inspiring that she was trying to raise money for cancer research because that money will be used by SCIENCE to come up with a cure. Why the need for miracles? If there were an omniscient all knowing god as some of you are suggesting, wouldn't he have realized that Eve was destined to eat the apple? Seems strange that someone who allegedly knows and sees everything couldn't see that coming. By the way, I am fully prepared to be called "someone who claims to know everything, but knows nothing at all" after posting something like this. I will admit that I do not know much at all, but through this ignorance I hope to live a life full of scientific discovery and enlightenment. The type of foolhardiness found in this miracle talk is akin to living a life of contentment and prolonged ignorance, with not potential for the growth of mankind! Science is the answer, not religion. Just my two cents worth.

@ the casual skeptic - Science is the answer? Oh yes, because we all see how far it has gotten us in the cure for Cancer. I don't believe anyone suggested that the miracle in this was God manifesting himself into the whale. Those who don't have faith don't have the ability to see miracles so it doesn't surprise me one bit that you don't see it in this story. Those who see through the eyes of science only contribute things to 'coincidences' those of us that see through our faith see them as 'miracles'.

Not to mention the fact that a miracle only made to benefit the woman with cancer wouldn't be seen by so many people. If the cancer was cured; the doctors and her immune system would get the credit; not God.

here is the simplest answer a can give you "skeptic" God works in mysterious ways. He does not simply answer any prayer directly but works in different ways to help people. He may not have given you what YOU wanted to see which is his hand coming down from heaven and reaching out to the breast cancer patient and curing her since thats what usually takes for skeptics like you to believe but he gave something called "inspiration" Jodie Nelson in her last 2 miles of her journey. Stop being so stuck up and whiny just cause you think God hasn't worked for you and just admire what has happened. Its people like you who ruin a perfectly good story like this.

Reply by the casual believer April 1, 2010 08:34pm PDTReport Abuse

But why wouldn't he manifest a miracle in a whale. What if it's not about living a cancerless life? what if it's about living a strong, persistent life? What if it doesn't really matter how we die but only matters how we get there? Maybe God wasn't trying to say look how powerful I am, maybe he was just saying look how strong a life you could live. You say we create God in our image, but isn't that what you're doing? using your human pragmatism to see it would be more productive to simply heal the woman. You're boxing God into the limitation of your concept of his will. Maybe he was supporting her cause and what she was saying to thousands around the world and not trying to prove his omnipotence. a miracle is an example of God's divine intervention in a humanly act, not just a display of his power or the most productive thing. If all it takes for Him to reach thousands more via Yahoo's homepage is having a whale swim next to this woman on her quest, why wouldn't he. He doesn't want to spoon feed faith to us. he wants us to look at every situation and find him in it. Interesting insight though. I'd certainly rather challenge it than accept it at face value.

Everybody needs to take a deep breath and chill. I don't know how you can correct someone's biblical correctness and then call them a 'dumb ass.' He voiced his opinion and then asked for your thoughts not your animosity. put your gun down in read his comment again with the thought that maybe you could learn something about your own faith.

God did tell Eve to NOT eat the apple,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, why do you think women never listen to us men?
it started from the beginning.

Reply by scientific paranormal April 1, 2010 08:45pm PDTReport Abuse

I still believe that, for one, there is more to the world than what we see. Most fail to understand that sometimes, we just can't explain why things happen.

To believe only purely in science isn't very reliable. When there are times when science is no longer reliable, there is the time to pray, or to wish, and to hope, and hope this is a miracle, soon. And hopefully, and sometimes, by some sort of chance, you're saved. One thing's for sure. Believe in science, but that doesn't mean it always saves you.

...Sorry. I kinda believe in karma, witnessing it, myself. It's not like doing good ever did any bad to me, or bad doing any good (unselfishly). Naturally.

Don't you think it's a little bit amazing that the whale did follow her? Maybe it's not a miracle, but, it's a reward, perhaps. And she had fun. That, at almost every single step of life, is more important. A happy life is a longer life. Even scientifically. Stress = high blood pressure. When you're happy, you look forward to more, and do more. Don't get me wrong. Science has been one of our most reliable...things...in forever. In fact, happiness is science...but more than medicine gets people through life, know what I mean?

And, note...maybe there's no miracle. Maybe, it's April Fools!! Is this a joke? Lol. If they really took pictures, I wanted to see the whale shooting water and making bubbles, but I don't see. Oh, well. I'm not sure.

Who decided to turn this great uplifting story into a religious debate....?

Oh, @casualskeptic... free agency gives you full entitlement to whatever you choose to believe and I respect that. However, I feel your burden must be heavy when the very utterance of the belief in a miracle by someone you don't even know, reveals such a bitterness within you. Why bring everyone down who reads these comments, and instigate yet another negative source of contention on the internet using a story that is so uniquely uplifting? Lighten up already. By the way, great job on filling your argument with several well placed "big" words like "allegedly", "akin", and "foolhardiness". I don't think I've heard that last one since the 1950's. I am glad you know how to use a Thesaurus, but I believe you have more pressing personal issues you may need to work on for yourself before you try to catapult the fury of your inner turmoil onto a public format. Basically, just be nice. Maybe you'll see some miracles if you try it for awhile...

I think the casual skeptic got stuck in biology 101. If he would have done his homework, doctors, psychologists and behavioralists are now looking at conscioussness in animals as a real thing. Casual skeptic makes such charges because it is far easier to ignore truth. What better way to kill animals as the superior being, when in fact whales have been around for 65 million years. He bores me.
I know what I know. I have done research and located many scientosts sayng these creatures, among others DO have a consciooussness. Isn't that how slave trade started? We always consider ourselves more superior. Well, the planet and the universe are bigger than the both of us and man is only beginning to understand it.
I think casual needs to go back to school.

I am one of the awful heathen non-believers. I know I know, I should find God.... But I'm not here to degrade anyone's faith. I actually think it's awsome that people have faith, that they can believe in something that big. I don't however and I make no apologies for it. I just want to say that in the book Genesis God asks "Have you eaten fruit from the tree from which I forbade you to eat? That means that, yes, He did tell them not to the apple. So first off, lets not bash each other ok? Second, please just know the fact before you slam someone.

JMG3, you words are true about respective realities. But what is true for you is true for you and no one else. No I do not support casual skeptics ideals. I march by a different drummer. I can say this, what if you were born with an ability, which not only let you talk to animals but hear them? Some would call you crazy. Many of us talk to our pets daily. I hear them. I have heard the whales sing. Why? I cannot say. But I do and have. I have written a book about this, not to become famous but to raise awareness. One half the profits of the book goes to animal rights and animal protection. Too many people who know me and have seen this for it not to be true. I step over the line to do this, amongst ridicule by such as casualskeptic. But we each have our realities. ANd we each have our reasons.

Dolphins have saved human beings at sea. Why? But the truth, any truth has to be experienced by that person to believe in whatever he believes. So I don't have any desire to change his mind or yours. What I have chosen is to believe what I know and do what I can to help those, who we think cannot speak.

Conscioussness is our justification for our superiority. Man has done this with his own race. He does it with the animal world and his environ. It lessens the harm that he takes on others and it gives him a false sense of power. We are intelligent, but so intelligent we can kill ourselves and others. It's time we think again.

I do not stand by and be casual. I am not an onlooker. But there are all parts to the game of life - doers, sitters, shakers and critics. It is the world we have created.

So be thankful for the experience and the documentation. A person with a noble cause was given even more notoriety by 'a silly whale'. Or was it?

Reply by mornai April 1, 2010 10:27pm PDTReport Abuse

I know people out there don't believe god, and i also know people out there who do. Whatever you believe, it's your decision in life to believe it. I do believe in God, however i don't expect miracles. I like to think of it as this: god isn't helping us, so we can more self sufficient. If god just fixed every little problem we had, we'd probably become lazy and never do anything ourselves, and whenever a problem arose we'd just ask god to fix it for us. Having to do everything ourselves makes us more sufficient, supplies more survivability, and overall makes us feel good about ourselves with the fact that we don't need anyone to hold our hand throughout our lives. And that, is why i think god doesn't just cure cancer for everybody, or any other major issues we humans are having right now. It may or not be true, but that is what i believe. (god also may or not exist, but there is no proof he doesn't exist, and my theory above counters what little proof of that existed.)

As for the story, i'm glad there are people in the world that embark on things such as this for a good cause. I realize breast cancer is a serious issue for women everywhere, and i wish i could contribute more to the effort for finding a cure.

Reply by jesus whale April 1, 2010 10:47pm PDTReport Abuse

Hmmmmm,, If I had lots of free time, I sure would not be lazy, but if I became lazy I would blame god, if i was full of energy & life & excitement i would blame the devil.

It does not matter if a person attributes this whale to coincidence, luck, religion, whatever. It will hopefully bring more attention to raising money for breast cancer research. If a person follows a religion or is spiritual, they are likely to attribute it to a deity etc. If they are not they will say it is coincidence.

If you over-heard a guy telling someone he had a lucky dead cockroach in his pocket that his dad gave to him and he was sure that it was the reason he had won the lottery, would you really stop and take the time to write him a proper thesis about why he is wrong?

If you really thought a person was truly ignorant or crazy would you even bother? Or are you trying to bolster your confidence that you are right. If it doesn’t matter to you, why are you wasting your time?

Why do you care what reason they have to be happy about a whale swimming with a lady. Who asked you to relieve anyone of their religious beliefs? Are your two cents supposed to make them feel better about the state of our planet or the people on it? lol. At least they have a reason to believe things might get better. For most of us skeptics the only thing left is death by severe climate change, asteroids, disease or who knows what.

Is this your way of saving people who read this page from a lifetime of... something? Or do you just post your little bits of uplifting enlightenment everywhere?

If people believe that we crawled from the ocean, great. If people believe we were first large primates, great. If people believe that we were dropped off by aliens... mmmkay. If people believe we came from the dust of the earth, whoaa hold on a second. We can come from microscopic bits of whatever, usually water, but dust? no way… right? lol. Because that is what the God of Christians says. Formed from the dust of the earth. In fact there are quite a few religions that say man came from the dust.

Stranger things have happened. Much stranger things.

Yay whale.

When someone prays to God and it was manifested through the Whale(or anything)..it just verifies that God is with us and gives us hope and to believe in God more and more because he will get us through anything as long as we believe. The more we believe, our lives will be filled with more happiness.

This discussion is turning into a good debate. Funny, because the paddler herself, Nelson, took Larry as the answer to her prayer. Thereby taking the whale as a miracle. Did it occur to you? That God must have perceived that those celebrities with money would be unable to help? And since God supports this good cause, sent Larry to capture the attention of the world so that to encourage those able to help out too? I wonder though, if God perceived it too, that people who have no means to help and is uncapable of doing anything to help would rather pick up this story and start questioning His omnipotence? Sad.

But I believe, that unless you believe in miracles, you would never be able to experience miracles in your life.

@a casual skeptic tho I respect your beliefs..I do have to say that Scientists used to say.."Of course I don't believe in God, I am a scientist." But now as we learn and discover more and more, a lot of scientists now say "Of course I believe in God, I am a scientist." Basically as we delve deeper and deeper into such areas as quantum physics, atoms, mind & body, astronomy, etc..we find that science is supporting that there is indeed a 'intelligent force at work, and so much we simply can not explain nor understand . Even Albert Einstein knew of this 'intelligent creative energy', tho he could not explain it's origin..so if you love science, (which I personally love too) pay attention and you will see that science is just beginning to "prove" (for lack of a better word) the very existence of God or divine intelligence at work. Also most of the greatest minds in history knew that there really is no such thing as coincidence. I chose to believe in something greater then just myself..I chose to marvel at life's mysteries and yes even miracles sometimes. Then again to me, just waking up in the morning alive is in it's self a miracle.

For the skeptics, could it be you failed to read the story?
"We prayed at 4 that morning that God would reveal his beauty and creation and nature, and allow me to endure this long trek, so for me it's not such a huge surprise that this happened.
Minke whales are not commonly seen off Southern California, and those spotted by boaters are often elusive. So when a mammal Nelson named Larry joined her endeavor to become the first woman to make this long paddle, she took it as a sign.
Alisa Schulman-Janiger, an American Cetacean Society whale researcher, said minke whales can be friendly but added: "This type of quality encounter is highly unusual."
czekitout...was your whale a Minke whale? Or do you even know?

This is a response to casual skeptic... I am a religious person however I agree the whale that followed Jodie is not an act of God at all. If anything I feel we all should be thankful she wasn't attacked but that is beside the point I wanted to make. You sound like you are searching for an understanding of God. And just a guess in the dark but maybe life has been a bit uneven for you or maybe its just the world we live in today that makes you irritated and confused about faith in God? But that doesn't matter either I wanted to tell you God has no affect on what happens today or yesterday or tomorrow on any one human or the entire race itself. Not sure if you have read the Bible however God did know what Eve would do and does know what you will do in any given situation, the catch is you have the right to choose what you want to do. And basically it all comes down to Satan protesting against God that with that right you will choose not to follow God. The world we live in today is like a big game of chess between God and his angels and Satan and his demons (which are just angels that have fallen from Heaven and chose to "ride" with Satan). And unfortunately we are all the pawns but the point is to make the right move. And just because man says science is their proof that God doesn't exist proves absolutely nothing. Science if anything ironically brings us closer to God. Just because you understand how something works or was created doesn't mean it wasn't originally put in place by a divine hand. You should look at science like a rare glimpse into understanding the complex power of your creator and how he works... However you see our science has its limitations but thats just because in the end we are all merely a creation ourselves and not the creators. Just something to think about... Hope you have a good day

It is called faith for a reason, and i will tell you it is the most incredible feeling to believe. I do believe it is the work of God. You ask and you shall receive. geniusbfresh i appreciate you taking the time to justify your belief but it doesn't seem right to me to take someone else's logic for good.My human logic is what gave you medicine and the technology to have this debate on the internet. What if the ancient greeks never questioned their beliefs in Zeus?In conclusion, skepticism is crucial to the development of a society. If no one questions their beliefs or the beliefs of others, society stagnates. However if you have proof that those children dieing of cancer are going to a better place,i would be happy to accept that their is a god.Until then, please don't call me confused.

I have read many responses to what the whale was or was God really manifested in the whale.

The reality of this story no matter how many directions you look at or analyze it that it raised awareness of not only for Jodie's friend condition but for all that have or had cancer.

Many people are alive because of such acts of awareness such as this story. I believe before anyone starts making this into a religious debate or questioning someone's motives that they need to not forget what her efforts were about, cancer that is plaguing many nations including this great nation that has almost the top health care system available.

Reply by osaka April 2, 2010 11:23am PDTReport Abuse

texastwin827, I wouldn't say the photos are fabricated. I would say that they were taken at a different time to create a story that didn't happen.

She told the entire story on her facebook page without one mention of the whale. Why? The article is focused on the whale and there is no indication in the article that Nelson wanted to keep it quiet for spiritual reasons or any other. The whale is noted as the "miracle" that may help her reach the financial goal that she had originally set out to accomplish. There is every reason to believe that she wants to share this part of the story with the world.

But whatever... maybe it is true, maybe it is not. God this... God that...

I just don't like being lied to. Especially if it is going to involve religion. I support her courage. I support the cause. I'm glad to hear that she is over half way to that 100k. And if it is a hoax, it's a pretty good one; unnecessary perhaps. There is a great story either way.

Ok, so i am sitting here reading all of these "Oh I believe in Science" posts. Good for Ya'll. I do too, but I believe in science and medicine in a different way. See I believe that God gave us the gift of knowledge, or just enough to figure out science and make medicine. Medicine really only stops the symptoms, then your body uses the techniques and adaptations that GOD gave it when he made us to cure whats wrong. NO God does sit on his throne and go "hmm...you are getting cancer..." Most of the time that is brought on by choices we make. And Christians also believe in Satan. Nobody has brought that up...one of you were asking what about tornadoes... Ok I also believe Satan sends tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. to try and break the Christians faith. That's what he does... As far as God manifesting himself in a whale would make plenty of sense, as a whale would represent a strong being, or a family being, as most people know that a pod of whales will travel together nearly all of their life. So now my question is if people think that God doesn't exist, and Christians are stupid, WHY SIT THERE AND BASH US??? If you think our cause is that stupid, why argue with us... most of us do NOT argue with atheists or agnostics. Usually I for one ignore them when they bash me, unless they want a real conversation, then I will talk to them about it. If there is absolutely no truth in Christianity why fight so hard to disprove it? This story was amazing by the way, I honestly think it could be a Miracle, as usually whales will somewhat avoid prolonged human contact...as any wild animal would. That was amazing in and of itself.

Also, Osaka, IF this is a private moment for her, perhaps you should consider that she didn't write the article and she has one brief comment about the whale, probably as a result of the question asked by the author. If you don't chose to believe her, fine, but please quit harping on something that there is no basis for you to do so. Here you would be considered a "Negative Nelly"...those are people who always find a negative, no matter how many positives there are about an action or story. That's really sad that you feel the need to do so

Reply by workingbrain April 2, 2010 01:38pm PDTReport Abuse

ravin please don't pretend to understand biology, you have no idea how the human body works.I'm not trying to smear you or your religion, but as you have the right to say that god is real and this is clearly an act of god,i also have the right to say that no god exists and this is no proof of god or related to one.By the way,i would like to know what a new born baby has done to bring cancer upon himself...i'm really curious to hear your answer. You also said satan is the one that sends tornadoes. If so,can god stop him?If he cant he is not all-powerful,witch by the way is a self contradictory term-can god create something that not even he can destroy?-if he can stop him but doesn't,he doesn't care about you.If you read the bible,i certainly don't need to remind you that god sent the most destructive plagues and disasters(great flood, fire from the sky, locusts, killed all first born babies,etc.).
About your remark that there is no need to counter your claims, its because too many people are scared to say anything that religious people like you say :you don't have the right to "bash" our god.Guess what...just like you have the right to say that Buddha,Allah,or Zeus are not gods, atheist like me have the right to say the same about your god and any other god.

For working brain..... you asked me if I think a tornado is an act of God.... I will have to say yes. He creates all kinds of things, even if they seem bad or not right. In the event of a tornado He is there to protect you and guide you through that hard time and He WILL make sure all works out in the end. Some times bad things need to happen. We may not understand it, but how else can we grow as human beings? Is it really fair to accept only the good from Him and not the bad? Is it fair to expect everything to go as WE want them too and have a perfect life? That is what Heaven is for. That is what I strive for. And even though I have full faith in Him I also know that there is also one big bad guy out there also running interference in our daily lives trying to remove our faith in Him.

You ask what a new born baby has done to deserve cancer. I'm sorry but I dont believe it quite works that way although I can't begin to give a reason for it..... it is not my place to do that. But like I said, there is good and there is bad in our lives..... it is up to us how we grow from EACH and EVERY experience we face.

Have you read the book of Job? It is my favorite. Because of all that he endured, I will never lose my faith again. I once saw the world from your same perspective and I can assure you that I was NEVER as happy and at peace as I am now that I am a TRUE believer. I do not need an obvious sign to believe anymore (NOT saying that is what you need OR want,,,, i was just saying) to have my faith.

I want to also make sure you know, i am not in any way bashing you or your thoughts. I believe we all have a right to think and feel in a certain way. I don't want you to think I was attacking you.
:o)

@ Workingbrain, I did NOT say anything about other gods, nor will I. And as for "Not pretending to know how the human body works", I am not pretending. If you ACTUALLY read the post, I enjoy science. Biology, Chemistry, Physics. I know many things in the science field. Thank you very much. God DID flood the world, send the plagues, it was to get the attention of his people. If you have read the bible you know also that many of His people were lost for quite a long time, BECAUSE they stopped following him. They made statues of golden calves and worshiped them, which God told them beforehand that that wasn't going to work. God sent the plagues to the Pharaoh to say hey...pay attention dude... you are straying from my path. Not a good idea man...and then i bet you are going to bring up Job, who lost EVERYTHING, but did NOT loose faith in God, then what happened? God gave him EVERYTHING back, and then some. I am not bashing Atheism, I am not bashing Buddhism, I am not bashing Hinduism, I am not bashing the Satanists or the Lucifarians, and no I do NOT agree with them. Ask a Buddhist about their god and their book, see what they know. Read the Koran (I know its not spelled like that but it gets the point across), their book states, and i quote, "We believe everything Jesus said, Everything Moses said, but we are not Christians." Their book talks about peace and love, then the last book of the Koran, also called the Koran, is nothing but hey guys lets blow ourselves up and kill non-believers, we will get 72 virgins afterwords. The Hindus have so many gods they don't know which one does what. The Christians are probably the ONLY group that can tell you what God expects of us, who he sent to save our hides, AND the message of the Bible is the same all the way through.

Reply by ravin April 2, 2010 04:26pm PDTReport Abuse

Also on the whole you don't have the right to bash my God, you do, its not smart but you do. And I just asked if we are wrong why argue with us. Usually when people like you bash my God, I just ignore what you are saying. Then there are times where I get this feeling deep down that something needs to be said, which is what these posts I have made are about. In a normal situation, I would have ignored you and been on my way, but I felt something needed to be said. To the babies with cancer, THAT is Satan attacking family, not an uncommon tactic. Yes God can stop Satan, and He does it in His own way. OK your house was destroyed by a tornado, where was God during all of it? Keeping you alive. He may not stop the tornado, but simply keeping you alive, then look at all of the people who end up helping. Donating money, reconstruction, people that volunteer to hand out food and water to the disaster victims...look at Haiti... Look at how MANY people went to help. That is what I would call a blessing sir. And like I said you have every right to bash any god you choose, but if you are right and everyone is wrong, why argue with everyone? Why try to discredit everyone and everything they believe? And it may not be you, but there are MANY people in your "religion" that do.

ravin and jen,i'm sorry i couldn't post a reply earlier.
ravin, you made this claim:"Medicine really only stops the symptoms, then your body uses the techniques and adaptations that GOD gave it when he made us to cure whats wrong."Pray tell what in your body has the cure for HIV,cancer or even smallpox?Do you know how many children died before the discovery of a vaccine?
http://dermatology.about.com/cs/smallpox/a/smallpoxhx.htm ->history of smallpox, maybe you should read it."I know many things in the science field. Thank you very much.".By your outlandish claim i don't think you know anything about science. And if your convinced that god gave you everything you need to cure yourself i challenge you stay at home the next time you get ill.About the other gods, you don't need to say anything,by the simple fact that you accept christianity, you deny the existence of other gods. You claim that god flooded the earth to get the attention of his people. So if i kill someone because i want to get their attention,i'm a murderer,if god does it its perfectly fine. Why?Because hes the one who has all the power.Essentially your saying that god is a tyrant and an attention whore,no more than Paris Hilton who at least we know exists. Then you say why accept god only for the good parts? So god is not good hes actually neutral? Why should i love someone who doesn't love me back?If god is capable of immoral acts then why praise him like a flawless being? You also mention Haiti and say that gods job is not stopping the earthquake but keeping you alive. Can you say that to the thousands of parent whose kids died in Haiti? Also no doctor ever found "satan" in a cancerous cell.As a conclusion i would like to clarify that atheism is not a religion, its the denial of all religions. At the risk of sounding as an ass i'll tell you that i don't know what your reasons for believing are but to me blind faith is not enough.

There are some who will see the sun rise, and think yup the sun is up..Then there are others who see the sun rise, and think wow what a miracle to be given yet another day..guess it all depends on how you want to look at it..And as far as cancer goes..mankind created cancer with all our pollution, chemicals, additives, its a wonder any of us live at all..as for death, it is sad and tragic for those left behind to grieve and say goodbye to our loved ones..but if there truly is a 'heaven' or divine blissful consciousness, then I guess death is really no big deal to God to him your just coming home..just thinking out loud here..

Reply by workingbrain April 3, 2010 10:12pm PDTReport Abuse

daisyjane i'm truly happy that you see life that way,and i do feel blessed to be alive, even if i don't thank any god for it.I enjoy life probably as much as you do.And you bring a good point on the cancer issue, but my guess is that you don't believe in evolution. If you don't,you have no reason to fear cancer, but if you do,you probably know that many forms of cancer are hereditary,so even you eat food grown in your backyard you run a high risk of already having the genes. And if you say that to god our life on earth is not important...why put us here in the first place?
I really wish religious people would change their opinion about atheist. We don't hate life,we just...don't believe what is not yet proven.I'm not saying there is no god,i'm saying the time to believe something is when its been proven to be true.
Tnx :)

@ osaka, inconsistances are very good reasons to bring up how a story could not be true. Do not be afraid to raise questions. I think more individuals are stuck on this story because God was mentioned rather than looking to see if it could be an April Fool's joke or if part of the story was hype. To raise money for a great cause is wonderful. But to make sure everything is legit is even better. Good for you for raising questions. Don't be bullied.

(( @ ravin , April 2, 2010 04:15pm PDT ))
shame on you ravin .. why you’re lying ??
there is only one Quran .... NOT first AND LAST !!!
where did you get that ??
and the quote you bring .. ITS IS NOT Quran as well
Quran ( or KORAN as you like to say ) is only ONE BOOK , never changed since more than 1400 years , not even one single letter , and it’s the same among Muslims all over the world since the beginning up to the judgment day . cz God promises ( this time ) to preserve this book from any manipulation (+ its mentioned like this in Quran itself as a challenge, and never broken … )
Muslims do believe in all messengers of GOD , and their faith .. since it’s the same faith since ever, and comes from the same source … the mighty creator … the only one God
differences you see now between religions is a true proof that people faith have been manipulated, and that the existing religion at that time had been wrenched , so God send the messengers at a row ... otherwise .. one is enough!
Countries never sends troops for other parts of the world JUST for follow ups ! , they send them to force changes … so as God works in terms of prophets
Jews .. for example .. don’t believe in Jesus .. not as a son of god (as now on Christians think ) , and not even as messenger of god …. Otherwise they’ve should followed him …. are they right ??
what if your Boss sends you a message ? sure you will read it very carefully ! .... what if YOUR God sends u a message ... wouldn’t you at least take a good look instead of being skeptical “ is it really from God ???) ????? ... God of Muslims is the same God of Christians and he’s the same God of Jews .... in fact .. he's the same God of ADAM ... the first human creature and prophet on earth
please don’t be so naive to believe those who tells you that ( God of Muslims is Satan )!!! … they are misleading you , they are Satan followers themselves … please don’t think I mean Jesus ( peace be upon him ) ! , No of course

And to whom think this discussion is out of Nelson’s cause , and story .. I say … your very much mistaken .

sillytraveler thank you, that means allot to me!And i agree with you 100%...you have to question everything even if most people think its an act of god.

angeltom you are right to defend what you believe in but no one takes what ravin said as "fact".Don't worry about ignorant people, they will die out eventually and the new generation will be wiser. That being said,i don't like what you stand for at all.I'd like to know why you believe the quran is the word of god and what happens in a muslim country if you decide to renounce your faith. As you probably already figured out i already know the answer, but i want you to say it.In the end i'd like to mention that sillytraveler nailed it again....this whole story has become a tool for religious propaganda. No one is interested in the actual facts anymore, instead they like reading about the greatness of god.I hope you don't think i'm only talking about your religion.I respect both muslims and christians but i cannot agree with outdated "moral" teachings.
Wish you the best.

@ workingbrain
Well done workingbrain ,Thx for this calm reasonable discussion, here please find my answers to your questions for me
I admire your posts here, sure u have the right to question thgs until reach the truth, its not a judging , but to figure out who is workingbrain , I have to read what have he said.
As a Muslim, Renouncing Islam is a bad Idea in real Islamic rule … in fact .. very bad , you might be killed … I know that … yet , if yr a well educated Muslim and decided to renounce … this is like renouncing your mind,, who says becoming a Muslim is to become free of rules ?
Quoting from ur posts “I'm not saying there is no god,i'm saying the time to believe something is when its been proven to be true. “
Allow me ,please to say you're materialism , you need to test thgs and run them under lab experiment to judge and bring out proven results , yet , you may think I disagree “ as a Muslim “ your tough criteria of testing religion,,,, on the contrary , I encourage such a Brain to do it to ISLAM faith , PUT Quran over your experimental pinch , do your utmost scientific , materialistic tests, then, your common sense , and scientific background will tell you the proof
A high-tech car can tell you there is a sophisticated manufacturer behind it , but yet, for some reason, you cannot recognize him.
sure you will never say the car was found by itself because of some evolutionary causes !,
what if this manufacturer is watching you while you’re abusing this car, but hidden off your sight, he sends the user manual of the car many times , each time that was neglected and/or or wrenched by some lousy auto-repair shop owners for their short term interest, then … finally he sends you and all end users the full version of the user & maintenance manual, but this time, promising this version is the last , and by using his own mysterious power , it will be maintained never wrenched by any other power ,,, as an end user , you may become skeptical ,

>>>>
who dares to pass such a challenge ?? and because auto-repair shops as well, telling different things about your car and you’re sick about it, for that , he included some hidden, sophisticated, manufacturing secrets details in this manual, proofing his claim that he is the only one manufacturer of this car, which is by the way nobody else claims the intellectual property for,,, …the richness of this manual may lead you directly to believe …. Otherwise, your shortage in science cant reveal it, in time . after a vast technological advancement in SCIENCE & experiments .. you discover some of these hidden details , exactly as & where he said it is, 1400 years ago, wouldn’t this be a big surprise to you? Will this be enough proof for you that this manual is a genuine one from THE real manufacturer?
Would’nt you follow his whole package of instructions & directions this time in using this car for a long lasting trouble free drive reaching the only last safe destination ?
This is science , lab experiments, material thg talk .. and never outdated moral teaching
This is how a long list of high intellectual scientists, professors & Doctors become Muslims
And ,answering your question, This is how I believe Quran is the word of the creator … GOD
You can Just do like what I did when I wanted to know some about you … I read your posts first , then I find out a little about who you are ,,,, I’m very much like you … I need knowledge before figuring out something /someone , but once I reached the SOLID TRUE proof .. I say it .. loud and clear, even if I have to be killed if decided to renounce it someday later
By the way … in this now on world , no one will support you materially if you become Muslim , the only gain you will win … IS THE ONLY STAND ALONE TRUTH , and its worth it if it was your quest
That was my answers to you ,,,, yet .. I’m nearby .. ;)

Maybe this is a sign from the animals of the sea. They have a bigger cancer than any human can ever have. The animals die everyday & humans multiply. We have been polluting the sea for a 1,000 years. The story the other day with only 350 whales left. All humans need to worry about the oceans, when our cancer kills all the animals in the sea, then humans are next, no matter how many fund raisers you have. Yes, its great she helps her friend that is sick, but it wont matter when there are only 2 whales left & it will happen because people care more about themself than the helpless creatures of our oceans. 90% of all rivers are polluted & no one can drink the water. Look what washes up on beaches all over the world. We are this tiny little speck of a planet, we think we have a right to be here. All the animals were here before us, but we have gotten rid of some of them already & more will cease to be.
If that whale could talk, it would have told her, please help my family & friends of the ocean, we are being killed by a slow death & we need your help more than humans. We were fine before humans came, you are suppose to be smarter than us, we do not have the tools to cure the ocean cancer.

Reply by three60dunks April 1, 2010 07:01pm PDTReport Abuse

Dude, all animals went through the same evolutionary process we did. It's not like all the animals we know today were here for a long time and then we just magically appeared and started massacring them. It's called survival of the fittest.

And for the record, humans die every day too...

350 whales left? Are you talking bout a specific species like right whales? Or that there are only a total of 350 whales altogether left in the worlds oceans? This is a truly inspiring story and for such a good cause. It is great to see people still care and are willing to do what they can for each other all while giving credit to God. Thank you, Jodie, and thank you larry, the minke whale!

I really believe in what you wrote. It is a shame as well as disgusting how we rape the oceans. What a shame that there are not many more years to come that can hold such beautiful moments for even my children. Wake up folks, this place is not ours!!!! Jodie has a passion for ocean pollution as well!!! She sent her "Mean Green" SUP board on an adventure to the Mississippi to raise awareness of water polution...what happens up stream effects our oceans. Stand Up Paddling as a sport with bring more awareness to the issue of water pollution and because the sport can be done in every body of water imaginable it will make so many more people aware of what washes into our rivers, lakes & oceans

Just another quick social commentary here... For everyone calling for the heads of humans on this blog, I would like to ask one simple question. What are YOU doing to make this world a better place? Do you walk to and from your home to work? Do you live a fully self-sustaining and frugal life? Chances are, you have a car, buy food from a store, eat meat, and do very little to actually help the environment. By the way, this is not a bad thing. It's the 21st Century! Driving a Prius is not going to "save the world" from anything. Being a vegetarian is not going to save the world either. 99.999% of all fruits and vegetables are the result of genetic modifications. What is done cannot be undone. These plants are just as "dangerous" as anything else you people are always pontificating on about! This world IS our world. It seems so strange to me that in the same blog there are religious people-- who by definition argue that god created this planet for man-- making a contradictory argument by stating the exact opposite. I am all for living a cleaner and more sustainable life, but I am in the small minority that believes the United States is far less responsible for it's pollution than the rest of the world. One only need look at China, India, and Russia to find the culprits in pollution. Our country is regulated to the max! It is to the point that industry is packing up shop and moving to the Chinas and Indias of the world, where they are free to operate their business without federal mandate. Al Gore won't mention this in his video because, last I checked, a Communist country like China regulates the types of media it's citizens consume. There is no money in addressing the real problem areas. By the way, I am as liberal as one can be in many areas, but I am not afraid to call a spade a spade either. Money talks and B.S. walks!

I use to live in the Chicago area and we use to go swimming in Lake Michigan and there was quite a few times that you would have to push dead fish out of your way for like 30 yards deep just to go swimming. It was gross the way that the fish looked.

Wow three60dunks, you are not the sharpest tool in the box. Please go back and reread your history. We did showup and started massacring the whales. We hunted them to almost the point of total annilation. It is the reason ther is an international ban on Whale hunting. And why Japan is currently in international court fighting the ban and being sued by Australia (as well as a few other countries). Plus there is no such thing as survival of the fittest when it comes to PDBEs. The flame retardent is one of the main things that is currently killing our whales (especailly orcas).
There is actually much we can do from our side of the ocean to help save the oceans. While it is correct that China, Russia, and India are main polluters, we are not innocent. Fertilizers we use on our lawns are one of the main reasons there is a decline in salmon. Which causes a decline in whales. Flushing medicines down the toliet is the reason that most our lakes, streams, creeks, well water, ocean shores are full pharmacutical residue. (These are two of the many, many things we do to pollute). Yes, we are regulated, but I really don't think it is a bad thing. I don't believe arsenic should be in our water. I don't think I should be breathing in ammonia. I like the fact that blue dye is no longer used to make milk look pretty. I could go on, but won't.
Simple things you can do: Take your unused medicine back to where you picked it up (walgreens, walmart, ect... They should have a secure bin to dispose of your meds. If they don't ask them why & push to have one.) Be intellegient in what you put in your garden & lawn. Remember what you dump will find its way back into your faucet. Push to make your state a PDBe free state. Join your local toxics coaltion. They are the watchdogs that found the lead in the toys. The state of Wahington has a very strong one. Like the casual skeptic wrote, "money talks." In forcing changes at home we will also force those overseas to change how they operate.

Sillytraveler, just a note on the pharmaceutical disposal you mentioned-most pharmacies, at least in my area, won't take prescription medications back to dispose of them. Instead, they recommend that you mix the pills in with coffee grounds, cat litter, etc., and dispose of them in the garbage. According to my pharmacist, this is sufficient to prevent the medication from getting into groundwater, as most landfills are lined (not sure with what, or if that is even true, but that's what they told me), and it is a deterrent to people who might otherwise pull the pills out of the trash. Hope this clears things up for those who can't return medications to the pharmacy! :)

This is a wonderful story. I just published a book internationally, called "True Tails" and it is filled with stories from the smallest creatures to the mighty whale.

What we forget is that these huge creatures DO have a consciousness. They DO hear thoughts. Nelson had a very real concern and sincere desire to do something for another. The whale heard her thoughts. How many times have we all experienced an animal picking up our thoughts? Too many to count.

The whale was there for the tv exposure? I think not. We have just forgot how big the world really is and how in tune life is with us. We have just lost tune with that tune. We need to get it back.

Jonsoeder I hate to break this to you... Animals do not have a conscious. They act on an instinctual level. Also, it is impossible to hear "thoughts" as you suggest. Thoughts do not produce sound waves. Animals that posses ears are able to hear auditory noises, but they do not process them like humans do. Humans are the only animals that are capable of language. Any introductory course in linguistics, or psychology for that matter, would have taught you this.

Wait...how do we really know animals don't have a conscious? Who said that? What came to this conclusion? We're not in an animal's brain, so...tell me.

Reply by the casual skeptic April 1, 2010 09:02pm PDTReport Abuse

It's very simple actually. Having a conscious implies the ability perform creative acts, and think freely. Many would agree that chimpanzees are some of the most "intelligent" creatures on the planet. Scientists have been able to teach these animals rudimentary signs (which are similar to American Sign Language). These chimps are able to communicate that they want food, need to go to the bathroom, and other similar things. Ask a chimp how he feels about yesterday and tomorrow, and they have no idea. The reason? Chimps, and all animals for that matter, are incapable of thinking freely and creatively. They do not have morals, and they do not have a conscious. They most certainly do not possess any of the cognition needed to possess language. Do not mistake language with the ability to communicate. Again, introductory level courses are available in biology at your local community college. Its fascinating stuff, and you just might learn something!

Animals are likely smarter than we think.

For example, Dolphins are so smart that in just 5 days they can train a human to stand on the edge of a pool and throw them fish.

"so long and thanks for all the fish."

Okay, I see. So, they can't understand what we're saying...I agree that I have problems "talking" with a dog. I do think animals are smarter than what we think, too. Many times, I never say anything, and my dogs know what I'm up to, right away. And, actually, dogs can even sense seizures, and other things like that. So,yeah. I do agree with you. Haha. Go figure. But, on the other hand, going onto the conscious thing, I'm unsure. I think it's creative how some cats can find their way our of the cage, and how ants have colonies, and my damned dog is always bossing our youngest dog in the most very well-thought ways! Well, I've always believed a lot of things are possible.

To the casual skeptic, I just want to say you should look up the story of Kelly the dolphin. While I'm not saying that animals are at the same level of humans, this dolphin had forethought and she rationalized. She learned to save her fish and catch seagulls with them, in order to "clean her pool" and earn treats. I really think that we may underestimate animals on some level.

Reply by the casual skeptic April 1, 2010 09:47pm PDTReport Abuse

Mice have been conditioned to get pellets from a feeder as well. This is classical conditioning at its finest. If you can prove and reproduce the results of an animal other than a human having the ability create and use language, you should most definitely cash that lottery ticket in! You could be a very wealthy person! Again, please do not confuse the ability to communicate with language.

Reply by science follower April 1, 2010 10:17pm PDTReport Abuse

I really hope you weren't responding to my post because mine had nothing to do with communication. It had to do with reasoning and thought of the future. And no one taught this dolphin this "trick". She worked it through on her own. I can wait for the scathing reply now even though I'm fairly certain you did not read the story.

Casual skeptic, you claim consciousness is the ability to preform creative acts, and think freely. Have you not seen the Elephants that paint incredible pictures, and have even in some cases painted self portraits? Now I am not the smartest man in the world, but would not the ability to paint a self portrait prove consciousness????? In my mind it sure as hell does! In addition you should read up on dolphins and some of the scientific studies they have done on how they comunicate. A barrier was put in the pool and a set of buttons put in each section of the pool, with a dolphin on eather side of the barrier. A button would light up then the dolphins had to push the lit button for a fish, then they lit up the button on only one side of the tank. but would not give the fish untill both dolphins pushed the correct button. With almost 100% accuracy somehow the dolphins would communicate which button the dolphin of the non lit side needed to push. How this was done is still unclear they were unable to communicate through sound or sight. I am not saying they "hear" thoughts, but it sure makes you wonder. I could go on and on about different studies that undermine almost everything you have spouted off about(when it comes to animals, I actually agree with you assertions about god), but I am already rammbling, but I will just say in closing that I hope you go educate yourself about the natural world before you go spouting off like the all seeing, all knowing douche of the internet again.

HE put that in us(ur first yet obvious fact against evolution),...............so He can fellowship with us.I bet you often wonder and say why does God let children get raped/murdered. or cancer get so many..........He did not create evil, but provided a way to Himself thru it. Well, casual skeptic, if someone is less creative does that mean they are less "conscious" than others? The Whale was playing, and play is a creative act. Pray tell, what instinct was the whale acting on that causes them to stop and play with a human? There is not one. If there where, than there would be not story. Although you do a nice job of taking away from the surfer's efforts to raise money for cancer research. So, well done.

I have seen animals possesses feelings, to act creatively and also to think freely. Just because an animal has been trained to show a certain ability does not mean that animal is unable to communicate. MAYBE they were trying to communicate with you in another way but you were too blind to see it? And you may be thinking that i am "confusing communication with language," but I'm not. Just because they cannot express language as we do, does not mean they cannot understand it.

"@ the casual skeptic - Science is the answer? Oh yes, because we all see how far it has gotten us in the cure for Cancer. I don't believe anyone suggested that the miracle in this was God manifesting himself into the whale. Those who don't have faith don't have the ability to see miracles so it doesn't surprise me one bit that you don't see it in this story. Those who see through the eyes of science only contribute things to 'coincidences' those of us that see through our faith see them as 'miracles'."

Okay Cristi--and where has religion got us? Wars? Has it cured cancer? Is it saving all those children in third world countries? Poverty, starvation? No, no, no.

If God cared so much to even manifest himself into a whale just to show support and raise MONEY, then that's a petty God. There are thousands of CHILDREN dying because of diseases! There are children with mutated faces, starving, ect. And you think God would rather help someone just raise a few thousand dollars?!

"here is the simplest answer a can give you "skeptic" God works in mysterious ways. He does not simply answer any prayer directly but works in different ways to help people. He may not have given you what YOU wanted to see which is his hand coming down from heaven and reaching out to the breast cancer patient"

Yeah, because "God works in mysterious ways" isn't even an answer. It's an excuse to not answer what can't be answered. Religious believers have to go by faith because there is no proof. You have to go by feeling. Just like when you think you're in love, and you just know it, and then it all falls apart. You go by that same feeling that is deep inside and that can always be wrong.

And what a lot of non-believers want to see is not a hand coming out of the sky, you twit. We're not retards. We're not the ones who believe Eve was made by a man's RIB BONE. We're not the ones who believes Jonah lived inside of a whale. It's fact that you can't even live inside of a whale.

@Shyy

You say that religion has done nothing, but in the mind of the believer it has given us plenty. Now, I believe that those he helps who don't believe in him often credit themselves for having overcome the crisis or think it coincidental. Religion has blessed us with faith, strength, and inspiration to pick ourselves up amidst those unfortunate conditions you listed. Science does not resolve them either but offers no incentive to get us back up when we are down. It is not whether bad things happen or not, what is important is what we do amidst the tragedy (I think this is crucial for believers as well as non-believers). For many though, religion saves you from the bitterness of sulking in the broth of tragedy and gives your life meaning once again. I call that doing plenty.

When you inferred there were other priorities for God that came before Jodie’s cause, all I could think of is why you would judge and categorize those who are suffering despite the size of their need. I think one of the ideas behind religion is that God does not categorize; he helps in different ways: physically, spiritually, through the counsel of a friend, through the benevolence of strangers. How do you know that he isn’t helping those children with facial mutations that you mentioned? Why do you place a timeline to God’s miracles? Oh, I get it… these are the times of instant gratification or nothing.

As for the argument that it's impossible for Eve to have been made from Adam’s rib bone, out of all the biblical stories this one that I’ve always believed is easiest for the scientifically inclined to comprehend. Afterall, a rib bone would still retain genetic information of the whole human being (nuclear DNA in the osteoblasts would serve as the DNA blueprint) and scientists are indeed able to clone a whole animal out of one microscopic cell, why couldn’t God create another human being from just a rib in his way? Just because we cannot understand it does not mean it's impossible.

Reply by harpo853 April 2, 2010 12:53pm PDTReport Abuse

@unravellife: Why can't "God" prioritize? You're saying that if, for example, it was a matter of choosing between saving hundreds of lives or saving one, God shouldn't have to choose the former? There's no reason why he shouldn't do that.

If God did exist and he did create Eve out of Adam's rib, then it wouldn't really be cloning, would it? I don't think that's what you were saying, but the whole point is that it wouldn't be scientifically possible for a woman to be magically created out of a man's rib. It's about as believable as believable as Aphrodite being created from a man's genitals.

Lastly, just because we cannot understand it, doesn't mean it's a miracle or that God is responsible. Could civilizations from thousands of years ago imagine what we've accomplished today without calling it a miracle? There are some things beyond our explanation that probably won't be explained until long after we've died.

Just spend some time with and animal, then tell me that he or she doesn't have a consciousness. Animal minds may be simpler than our own, relying more on instinct and less on rational thought, but they do have emotions and can communicate them effectively. As well as instinct, they do have reason, they do have creativity, and I believe that people can learn quite a bit about ourselves if we paid attention to our animal neighbors. This whale was a miracle. Whether or not God sent it, that's for you to decide, but, either way, he's helped Jodie Nelson in her attempts to raise money to cure her friend. To some, this may sound a little crazy, but maybe it was intentional. What jonsoeder said about animals hearing thoughts is, at least partially, true. Through my experience and the experience of others, I've found that dogs can pick up on the emotions of others without any physical cues. I've heard of dolphins doing the same.

Reply by sillytraveler April 3, 2010 11:32pm PDTReport Abuse

Yes, animals are far more complex than we give them credit for. To say othwise is just plain wrong. I've trained dogs, cats, horses & birds. Some were sharp & some not. But daily I was in awe at how they commincated with each other & the "language" they used to get their point across. Much of it was complex. Just because I didn't always understand what they were saying didn't mean they weren't "talking to me." anyone who has spent anytime with an intellegent mama cat knows how her voice will go in & out when "speaking" to her kittens. Different sounds, pitches, octaves. These kittens know when to run & hid, when to come & be fed, when to follow mom, which toy she wants them to play with, ect... Pretty complex. Now that I volunteer at an Aquarium, I am in more awe with how many species have "languages" of thier own. To not believe this is to be behind in the research. I would suggest reading up on just the orcas. You will be amazed at what is being observed. Most new research has been helped by the new audio equipment that has been placed in stategic spots in the Pacific Northwest. I don't have the website with me but you can down load these "Pods Casts" of the whales talking to each other. Fasinating.

What is a "God way" anyway? Are you referring to the same god that condones mass murder, rape, and incest throughout much of the Bible? If you took the time to read a bible, you would find that it is full of nastiness, contradictions, and fallacy. Living a moral life is a decision that everyone makes. I know many a atheist who are moral. Name one war fought in the name of atheism? I can give you a list of about 200 hundred that were started by Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. in the name of [insert religion here]. Before anyone starts in with, "wasn't Hitler an athiest" I recommend you hit the history books. Hitler was raised Catholic. Even if he became somewhat agnostic later in life, this proves nothing! Genocide and religion-- or lack of religion-- have little to no correlation in this context. Never once did he declare, "I am going to kill in the name of atheism" or anything of the sort. The same cannot be said for the religions mentioned above.

Dear casual skeptic, first, may I say that your name is a bit of a misnomer, as your skepticism is anything but casual. That said, these are events that make up a "God way:" 1) a woman is faced with an overwhelming, unimaginable battle - cancer. 2) her friend imagines another type of overwhelming battle, and decides to fight that battle, just in the hopes of inspiring her friend's courage. 3) She makes it a fund drive for a cause that could more directly help her friend, calling on a celebrity friend whom she expects to provide most of the money. 4) She prays "that God would reveal his beauty and creation and nature, and allow [her] to endure this long trek." 5a) In shark filled waters, she is accompanied for two hours by a whale, which as I understand it, sharks will not go near. The encounter with the whale buoys her for the rest of her journey. In one creature, her prayer is answered with "beauty, creation, nature," and "endurance." 5b) I assume, dear skeptic, that you will call 5a bunk, so for the sake of argument - a whale researcher (scientist) says this whale is not only rarely seen, but usually doesn't stay for prolonged encounters. So this rarely seen, non-social whale swam next to her for 2 hours, rolled next to her, and blew bubbles under her board, all in the view of a boat full of people and cameras. 6) The celebrity friend fails to come up with the money, but 7) thanks to all those cameras, she's got networks vying for rights to the film, which will probably yield more money than the celebrity would have given. This woman learned that when faced with an overwhelming battle, even when humans fail you, not only does God send you what you asked for, but He makes up the difference and more than you dared to imagine. That, dear skeptic, is what I call a "God way." I believe in science, skeptic, but rather than believing that a lack of scientific proof is proof that God doesn't exist, I believe it proves only that we have so muchmore to learn.

@casual believer: I didn't mean to imply that God always gives us what we ask for, but that he gives us our needs and beyond, when we ask. The woman in this article asked for what she needed, and that's what she got. However, I keep being reminded that while not always, God *will* give us what we want, but to really get what I'm after, I need to be specific in the asking. I could tell a couple of funny stories about that. I also believe that God always answers prayer, but sometimes the answer is "No."

@jesus whale: when I said "shark filled waters," I was going by the article's statement of "39.8 miles of ocean and sharks."

Reply by sillytraveler April 2, 2010 12:19am PDTReport Abuse

Actually, there are a few places where the waters are still "shark infested." Yes, we have cut numbers by the millions. Yes, we are getting dangerously close to not having any sharks at all (especially in some areas). And yes, humans should be smart enough not to eat them all. But if you read many above posts you can see that many of us humans are really not that smart. Some THINK they are smart, but that can be debated.

He does not say to anyone, "Go rape that girl," or "you look like a good candidate for a nice dose of cancer," and NEVER has He turned his back on ANY of his children even if we do not believe in him. He did not "allow" nor encourage anything bad or evil. We as humans think for ourselves. No one controls what we do, we always have choices. If we choose to cause harm to another person, He isn't going to stop us by throwing a huge lightening bolt from the sky or have a building fall on us so we cannot make those bad choices. They are our choices. We will pay for them later.
We may not EVER understand the why's and we may never see how He has helped us, but from every bad situation, we find ourselves in a better place than we were in before. He will always take care of us. Even those that lose everything imaginable, He will provide for them. Even those that die, He takes care of them (even if we don't feel like it is our time to leave this Earth).

To the casual skeptic...first of all, I never believed that the bible was meant to be taken entirely literally. Remember, the actual words of the bible were written by man, not God, during a time that was very different from today. All that "nastiness" was common during that period, so obviously that's what was going to be written about, but God never said that it was all okay. Secondly, I've never bashed your lack of religion, so why are you bashing those who do believe? I'm open to other religions, or lack thereof, and I'm not about to say that one is completely right and the others are completely wrong. I do not believe that a good and merciful God would take in his handful of good Christians and leave all the others, sinners or no, to Satan. If you are going to be so close minded as to say that all believers are idiots, then you can keep your opinions to yourself. Besides, even if it were wrong, a religion is a good thing psychologically, so long as they aren't one of those crazies who bomb everyone who doesn't believe in what they do. Religion gives hope, comfort, peace of mind, and something to strive for in life. Many religions also encourage good things like peace and charity. So, though you might think that we're idiots, at least we're moral idiots with full, happy lives.

It's called tribulation. Our time on earth is a fragment of eternity; trials and tribulations bring people closer to God. Evil is in the world because we have free will that God gave us. Read the bible and really try to understand it's teachings before you try to intellectualize…

Jordie, I suggest YOU read the Bible! Here are a few questions that you can ask god when you meet him (Lord knows I wont).
1. Why did god place the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Seems kind of cruel to tease doesn't it?
2. If Adam and Eve had two children, both males, where did the rest of the population come from? Please don't tell me that you condone incest!
3.Why all the human sacrifice in god's name? Is god that insecure?
4.Why did god take the time to create such a vast universe, with only one planet that is capable of producing life? Does he have a passion for astronomy maybe?
5. If god truly knows everything, why did he have to manufacture a flood to wipe out the entire Earth (save a handful of animals and few 600 year old prunes who made and piloted the ship). Did god know that he had to willingly kill off the entire planet, and did so anyway?
6. If the Jews are really god's "chosen people" why did he "allow the Holocaust?
7. Why does god send people to Hell if we don't worship him? Again, is he that insecure about himself!
8. Where exactly does god detail the creation of dinosaurs in the Bible anyway?
9. If god made everything, who made god? By the way, this is a plausible question, and the rest of us are anxiously waiting your reply on this!

Your move Jordie! Cheers!

Like in the book of Job, we are not capable of understanding or comprehanding the answers to all the questions of the universe...because our liitle brains can not! God does not condem you to hell for not worshiping him, he condems you for not accepting him and his son. You have to remember to Bible was "insipred" by the word of God and written by humans so it contradicts itself and is not perfect and is only a guide to living. Man was given free choice, that is why we are "allowed" to make mistakes and do stupid things and hopefully learn from them. God was not "made" by anyone, he is simply the alpha and omega..the beginning and the end...One has to have faith for the things we don't or won't understand.

Reply by the casual skeptic April 1, 2010 09:20pm PDTReport Abuse

I promise not to mock anybody! I am asking these questions out of curiousity. Sure, they are written somewhat rhetorically in order to prove a point. I find it dangerous that so many people base their lives around what is said in the Bible. There is lots of good stuff in there, but much of it is outdated and cruel. It was written by man, and is imperfect. I get that. However, it is somewhat bizarre to me that some things from the good book are to be taken literally as the word of god, while others are to be "taken with a grain of salt" as man wrote them with imperfections. Maybe man wrote some of the good stuff with imperfections too. You cannot have it both ways. What it boils down to, as I stated elsewhere in this blog, being moral is a choice that any person can make-- atheist or otherwise. I do not mean to offend, so my sincerest apologies if I have.

@the casual skeptic

1. Why do you think it was a tease? Satan persuaded Eve to take the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge.
2. The Bible doesn't tell every detail. If it did, it would be an enormous and heavy book.
3. There were no human sacrifices to God. There were human sacrifices to fake gods and idols.
4. Didn't you ever do something just because you wanted to? God probably did the same.
5. God killed the people with a flood because they were sinful. All except Noah and his relatives.
6. God didn't "allow" the Holocaust. God gave humans free will. If God did allow the Holocaust, then its most likely because the were sinful.
7. Read the 10 Commandments. God is a jealous God. Also, he created us so we're his servants.
8. This answer is the same as #2
9. Even I don't know this question and nobody will ever know the question.

You should study more of the Bible before you ask all these questions. Most of the times, the Bible will answer people's questions about Christianity.

1. I think it was a tease that he would deliberately place a tree in the garden, and then warn someone to not eat from it. That is a tease!
2. I do not want to mock, as I have promised not to...
3. I remember reading a story about all the first born being killed in a particular city as per god's mandate... Honestly, I could be wrong though. It has been a while since I was a "little casual skeptic" after all.
4. I would think that god does everything for a reason, not out of boredom.
5. Noah wasn't sinful? I always wondered how he lived to be 600 years old as well. And how did Noah gather two of every animal in the world? Did he literally cover the entire globe? Not all species are native to the region he lived.
6. I just might concede this point. Although, it seems strange that god would allow this to the people he claimed were "chosen". With friends like that, who needs enemies?
7. Why is god jealous? Is this to say he is imperfect like the rest of us? If so, his practices should be open to criticism.
8. This seems like a pretty big detail to leave out... It is interesting that fossil records do not fall within the time line that the Bible lays out.
9. I agree 100%, which is why I am skeptical.

I have read the entire Old Testiment. After completing it, I had far more questions than answers. Thank you for taking the time to answer some of my questions though. I truly respect your beliefs, I simply do not agree with them. That does not mean that I wouldn't love to sit around and drink a beer with you and have a good discussion. I find this to be better than watching TV or doing something less constructive. Maybe we can all learn something from a discussion like this. :)

You can't stop at the old testament. Jesus was the founder of modern christianity. To base your concepts of modern faith on your skepticism of just the old testament doesnt make much sense.

Actually, Casual, God killed all the firstborn himself, so it wasn't exactly human sacrifice. Wasn't especially merciful either, though. Particularly given that the ritual to signify god should passover your house and spare you child was very specific and if you missed or ignored part of it, you paid the price. Or your son did...

@ omg1tsj0e - WTF??? To say that, " If God did allow the Holocaust, then its most likely because the were sinful." Are you saying that the six million Jewish individuals killed deserved it? Wow... you are really off your rocker. Where do you go from there? Are you also saying that: the American soldiers killed in WWII also deserved it.
Are you going to take it further and state that anytime something bad happens to someone : they deserve it?
BYW - Doesn't OMG stand for, "Oh my God!" If that is true, aren't you taking God's name in vain?

I'm going to take a crack at this, casual skeptic, because your questions intrigued me. We'll see how the answers come out...

1. God gave us free will, and wants us to choose to be obedient. I don't think it was a tease, so much as a test. We failed.
2. Honestly, I don't know the answer to this one. While I don't condone incest, it was certainly widely practiced in ancient times.
3. God only asked for 2 human sacrifices that I know of. He asked a man in the OT to kill his son, but stopped him once He saw that the man intended to obey - again, a test. He asked Jesus to sacrifice Himself for our sins, but since He was "God made flesh," maybe that one doesn't count as "human" sacrifice?
4. I don't think He did. I just think we haven't found the other life out there, or have hidden the evidence of the contacts that have been made. There's a verse that basically says all creation waits for man to get a clue about God. I theorize that aliens know God better than we do and could prove His existence, but to do so would encroach on our free will to choose to believe in God. If He's proved beyond doubt, we have no choice.
5. I don't know why, but yes, He knew and did so anyway. Harsh but powerful proof that sin will not be allowed to last, IMO.
6. I don't have a good answer. Because no one close to Hitler popped him before things got to that point? Many Jews fled. Perhaps all were warned by that "still, small voice," but didn't listen? That's a terrible consequence for disobedience, but an example I dare say will never be forgotten.
7. It's what we were made for. Again, consequence for disobedience - we are given the free will to choose, but He does want us to choose Him.
8. Book of Job describes one in "leviathan." The details given sound like a brontosaurus to me. Speaking to Job, God claims leviathan as His creation, but doesn't detail the making.
9. Your question supposes that the original energy that everything came from was inanimate. Why? ;)

1. God gave us free will. He's always testing us. Why? Religion poses life as if it's a brutal game with an omnipotent being overlooking it all and doing very nothing (well of course it is all his will) to intervene. Even little babies can suffer and die...what kind of test is that?

2. I don't think the concept of humanity stemming from a single couple is a very logical argument.

3. Your talking about the story of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac....God asks him to go up on the mountain and sacrifice his son but then stops him in the nick of time. I prefer the story of Job, God and the Devil make a bet about Job. Job is a faithful man. The Devil bets Job wouldn't be so faithful if he wasn't doing so well so...God destroys his crops, kills his wife and children and makes him sick. When he maintains his faith God wins the bet and Job gets a new family and crops. Back in the day women and children were possessions that could be replaced.

4. The bible doesn't get into this or too much of anything scientific.

5. Give people free will and then kill them if they don't do as you want. Makes sense. I wonder how many children were killed in that flood. It doesn't quite coincide with Jesus and forgiveness, turn the other cheek and all that love, peace and goodwill but that was the 2nd testament....go figure.

6. I find the idea that the argument that those slaughtered during the holocaust were somehow deserving of such a fate very offensive. Another power hungry angry lunatic. The world has a long history of them.... If only there was an omnipotent being to lend a hand or come to the rescue.

7. No logic to this. Yes, send them to hell if they don't follow the rules. Of course these rules vary depending on your religion....so pretty much everyone is deserving of 'hell' according to another's religion. Me....I don't think anyone deserves to burn and suffer for eternity...

8. Nope, no dinosaurs in the bible...The planet was still flat at the time.

9. The big bang?

Just a quick note to answer some of your questions and clear up some of your misunderstandings - these are commonly known things among those who have had any scholarly look at The Bible/Christianity - so - I haven't made any special research just for you (sorry) but I thought it better to answer than be a perfectionist and not help out! :)

1. God gave us free will. He's always testing us. Why? Religion poses life as if it's a brutal game with an omnipotent being overlooking it all and doing very nothing (well of course it is all his will) to intervene. Even little babies can suffer and die...what kind of test is that?

A) Religion is an all encompassing category and therefore broad sweeping comments can easily be irrational. Sociologists (I have studied sociology on the graduate level) even say that some religions are better than others - some encourage suffering and violence while others discourage it and so on. But I'll answer for God as revealed in one 'religion' - in the Bible and Christianity. In The Bible God is not always testing us (though tests enter the story at times) - rather He created it all good but also allowed free will. Choices were made and we now live in a fallen world. But He hasn't been inactive - eternally far from it - the whole story of the Bible is the story of Him setting it aright. We are still in the middle of the story - and it isn't over yet - so that may help explain your confusion about the evil and suffering people bear... there is so much more to say but - I'll leave it at that for a while...

2. I don't think the concept of humanity stemming from a single couple is a very logical argument.
A) Ok - fair enough - but meanwhile the world evolutionist community now believes that the whole human race is descended from one woman - they call her 'Primordial Eve' - this has been arrived at by studying DNA evidence from all over the world. BTW - think about it - evolution itself, even before would have called for this, and twins.

2. A) Contd. Also evolution, before 'Primordial Eve' would not only have called for the entire world to descend from one couple - but that each part of that couple would have had to have evolve coincidentally at the same time and proximate to each other. That is a toughie... twins might answer it except that such coupling would usually result in birth defects not positive mutation or the continuation of it...

3. Your talking about the story of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac...
A) but this had nothing to do with a city or a system of sacrifice - it was meant to foreshadow God giving His Own Son. As per Job: God did not destroy Job's crops. God allowed satan to attack Job. When Job had everything restored double he got the same number of children (Why? Because his children still existed - they went on to sheol or paradise accordingly) And Job never lost his wife even though she didn't seem to be as faithful (she said, "Curse God and die.')

4. The bible doesn't get into this or too much of anything scientific. A) The Bible was not meant to be a scientific text - but BTW it often turns out to be accurate. See above example of primordial eve - Another ex. from history - for years skeptics said - the Bible couldn't be true because there was no governor of Israel named Pilate - then a few years a piece of masonry with his name and title was found - and he is now accepted as a genuine historical figure. I wonder if any retractions were made?

5. Give people free will and then kill them if they don't do as you want. Makes sense. I wonder how many children were killed in that flood. It doesn't quite coincide with Jesus and forgiveness, turn the other cheek and all that love, peace and goodwill but that was the 2nd testament....go figure.
A) Life comes from God - when people separated from God they simply did not have eternal life anymore. God is long suffering wanting all to r

Previously I was trying to reply to a reply - I think it is easier to go to the original questions:

Your questions step in and out of a world view - a better test of an argument is to understand the whole argument and test it for internal cohesiveness and correspondence with data. For instance people often 'refute' Christian claims without really knowing what they are... So in my answers I'll try to give you a better picture of what Christians believe and answer any remaining questions (if I can)

Jordie, I suggest YOU read the Bible! Here are a few questions...

1. Why did god place the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Seems kind of cruel to tease doesn't it? A) All good comes from God and God created people for relationship with Him. Relationships, as a core element, require choice and trust. The Tree (though probably actual and real) was channel for trust to be exercised.

2. If Adam and Eve had two children, both males, where did the rest of the population come from? Please don't tell me that you condone incest!
Gen 5:4 tells us that Adam had many children including daughters. For much of human history incest was condoned in various cultures and at various times. God does not prohibit it until many centuries later in the Mosaic code. At this point it was not prohibited; maybe this is because these people were better stock. But in time degeneration comes and inbreeding is prohibited. It makes sense - when there is a broad gene mixture degenerative birth defect is less likely in coupling between siblings - but the more narrow the gene mix the more likely the birth defects. Figure Adam and Eve being the source of all human genomes would have a homogeneous mix.
BTW - as some other replies mention - it seems absurd that the whole human race came from one couple! Well - yes for some reason it does - but genetic research has concluded that the whole race is descended from a 'Primordial Eve.' Evolutionists the world over now believe this.

3.Why all the human sacrifice in god's name? Is god that insecure?
A) this one is hard to dignify with a response - it reveals a lack of actual Bible knowledge. Human sacrifice is constantly condemned by God - it is the primary crime that the Old Testament prophets deliver God's judgment against. One example is Molech worship that involved sacrificing your first born so that you will be more successful in your career. They would fry a child in the hot red hands of an idol. Reminds me of people being encouraged to sacrifice their first born because it may interfere with career prep today...
You many be confused by a story where Abram is tested by God when God tells him to sacrifice his son. God stops this in time and it was a pre-figure of God giving His Own Son for the sins of the whole world.

4.Why did god take the time to create such a vast universe, with only one planet that is capable of producing life? Does he have a passion for astronomy maybe?
A) He wanted to? ~ Because He could? ~ Because there are other purposes besides carbon based life? ~ because we don't know the whole thing (Deut 29:29) ~ because carbon based life is at such a fragile balance that the galaxy is necessary to create the right conditions - and the galaxy has to 'sit' somewhere as well?

5. If god truly knows everything, why did he have to manufacture a flood to wipe out the entire Earth ... Did god know that he had to willingly kill off the entire planet, and did so anyway?
A) Your question is hard to follow.. do you mean that God should never have created in the first place if He knew He would have to destroy any life? Why should God allow evil to triumph in this way? To avoid good because bad may come?
The Bible tells us that God saw that the measure of their evil was full... every thought was evil continually - so that's it - it also tells us that He is patient wanting all to repent (2 Peter 3:9) Interesting one will condemn God for no justice then condemn Him for it...

Reply by plea for common sense April 2, 2010 11:03am PDTReport Abuse

6. If the Jews are really god's "chosen people" why did he "allow the Holocaust?
A) Rabbi's came up with the name 'holocaust' which means 'whole burnt offering' for what happened figuring that they had displeased God as a people. Christians offer a different answer... satan tries to block prophecy (as in the ex. of killing all the babies of Bethlehem or infiltrating the promised land with fallen angels and etc before Abraham's descendants came back there after their Egyptian bondage.) But God turns all things to good - even satan's plans - so the world was always against Zionism until that brief period when world sympathy went out to the Jews. They had been buying swamp land and desert from the Arab world that occupied that region for decades. With world sympathy donations came in to irrigate, cultivate and use modern farming techniques among many other things and the first act of the UN was to recognize Israel as a state after its loose confederation of kibbutzes fought off pogrom from a pan-Arab coalition to destroy them. They declared themselves a state at that point and thereby prophecies that skeptics laughed at and Christian liberals considered metaphor - finally came true (prior to this people said that there could never be an Israel state again).

Evil happens in this fallen world where we have 'free will.' When you point to evil and say where is God's intervention - be careful - He is intervening in a different way - but He will intervene in a way more like you mean - punishing and ending evil - but do you really want that to happen before you are ready? See 2nd Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Reply by plea for common sense April 2, 2010 11:07am PDTReport Abuse

7. Why does god send people to Hell if we don't worship him? Again, is he that insecure about himself!
A) Hell wasn't created for humankind. It was created for the rebellion of fallen angels. But if people insist on being God or on having a universe without God - eventually they get it - Hell. Hell in the Bible really isn't described the way it was in Medieval literature. It isn't this horrible kingdom where satan reigns and tortures everybody. It is called 'outer darkness'

All good comes from God - a place where all good ends but you continue by yourself is much more like the Bible's description of Hell - but additionally the Bible talks about the Lake of Fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels. If you give yourself over to satan - then you get to share this sentence.

8. Where exactly does god detail the creation of dinosaurs in the Bible anyway?

A) Just some random facts - which should show this argument is a straw man argument...

~ The Bible mentions to creatures that are probably dinosaurs. (Job 41:1 & 40:15)
~ We still have dinosaurs (alligators, Komodo dragons, etc)
~ Why do you think a set of extinct creatures refutes the Bible? That is a common notion that is poor logic - it is a violation of non-sequitor.

9. If god made everything, who made god? By the way, this is a plausible question, and the rest of us are anxiously waiting your reply on this!

A) You have only two choices - and either way you believe in non-causation at some point. Either you believe in a universe without cause or you believe in a creator without a cause. So this is an old rube. Every time you ask this question the deist, theist or Christian can ask, you where your non-caused universe came from. Studying the evidence (which I have only just barely scratched with my answers here) - leads me to prefer the God option.

Creation makes it obvious there is a Creator. The vast historical evidence for the resurrection leads me to feel confident which Creator.

Might I suggest some reading? There are reams and reams of evidence for the reasonable belief of Christianity, some current books that touch on some of it are:
1. Evidence that Demands A Verdict by Josh McDowell
2. More Than A Carpenter also by Josh McDowell
2. The Case for Christ by Lee Stroebel
For a more philosophic approach you can try:
1. GK Chesterton's Orthodoxy
or
2. CS Lewis's The Problem of Pain

There are many more examples but these seem like good starts.

@reality rocks & casual skeptic: (this is in a discussion tone, not anger, so please take it accordingly) I don't have all the answers. I said as much, as I attempted my answers. I tried to keep my 9 answers within one 2,000 count reply box. No Christian, no other religion, and not even science can answer all of your questions (or mine) with 100% accuracy. Even if they could, there's no guarantee that you or I would like all of the answers.

Yet, I'm often puzzled by those (and I'm not speaking of either of you, specifically, but more generally) who refuse all religions, because they are unwilling to accept that there is higher being who knows all and has a plan for their life, but they are perfectly willing to accept the word of a human scientist that this or that scientific explanation is the way things are.

The Big Bang is a theory. Evolution is a theory - and one that from his deathbed, Darwin said didn't work - that his 2 theories contradicted each other. Science has come up with some doozies of explanations that were once thought of as absolute scientific fact. Do you know that science once believed that the force of magnetism was contained in an invisible, intangible fluid that flowed through the air?

Now, I could call that "incorrect" or "nonsensical" science, and choose to disregard all science because of it, but then where would I be? I'd be living in a cave, learning to hunt and trying to figure out which plants were edible. I don't think God and science are inseparable. To the contrary, I think we should use the full force of science to try proving God's existence, or even to try disproving it. But disproving doesn't mean convincing others that you're right - it means coming up with evidence one way or the other. Personally, I can think of too many times that I have prayed to God, and found my prayers answered - at times very specifically. Some would say "coincidence," but I say that takes far more faith than believing in God. (cont.)

@reality rocks, but goes back to question from casual skeptic:
'rocks said:
6. I find the idea that the argument that those slaughtered during the holocaust were somehow deserving of such a fate very offensive...

I never said that Jews deserved the Holocaust. I said perhaps they went through it because they were disobedient. I was suggesting that God may have warned them all to flee, but some didn't listen, and so they tragically fell in the Holocaust. Many did flee, and thankfully, there were survivors from those who didn't.

It's like if someone was in a burning house, and you yelled, "Get out of the house," and they stayed. If they stay in the burning house, they're going to die. That's awful, but it's reality.

I heard a true story once, of a man about to board a plane. At the last minute, something told him not to get on the plane, so he didn't. The plane crashed, and all on it died. He said God told him not to get on the plane. Someone asked why God didn't tell everyone else not to get on the plane. The man's answer was "I think He did." Goes back to free will - we can choose to listen or not.

Also reminds me of the joke of the man in the flood. He said God would rescue him, and as the waters forced him to higher and higher ground, he refused to leave with the truck, the boat, or the helicopter. He drowned. In heaven, he asked God why He didn't rescue him. God said, "I sent you a truck, a boat and a helicopter."

Point is: I believe God always makes a way out. I believe those who went through the Holocaust had a way out at some point, but didn't take it. Sometimes the way is "drop everything and run with your life." The Holocaust was awful, but it was the result of a number of wrong actions on both sides - not stopping the madness and/or not running. No one deserved it, it was awful, and what was done to the Jews is very offensive. But it was inescapably the consequence of other's actions and/or inactions.

@larryswife: Wow, it’s sad that people can have so little faith in humankind. Maybe if people abandoned this attitude we could make more progress. Sure, there are many things we can’t answer now, in our lifetime. That doesn’t mean they won’t be answered eventually as advancements in science give future generations more and more answers. Accepting, worshiping, either way, that’s pretty ridiculous to send people to hell, who, aside from not believing in God (oh no!) are perfectly good people who respect their neighbors and do their best to lead a good and honest life. But you think by not accepting God and Jesus, they should still go to hell? Hm. Oh, God created himself, did he? Well now I believe. One has to simply ACCEPT that there are things we don’t understand. That doesn’t mean people should start calling them miracles.

To casual skeptic on question #4: God did not create a vast universe. Such a thing cannot exit. Read the Bible as it is literal truth, word for word. Read Genesis! What God created was vault that divides the waters below from the waters up. The sky is only a vault, like a ceiling, and stars are merely lights attached to it. Therefore, what NASA and astronomers have been feeding us has to be lies. There can't be a vast endless universe with billions of distant galaxies, because the Bible tells us how the the world and the heavens were truly created and structured. This is the exact same situation as with evolution, which also has to be a lie. The Bible tells us about creation, and that is the only truth there can be. However, the lies about the universe by the astronomers are far greater and more dangerous lies than the theory of evolution, and they should ban teaching such notions about the universe in schools and go back to the real sky as a vault idea.

By the way, the book of Genesis also tells us about the sons of God (see Genesis 6:1-4). Some human females during the early biblical times were really good-looking, and therefore the sons of God mated with them and had children with them. These children grew up to be the heros and giants of the old times. These were Gods grandchildren! This is very interesting, as later Jesus is said to be God's only son. What happened to these other sons? Obviously God let his other descendants, i.e. the grandchildren and their possible families (all members of his own family, of course), perish in the flood, all these heroes of the old, men of renown as the Bible calls them. But what happened to the sons of God? He must have gotten rid of them somehow as ole Jesus later was his only son. This issue also raises the question about Mrs. God. There must have been one or were these other sons also brought about by immaculate conception of some earthly females? The biblical scholars should really look into this stuff.

That is absolutely wrong. When you want to study the scriptures, you need to understand its literal context. The sons of God were considered the remaining people who were righteous with God. The sons of Seth, or Enoch. This was just before the flood and if you read more than Just verse 1-4 you will understand that God says that His spirit will no longer strive with man, which means He was referring to man. The sons of God were again the righteous while the sons of men were the decedents of Cain. It is very important to read the entire chapter rather than just a verse or two. If you want the right context, I would recommend you learn ancient Hebrew for the Old Testament so that you can better understand what it is saying. I am in no way picking a fight, just trying to help you better understand.

As for Jesus, He is God. He takes on Many names, including "THE SON" so that we may better understand the Trinity, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. If you look at John 1:1-18 it in a great way explains to us that Jesus Is GOD and of course Jesus was made flesh. If we know one primary thing about Jesus, He always spoke in parables. The reason why was so that we could better understand Him. He used, in John 15:5, I am the vine and ye are the branches. Now clearly we are not actual branches neither was He and actual tree but he used this and other parables to help us better understand Him. Just the same, He uses Father, Son and Holy Spirit and different Identities so that we may better understand or grasp who He is. In Isaiah 55:8 He says" My thought are not your thoughts..." which clearly indicates He is FAR beyond us. This is why He uses these small things such as Father Son and Holy Spirit just so that we may better wrap our minds around His description. When Moses went to Phaeroh He was simply named " I AM THAT I AM" So in conclusion God uses so many things to help us to better understand Him. I pray that you allow him to use you. God Bless.

I don't pretend to be an expert in the bible, but the way I perceive it, I don't think that most of it, particularly the Old Testament was meant to be taken literally. It was man, not God, that actually wrote the words down, and man is imperfect. Besides, the bible is thousands of years old, who's to say that some of the stories weren't twisted or forgotten. I'm not saying that one should not believe, I believe the basic ideas are true enough, just that I don't believe that it's concrete history.

Well said bridgetd. Too many people take the bible as exact word. The only way to do that is to "know" all the old tongues (some which have been lost). They forget that the bible we read now has been translated & rewritten at least 500 times. A good example is that most of us in the '60s & '70s (even now) learned on the King James Version. It is right in the name, King James Version. King James was pissed at the Pope & wrote his own version. This was then ditributed to all Englishmen & came on the boatacross with the immigrants & used widely in the US. Plus most of the bibles now used in the US is an offshot of that version. Don't take it literally. It is a guide for those that believe.
@ omg in the old testimate it basically says it is ok to have sex with you daughter. Do you believe that to be fine to follow?

God works in mysterious ways. Even though she got only 6k for her efforts. The story got even more for her, with the attention, it started money ball rolling. For all the negative comments, she is still going to get what she wished for or even more.

Praise Him...

@ FRANCIS....AMEN may His Name Be Praised...you get what you pray for . Indeed Nelson aked God for a miracle and it happened. The miracle is not only about the whale swimming alongside her but me, you and the others in this discussion couldn't be here at all. Be Blessed.

I think that whale represents God it's Creator. God used the whale to illustrate how He is always with us in our times of trouble. He wants us to know that He silently joins us in our journey through troubled waters be it the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, a dreadful disease or any kind of sorrow. We are never alone. I hope that woman with breast cancer realizes that God is sending her this message through this event. Thank you Lord!

My father's name was Larry also. He passed away when I was 18. He was the kind of person that would give a stranger the shirt off his back just to help some one out. He loved people and the ocean. Part of him is in the ocean now. Reading this story I cried in awe just thinking it was my Dad helping some one do something for a great cause. I strongly feel that deep in my heart. The most amazing thing was they named him, Larry. Maybe God sent the angel of my Dad to help Jodie through this. There are going to be some of ya'll who will think I'm insane or something but its something that truely touched my heart.

Reply by larryswife April 1, 2010 09:23pm PDTReport Abuse

Yes, "scarry Larry"loved to scuba dive and loved the water and gave the shirt off his back more that once. I'm sure it was him or the whale was inspired by your dad!

Great story! Just goes to prove that these God does work miracles in this Universe.. Whales are not here to amuse humans while being in captivity...... but given the gift to interact with us in the wild shows their intelligence and spirityality, what a great experience! You will no doubt surpass your $100,000.00 ...It is my hope you reach more like a million! Forget the Celebrity, their loss that they didn't have your humanity or compassion.

I have been out in the ocean over 100 times & will never forget this day. We were out in my boat, & 100s of Dolphins were everywhere. We stopped & started looking over the side, then a 7ft dolphin came along side the boat, as I stared into the water, it rotated on its side & look right up at me. I looked into its eye as it look right at me, that image is burned in my mind.
I have never heard anyone say any fish has swum around them for more than 5 mins, even playful seals leave. The whales in Mexico leave in 15 mins.
The animals of the sea picked that whale to be the spokeFISH for them. Jodie was chosen to be the new caretaker. Angela will be fine, it has been written. Lets see if Jodie got the real message from this impossible encounter. Two hours,,,,, this will never happen again.
Humans need to be aware of the PLASTIC ISLAND as big as Texas floating out in the ocean. Stop getting plastic water bottles, refill a metal water bottle, clubs should advertise they have filtered water instead of selling bottled water.
Jodie & Angela need to go on Oprah & talk about their encounter, all mothers of the earth need to help mother earth. This is an unheard of sign that cant be forgotten.
The story is not about GOD, its about the animals trying to get noticed & their cry for help. God has let so many animals become extinct, god does not help the animals, it is up to humans. That is why the whale has come to Jodie, for human help, not god help.

Chrisit778,,,, I am a therapist,,,, among other things, & if I told you about past lives & reincarnation, it would change your world.

Jesus Whale - That is really cool actually.. I would love to hear about your experiences with reincarnation and past lives. A lot of what I hear scares the mess out of me but I am so intrigued by all of it and have been since I witnessed my first death. Psychology/Psychiatry is a big interest of mine!! I really needed a laugh today and your use of the word 'SpokeFISH' definitely did the job.. I love it!!

Jesus Whale- I am a therapist also and your post peaked at my curiosity. I have never heard to tell of past lives and reincarnation in the practice of therapy. What kind of therapeutic framework do you use: psychodynamic, integrative, mindfulness, CBT, REBT, Family Systems, client-centered, Jungian, existential, transcendental, etc.? Are these values that you actually use in the implementation of therapy? How would a therapist handle transference and countertransference when dealing with past lives and reincarnation?

Have a Great Day!!

WE ARE TRAINED IN HOW TO HANDLE PAST LIVES. I CANT SAY ANYMORE OR SOMEONE MIGHT KNOW WHO I AM & I SHOULD NOT BE TALKING OF THESE THINGS IN HERE....

Jesus Whale- I understand but just wanted to know what school of therapeutic framework you use, that's all. Maybe, by enlightening us with that information we can in turn start to understand your perspective a little more.

I am a little concerned about her belief in a supernatural being. These gods such as Athena and Mars etc. probably do not exist and have no direct influence on what has or will happen. Sounds like a great person- but is just a little misguided or ignorant maybe. I hope luck and work ethic make her dreams come true. Education would be a possible savior?

Reply by the casual believer April 1, 2010 08:51pm PDTReport Abuse

Um... I'm not sure she was talking about Athena and Mars.

Reply by denisamom April 2, 2010 10:39am PDTReport Abuse

Also not sure why you'd be concerned. The vast majority of the human population believes in some sort of higher entity...be it God, or THE gods, or any other version. Whether you agree with them is one thing, but to "be concerned" just seems ludicrous. You must be very concerned about a great many people then LOL! Aside from that...spending time being "concerned" about those of us that believe in God just makes us happy, it means you're contemplating the existence yourself...especially since you said "probably" in your statement. I can tell you one thing, we're not concerning ourselves with those like you, you don't bother us unless your behavior is unacceptable...why should we bother or concern you? The only time your kind crosses OUR minds, is when we lovingly pray for you and hope that someday you'll come to find that there may be a higher purpose for this life on earth, and that you'll get to reap the rewards of believing with the rest of us. I mean, really, what is the risk in believing vs. the risk in not believing? If you're right and I die well then that's it...I'm just gone. No harm no foul. But if I'M right and you DON'T believe...well, I think we all know what the consequences of sin are. Think about that friend.

The problem with the Abrahamic belief systems, is that people act on belief. Many people have been murdered, tortured, kicked out of their families, to name a few things, in the name of religion. People acting in negative ways towards others is due directly to their belief.

Beliefs in the Abrahamic religions are not innocent. These religious beliefs have harmed many people for thousands of years. There is a huge risk in believing. All the people who have been harmed, murdered and alienated by religious people know this first hand.

Reply by mikewestcoast April 2, 2010 07:51pm PDTReport Abuse

Also, you say that God (thunder and lighting) is all Just. Right? Finite sin equals infinite punishment? Where's the justice?

Reply by mikewestcoast April 2, 2010 07:54pm PDTReport Abuse

You can only sin so many times in your life. If you believe in sin. Of course, it's obvious to me that sin is a man-made concept, exactly the same way religion is a man-made concept. Where is the justice for anyone going to hell, forever?

A perfect God (thunder and lighting) needs nothing. A perfect God does not need worshiped. A perfect God would not care is you believed in him or not. If you were a perfect God, and you created sin (I don't know why), wouldn't you simply forgive everyone? Why not?

Reply by bridgetd April 3, 2010 11:02am PDTReport Abuse

It is a natural part of our being to believe in a higher power. There's no reason to be concerned. Yes, I do believe in God, but am I ignorant, misguided, or uneducated? No, I don't think I am. And, even if religion was untrue, it's still beneficial to believe in something like the bible. It gives a person hope, comfort, and something good to work for in life.

In re-reading some of these posts and the article, I feel completely tricked. Good job April Fools. Not to say the event may not have happened b/c I have experienced a whale along the surfboard and boat before (many times with a boat) but to try and connect it to the Easter thing?

Well done!

WAAAAY wrong kind of whale genius. a KILLER whale killed that trainer, and a disturbed one at that. this whale doesn't even have teeth.

Reply by jesus whale April 1, 2010 11:20pm PDTReport Abuse

NOW NOW,,, God told that killer whale to kill the trainer girl. She must have done something bad so god punished her in his own way. Remember god does things in his own way.
OK you guys, lets get off this religion stuff before one of these religions sends a suicide bomber to get us.
This is about saving a life & getting healthy. I have seen cancer death & it is a slow & painful death. Smoking is just a bad way to die.
Also this is about the ocean & the animals that are over fished & over killed. I love fresh fish on the BBQ, but they are so hard to find now.
So get off the religion stuff,, its a dead horse.
I know there are priest that have ruined peoples lives by molesting them, and wackos that kill doctors because they try to help women with abortion. The religious people will still defend them, but thats not this story...............
It is up to Jodie to use this to help all the animals of the sea,,,,,,,, thats it.
Lucky this was not in Japan, the whale would not have made it 2 hours.
OK Jodie, we are behind you to brings this to the news.

Reply by melissa davis April 1, 2010 11:38pm PDTReport Abuse

This story is about inspiration. So is religion. I see the connection. The molestation and abortion comments were unnecessary and, actually, pretty sick. Sure, leave it up to those crazy religious people to defend abortionists with protests, right? Perhaps someone should rebuke you, as well.

Reply by unclened April 2, 2010 12:16am PDTReport Abuse

Religion seems to motivate and justify some pretty sick crimes against humanity and nature. I can't blame them for overreacting.

How do we go from this woman doing a very brave thing to you weirdos talking about abortion and molestation??? I don't get it. Stick with the spirit of the story instead of your sick notions and agendas...

Why get on the internet and argue god on a story about a woman trying to help raise money for breast cancer? Are you all that selfish that you have to take away from the orignal story of a woman paddling for that long to help raise awarness for cancer. Anyone who argues in Gods name should be ashamed... God or no God do you really think God likes you to over take a great and touching story to only make it into something more than what it is? If there is a God he doesn't need attention look around..... He or she has the whole world lol.

But kudos to this lady for doing this and very cool that the whale swam with her. I am in So Cal. and when I went fishing last weekend I saw a couple of these whales out and about. But anyway to all the people that took away from the help this story was suppose to be in the first place I hope you or your family member needs help from a agency for cancer one day and I hope you or they get help maybe then you wont try to be a "internet tough guy".
