Cheating scandal at U.S. Open rocks bass-fishing community

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

A professional angler found to have stuffed lead sinkers down the throats of fish he submitted for weigh-ins during a prestigious bass-fishing tournament has been banned for life from that and other competitions in a scandal that has rocked the tight-knit and passionate bass-fishing community.

Mike Hart, a successful Southern California pro whose career earnings total more than $200,000, was accused of cheating in this manner during the recent $100,000 U.S. Open held at sprawling Lake Mead on the Nevada-Arizona border. An official with the Western Outdoor News bass tour said Hart confessed after he was caught virtually red-handed.

WON Bass will not pursue criminal charges against Hart, but the episode has tournament organizers around the country speaking out against cheating and seeking ways to prevent their events from being similarly tarnished.

"On the one hand it was a day of infamy for organized bass fishing in America," said Harvey Naslund, director of the WON circuit. "But on the other hand it was a major victory for all who have long cared for, and taken steps to protect the integrity of bass-fishing tournaments."

Catching a cheat is difficult because tournaments are catch-and-release, so bass are kept in aerated wells on the boats and weighed live at the end of each fishing day, then released.

However, sometimes bass die after being caught and Hart had offered three dead fish during the weigh-in on the second-to-last day of the U.S. Open. They were filleted so the meat could be delivered to a charity, and found to contain weights.

Officials waited until the final day to confront Hart, who turned in a full limit of five bass. All five were found to contain lead sinkers.

In all, nine sinkers were removed from bass turned in by Hart. Naslund said each sinker was torpedo-shaped and weighed two ounces. Each was attached to a short line and tied to a small treble hook, presumably to catch in the throat and hopefully keep the weights from entering the belly and being detected if the bass were cut open.

WON Bass determined that Hart acted alone, even though he had a lower-tier "Triple-A" fishing partner aboard his boat during each of the three days of the U.S. Open.

Naslund explained that the Triple-A partner fishes from the back of the boat while the pro stands at the bow, driving and steering with a foot-powered trolling motor.

On the third day of fishing, Naslund said, Hart was said to have asked his partner -- who had flown in from South Korea -- to change places while he rigged some tackle and checked on the fish in the live-well.

"The same scenario existed on Day 1 and Day 2 of the U.S. Open," Naslund said.

The South Korean angler, who would have shared part of whatever purse Hart had been entitled to after the third and final day, was given a refund for his entry fee.

For what it's worth, the U.S. Open was won by Arizona pro Clifford Pirch, with a total weight of 31.44 pounds. He earned $40,000, plus a new bass boat.

So many creeps trying to make a buck. I would give anything to be able to fish in a bass tournament for a new boat, or even 200,000 I love fishing. I've caught some real big bass but never for a tournament. These cheaters are what ruins a fun sport for everyone.

Outrageous ! Geez, I've heard some people put sand in metal cans when they weigh them in for aluminum recycling, and of course that causes real heck with the machines that are expecting pure aluminum. Literally sand in the gears.

Hope he gets all the public ridicule he deserves AND gets fined for it as he undoubtedly did it before this one event.

Can anyone tell me if any professional bass fishing tournaments use metal detectors to scan each bass that is submitted for weigh in? This would be a simple way to prevent this type of cheating. With this technology readily available, at relatively low cost, it seems ridiculous that fish actually have to be filleted to catch this type of cheating.

I do not believe they scan with metal detectors, but I believe they all have to take a lie detector test after they win, but you can beat a lie detector by taking a valium

People are mad because they don't like cheaters. Your dad got caught, now he (and his family) have to live with it.

Now maybe your dad will have more time to spend with you so that he can teach you to write and spell properly

Cheating in a contest where there is 100G's at stake is criminal, the guys daughter would take up for him even if he was a father raping bank robber, but that could be construed as an insult to father raping bank robbers.
It is better for someone like you to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt

many people are far too sensitive when it comes to mistreatment of animals. when a dog rips the face off a small child and eats it you don't charge it with human cruelty do you? no, most people would simply shoot it. there are, however, sociopaths who actually believe that we are different from animals because of our laws, ability to read, or the fact that we have opposable thumbs. corey thomas brings up an interesting point, regarless of the possibility that he was just joking. what if, in the future we find that all plants have a neural net that operates on the order of quadrillionths of a watt? this would open the possibility that plants genuinely feel pain and have sensory understanding of their environment. should we then be arrested for cruelty to plants for mowing the lawn, simply because another being has suffered? wake up people, and realize that we as humans are animals as well, and many of the instances of actual animal cruelty are in fact far less brutal and painful than acts which happen in nature. oh wait, this whole planet is nature, so what any animal decides to do, regardless of education or orientation of manual digits, is in fact nature as well.

Animals don't have competitions to see how many other animals they can prey upon, so I don't think the whole "it happens in the animal kingdom" argument flies in this case. I have no problems with this tournament, catch and release is admirable- catching fish for food is a good thing, too! But I think he was going against both of those practices and intentionally harming these fish, his (used to be) livelihood. Even an animal knows not to crap where it eats!

I don't necessarily disagree with some of your points, carltonfunkbass, and I agree a bit more w/ jupiter (the whole "competitions in the animal kingdom" angle). It's true that we are part of nature, and that animals can be cruel / barbaric in their effort to survive. I don't, however, think that only sociopaths can lay claim to the hope that we're better than that.

Listen...for a long, LONG time we had no other choice. I get that. Though we're not really design to drink any other creature's milk than our human mothers, it's perfectly natural for us to digest meat. It's not until very recently that we've been able to cultivate enough other types of healthy foods that satisfy our needs for protein, calcium, etc, to make life truly sustainable without using animals. But now we *CAN*.

Your whole argument seems to be that since brutality and agony are part of the natural order of wild animals, we should just give in and BE brutal, and CAUSE agony. But we don't have to do that anymore. Persisting in that is a result of habit, not really knowing how many other options there are out there, and / or sheer mullishness and complete lack of empathy.

Re: your plant argument...you're right. I don't know where us skinny, sickly vegans will be if we ever find out that broccoli can feel pain. All I know is that right now, right here, if you blowtorch a head of broccoli it just burns up. Do the same thing to any animal and it'll scream (if it's capable of screaming) and try to get away. I could sit here and wonder if the broccoli is maybe feeling something that I just can't perceive. But I can easily see that it's excruciating for the animal. So how can you not have sympathy for the animal?

i'm not saying that we should just give in and be violent, i'm saying that if an animal, human or otherwise wishes to attack or harm another animal it's not the end of the world. it is irrelevant to me whether we as a species possess the ability to be passive and kind, or that some other group of animals (vegans) believe that we shouldn't eat meat. i will no more tolerate someone infringing upon my right to eat meat than i will someone discriminating against me for my religious beliefs. many animal activists and vegans equate violence with less intelligent animals, and non-violence with more advanced species, but this is in my opinion a blatant misconception, along with the perception that non-violent species are 'better'. you yourself are in fact propagating this falsity. indeed, one would have to be a sociopath to see humans as not being part of the animal kingdom or as fundamentally superior beings.

Instead he was going to let the tournament directors release the fish to starve to death, he should be charged with Wanton Waste on every fish he was caught with. I read a study that proved that plants DO feel pain, the experiment was a scientist hooked up the equivalent of a lie detector to a small Oak Tree that measured the electrical impulses that travel through the tree. He would call in his assistant by name and every time he did the assistant would tear off leaves, or burn a few leaves off the tree with a butane torch, or cut into the body of the tree, this went on for 6 months, after week 2 every single time the name was called out the impulses would jump in anticipation. I forgot to mention they would also spike each time the tree was injured/damaged.
So for all the vegetarians out there who refuse to eat animal protein I hope that you know that the plants you eat DO feel pain, and it has been shown that plants can and do communicate. When there is a forest fire trees that are still far enough away that there is no temperature change will begin to produce more sap under the bark and will draw more moisture from the ground in an attempt to fortify the tree against the coming fire.
Also, I wonder about those vegans that refuse to eat meat and fish but will eat eggs, and will wear leather shoes and belts.

Carlton, I seriously hope you weren't talking about my post. If so how bout you look into your local game laws. Every State in the union has some sort of "Wanton Waste" law. And if anybody is accusing me of being a vegan, google my name then tell me I am a vegan...LOL

i understand that it is a valid statute because i myself hunt and have an intimate knowledge of my state's laws, but nine fish hardly constitutes 'wanton waste' and besides that, the fish weren't wasted. the article explicitly said that the fish "were filleted so the meat could be delivered to a charity".

also, to a point above, vegans have been playing out the guilt trip on meat eaters since there were vegans. why is it that people who choose not to eat meat themselves feel that they must push their beliefs onto others like a religion? our defensive stance on the issue is caused by smugness and the perception that omnivores are somehow inferior to vegans. the fact that in order to become a vegan one must sacrifice proper nutrition and the enjoyment of eating meat is not an attractive idea to most right-thinking individuals. we as a species evolved because of the nature of our diet over the course of millions of years. similarly, wolves and rabbits evolved in their way because of the niche their species have found in nature. the actions of vegans the world over are tantamount to convincing a wolf that his ways are wrong, and that he should only eat salad and take supplements to fill the gaps in nutrition no longer provided by their intended diet, because it's mean to kill an intelligent being and eat it. with the exception of those unfortunate enough to have a medical condition requiring such a dietary change, nature has no place for vegans, nor society for their oppressive tactics.

well, i agree that the guy cheating to win an bass tournament by stuffing weights inside the fish. the guy banned for life, should be fined by the fishing assocation also.
I remember many years ago when my brother won an fishing tournament at quasti lake in rancho cucamonga, ca. they were 2 awesome size trout. as I was cleaning one out, i heard 2 clunks hit the sink and it turned out that he put 2 2 lb lead weights inside the one trout.
needless to say, they did give him the win.
if Mike Brady wrote in on the guy who cheated, maybe this person should look in the mirror as I have a brother named Mike Brady.

Please !! Check your spelling, your emphasizing your own stupidity, by biengs and usaul , it's beings and usual. You're also showing your ignorance by saying it's not the end of the world, because this type of moral decay IS going to be the end of life as we know it. Because it's this lack of morals and values that have let our society be so permissive about the cheating in all aspects of life. In case you haven't thought about it, these pros are being looked up to by many kids who love fishing. What do you think this teaches them?

dolphinfan72: Please !! Check your grammar. If you must criticize someone for their bad spelling, get it right yourself. You're (not "your") emphasizing your own stupidity and ignorance by not using the proper grammar. I bet you go home every night and rub one out while watching old Columbo re-runs. You probably want to be a referee or an umpire, just so you can point out everyone's mistakes. And leave Ash444 alone. I agree with her 100% in her rant against everyone beating up on her father. He deserves a second chance, and it was obviously just a bad mistake that he made by putting the sinkers in the fish's gullets. He should not be hounded by all you guys out there, because it was simply a bad error in judgment. Besides, Ash444 sounds like she really loves her father and beating up on him is obviously making her very angry.

Ash4444 (as the son of) I'm sure you benefited from the $200,000 that was "won". Cheating for money is the same as stealing in my eyes. With is being such a large sum, I am VERY surprised they didn't charge criminal felony. And I will be a so-called "hater". Be cause there is no room in the world for a thief. There are people who rob banks, kill others and cheat. Yes, it is in the same category due to the LARGE sum of money! I'm sure he knows he did wrong. The first day he knew he was doing something wrong. But that didn't stop the 2nd day or 3rd. So you tell me, why he continued to do wrong. I know you love your dad. I love my father also. In my eyes, I could not see him doing anything wrong more then once. But if such a thing happened MORE then one time... There is a problem. So are you here defending him? Or defending what you wanted him to be? As for this reporter not telling the truth, It is illegal for any reporter to lie about something. Its called defamation of character and it is illegal. If you truly believe that is what this reporter is doing, I'd suggest getting a lawyer. Not "yelling" at everyone here who has gotten information and is upset. That is a lot of money and it is hard to prove he didn't do it before with the purse so high. People are going to be angry and upset. Defending him is defending his money. Money I'm sure he spent for the family and personal reasons. He did do this, and you have to face up that dear ole dad isn't the same man you thought he was. As for my father, I would have slapped him silly for doing something so stupid and indecent as stealing!

Moonie quit being a jerk, leave the kid alone, unless you can prove in court that he cheated in other tournaments you can't prove that he won any money that was not perfectly legal. If the winner of this tournament got $40,000 and the $200,000 is his caereer earnings, I can't imagine that he started out his career cheating from day one so you are off at least on your assumption that he cheated to win $200,000. he has been banned from the so called sport, so it should be done and over with get over it.

how would you like to have your life and everything you have done wrong drug out on the internet, and don't even claim to have been perfect, because the statement about slapping your old man around proves that to be wrong. If you don't have any more respect for him than to make an idiotic statement like that than you should work on cleaning your house before you give others crap.

Ash do yourself a favor and quite reading the crap idiots post on here. You know your dad they don't sure what he did was wrong but what he needs is your support. You won't be able to give it to him if you keep reading this garbage, because all it will do is keep you in a constant state of anger. Realize that most of these people are just looking for someone to lash out at to make them selves feel better. In reality their opinions mean nothing.

My neighbor competes in some amateur walleye events and has told stories of guys who catch some big walleye prior to the event and put them in a soft fence pen and retrieve them the day of the event. It's so sad that fishing has so many cheaters. Glad that this guy got caught and banned for life.

Honey, you're dad is a cheater. He disrespected the sport & violated it's moral codes. Do you really expect people to be happy w/ what he's done? It's certainly true that we've all made mistakes & should always be given the chance to attone for them & make our peace, but the world is a poor enough place these days for morals & integrity & people are sick & tired of seeing things like this in the news every day. Your dad may be a good man, but he deserves the ire & ridicule he is getting right now for what he's done. He's done wrong & should very well suffer the consequences. Wrong is wrong & there's no way to twist the words to make it right. When people do things like this, especially at this age in life, you have to question their character. Your father is a grown man & choose greed over integrity so what does that tell you about him? My advice to you is to outright reject what your father did & except it was wrong & make a note to yourself that this is no way to act as a person in life. Should you stop loving him, no, but it would certainly be smart to learn from his mistake. I don't agree w/ any of the people making threats of violence or death, as that is just ignorant, but again your father made a choice, it was wrong & now he needs to pay for it & part of that is suffering the ire of his peers. Deal w/ it young lady & learn. Let your father know that you love him, but also how embarrassed & disappointed in him you are as well. What he's done is no way to be an example to his children.

Sorry you have a worthless no good for anything father but the fact is he should of had a more SEVERE punishment for these actions! I do not think it's enough to just take away his ability to further compete in another bass tournament. To bad they couldn't take legal action against him or garnish his income or property. This should have been a very VISIBLE boundary to never cross if he had any morals! Apparently, he has never had a proper conscious or morals instilled on him through out his up bringing. People are to lazy these days and do not want to put in the work to see the glory or reap the rewards, One might say it's only fishing, but what about the others in the tournament that worked endless hours to critique their abilities as a fisherman. Do not feel sorry for your father, just feel sorry for the others he cheated! You can defend him for the rest of your life and it will still not change the fact he's scum. He doesn't deserve any consultation from any one. He needs to except the fact he's a liar, cheat and shouldn't be justified in any of his actions by anyone! If I had my way, he'd be deported to some crap country with out a pot to piss in!

What about previous wins? Does he hold any records? His slate should be wiped clean as far as any and all fishing accomplishments are concerned. He has certainly earned any and all law suits headed his way for endorsement money, entry fee payments, prior winnings, etc. etc.

Very sad and very lame, but at least he wasn't fighting dogs or dealing/doing drugs or hurting more than a few fish and the reputation of Bass Fishing. In the grand scheme people have done a lot worse and he could have done a lot worse. I hope they send a message and set a template for balanced punishment. He cheated Bass Fishing so everything Bass Fishing brought his way should be taken away forever. That's justice.

No matter how many times ppl tell this Ash4444 that her father is wrong, she recites the same blind excuses over and over. Which tells us that she has been brainwashed by the same "reasoning" that allowed her father to stuff things down fishes' throats to win. No matter what these people do, they think they are entitled to continue on as usual with no negative results.

And dad showed just how much he really cares about dear devoted (blind) Ash4444 by giving her ZERO education with his winnings. She didn't just wake up this illiterate. That took a lifetime of 15 or 17 years in the making to achieve.

i don't know her at all, and i found no reason to reiterate what many people have already said. i'm not going to keep beating the dead horse that a hundred others decide to beat. i just find it ironic how people can pick this guy apart like they intimately know him, like this act (obviously not the first time he did it) defines him as a person and that this is all there is to him. don't get me wrong, i think what he did was very wrong in every sense, but i'd wager the majority of people here have done as bad or worse, and were their lives held to such scrutiny they would not appear to be the upstanding members of society they portray themselves to be.

how well do you have to know a cheater to call him a cheater? this entire thread is about this man cheating, and you feel the need to comment on the people commenting on him cheating.

agian, i say your are a close family friend, or related.

i can call someone a cheater without knowing them, but some of these people have said things about which there is no way they could have knowledge. many have assumed that because he has cheated in fishing tournaments that they have intimate knowledge of his personality and family life. i was merely pointing out that there is no way anyone can make the slightest inference of other facets of his life simply from reading a page-long article on yahoo sports. the fact that you can say that 'this entire thread is about this man cheating' only shows that you haven't read much of what people are writing. i'd say only 70% of it is actually about this man and his cheating at fishing tournaments. you're calling me out for commenting on what other people are saying, while you do the very same. also, according to the article the man is from southern california, while i am from maine. say what you will, for this is an open forum and i support free speech, but it doesn't change the fact that i've never met or heard of this guy, nor am i related to him in any way.

I'm sure this isn't the first time he's done it. With a new kind of scam or cheat people will usually get a way with it once or twice maybe even a couple more times, It's only when people get greedy do they usually get caught and I'm suspecting that is what happened here. He saw dollar signs and pushed his luck and/or skill to cheat one time too many. I work in retail so i see all kinds of ways to cheat or steal to the point where I've started thinking of new ways to do it not that I'd ever try any but you'd be surprised what people will try.

Probably not the first time he has cheated, hope he didn't quit his day job.
