Alaska angler wins epic struggle with monster halibut

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

Imagine a halibut measuring nearly eight feet long and weighing 364 pounds -- then imagine yourself trying to reel the powerful behemoth up from the abyss and and hauling it onto the deck of your small boat.

That's the story of George Levasseur and his three partners in the summer-long Valdez Halibut Derby.

Levasseur, who caught the monster fish over the weekend, has shattered the derby record by 21 pounds, holds a commanding lead in the popular competition and has stuffed his freezer with a year's supply of delectable fillets.

But it's the memory of the battle -- not the prize money or the fillets -- that will remain with him the longest.

The Pacific halibut struck a large iron fishing lure with a herring pinned to its hooks at a depth of 170 feet, far into the Gulf of Alaska. The fish ran every which way but refused to come up.

The angler, who is 58, was over-matched. He pulled the rod upward but might as well have been pulling on the sea floor. "I'm no spring chicken," Levasseur told the Anchorage Daily News. "My arms are just shaking."

It required the strength of all four anglers, using its rail as a fulcrum, to help Levasseur pump the rod upward and reel during the downward motion, to gain line.

Fortunately, derby rules allow this type of teamwork. The fishermen eventually saw the massive oblong white sphere materialize at the surface, whereupon they fell back in awe of its size.

The halibut was motionless until one of them flung a harpoon into its flesh. "The fish went berserk," Levasseur said. "It snapped that 100-pound PowerPro [line] like it was thread."

The fishing line had snapped and the harpoon was pulling free of the flesh, so a second harpoon was hurled into the fish, and a gunshot ended the struggle.

All four men wrestled first the head, then the rest of the fish onto the deck. They then heaved a collective sigh of celebration and relief. "I've done a lot of fishing and that was the most exciting moment of any fishing trip I've been on," Levasseur continued.

The group returned to an awaiting crowd and learned the weight of the fish. Though it shattered the derby record, it's not the biggest derby fish caught during area competitions. In 1996, a 376-pound halibut was caught during the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby.

Fish this large are rare, and given the nickname "barn doors." The biggest non-tournament halibut caught by an angler was more like the side of a barn. It weighed 459 pounds and the 1996 catch, made outside Dutch Harbor, Alaska, remains the International Game Fish Assn. all-tackle world record.

Lavasseur must wait until the end of the Valdez competition, on Sept. 5, to see if anyone can beat his catch and claim the $20,000 first-place prize.

That will be a tall order -- at least eight feet tall.

Diver frees entangled orca that had been crying for help

The rescue happened just a few hundred yards off Hahei Beach, New Zealand

An orca that had become entangled in a crayfish pot off a New Zealand beach cried for the help of nearby orcas, but is alive thanks to a local diver who plunged in with a knife and cut the mammal loose. Part of the event was videotaped, and the orca's cries can be heard in the footage.

The rescue, just a few hundred yards off Hahei Beach, was performed by Rhys Cochrane of a Cathredal Cove dive outfit. The rope attached to the crayfish pot had become twisted around the orca's tail..

If a fish that size didn't die with one harpoon, much less two, I would have shot it too.

you people are morons. whats better, reeling in a 370 pound fish and letting it go only to die from exhaustion or be killed by a predator due to its exhaustion, or harpooning it and shooting it in the face so that it can be brought on board to be used for human consumption (and to be honest there is no bullet wound so i think the stupid writer threw that in because like the rest of the media he's trying to get you to go OOO AHHH). do you even understand what sports fishermen and hunters for that matter contribute to conservation through license fees? more than any of you green peace tree hugging clowns thats for sure.

Why fish at all??? The only HUMANE action here is NOT to fish. Game fishing is just one of way too numerous ways for mankind to show how destructive we are to the planet and other earthlings. EARTHLINGS, people. They feel pain and try to survive without humans wreaking havoc on their part of the earth and life. Fishermen, just like hunters, feel so superior because they can outwit and overpower animals with mankind's weaponry. Green Peace pays $11.00 an hour to gather petition signatures on Melrose in West Hollywood CA and also is about 95% funded by Starbucks. What a farce! These guys have no idea what reforestation is about and the land owners that plant land where no trees have grown deserve a metal. That includes all the mill owners with land that I've known or worked with.

We have dominion over the plants and animals of the earth. Not vise versa.

Wow u people are idiots. Have u never been halibut fishing? They shoot the halibut for the peoples safety usually and when a 300+ fish is flopping around its hard to pull onto a boat. When the fish doesnt get shot that size it can flop and hit people on the boat, so instead of that happening they shoot it.

I enjoy fishing, but I'm not fond of competitions to land large fish like this. My aunt is a professional fisherwoman, and while she likes the idea of hatcheries being used to replenish supplies, she's always though that the government was bassackward with regards to their size limits and the angler's desire for large specimens as it's the larger and more mature fish that pass off the best genetics and whose absence from the ecosystem causes more damage than if 10 smaller specimens were caught for food or caught and released. The latter part being that she (like most of you have mentioned) says that the larger fish who fight for prolong periods of time usually do end up dying once released b/c of the stress and energy used during the struggle. Whereas the smaller fish can handle the strain better b/c they can't struggle as long, a keeper size can be gotten in a relatively short period of time, and you'd stil have larger fish (who aren't as susceptible to natural predation) replenishing the wild supply.

Ya, a gun is needed, believe me! You get a fish that size flopping violently all over the deck --- it would knock the men overboard & break all kinds of stuff, and you'd scarely have a chance to nicely bonk it on the head to kill it like other fish. A gun (aimed OVER THE WATER) is a good thing!!

Granted this is sport fishing, but I'd contend we do far worse things to fellow humans than shooting a fish to keep it from struggling. stormi - Actually, plenty of animals became endangered then went extinct through natural processes ages ago. Take a look at the fossil record. I am fairly certain "big manly men" did not overhunt the stegosaurus or the saber tooth tiger.

As for shooting the fish, it's far better than some of the stories I have heard where people clubbed sharks to death with bats once they were reeled in. True fishermen value the animals they take (note he filleted the fish for use, he did not throw it away); if they don't then they end up without a sport or livelyhood. Animals hunt and kill each other every day and humans are just another link on that food chain. There is a balance for nature; we just have to get it right. (Check out conservation of the American Alligator for a success story, if you need one.)

Actually, for what I am speaking about - no they are not - humans may ruin the environment and polute natural water sources, but the Earth will continue to change and evolve with or without them.

netmarcos

Then your arguments are logically inconsistent. Either we humans are a natural part of the evolutionary process, part of God's creation, or alien interlopers. To which theory do you subscribe?

BTW: the earth will continue equally with or without the halibut as well.

For those of you who are critical of killing critters for food, etc. I hope you are total vegetarians and do not wear leather.
This is not some random slaughter like commercial fishing. In fact a fish this size has a better chance of winning a rod and reel battle like this than the fisherman.

Oh and about that Bible you are thumping, you do realize that it was rewritten many, many, many times until "King James" decided he liked the story and allowed it to be published. Since you are NOT SO swift, that is why it is named after him "The King James Bible".

So, eat what you feel comfortable looking in the eye and murdering, but do not use the Bible to justify it !!!

Uh Stormi? That is the OLD Testament, KJV or not. I LIKE my bacon - squeee squee!! Now to the facts since you seem to be WOEFULLY ignorant:

The KJV was simply a translation of the EXISTING published bible into the ENGLISH Language in 1604. Martin Luther published his way before this and influenced the KJV publication as part of the Protestant Reformation. The KJV was not the first mass publication for the little people. So before you jump on others, make sure your ducks are in a row there sparky!

Luther's translation of the Bible into the language of the people (instead of Latin) made it more accessible, causing a tremendous impact on the church and on German culture. It fostered the development of a standard version of the German language, added several principles to the art of translation, and influenced the translation into English of the King James Bible

Further, I said "after many, many, many rewrites", the King James (the most widely accepted and read Bible in print) was approved for publication. I would be more than happy to post the ENTIRE fairytail and farce that is the christian answer for anything they are too dumb to explain, but I did not feel this was the forum !!

Ah again you show your ignorance child. Yes I saw you for what you may THINK you are, however, unlike you I do not feel your burning need to crucify christianity or other faiths. We all believe in basically the same tenents of faith. You, with your attitude, show the world what TRUE Wiccan are NOT - self-absorbed, ignorant, and completely hateful. I suggest you take a journey within next full moon and find out what you truly believe.

Ah young one, you keep trying to be what you yell you are. Your hatred is amazing and extremely sad. I have many christians who are close friends who think I am the same as them in my beliefs. As well does my adopted father, one of the strongest christians I know, who is happy that I am happy with what I hold to be true and have inherited, even though I am not his child. Just because we have a few variances in beliefs, does not mean that in the founding ones we are not alike (3x rule, 3 aspects, living/doing your best in all things). My question for you is, since I have struck a nerve, what experience has left you SO full of hatred? One could argue, based on your comments through out this thread, that you are no better than those who think theirs is the ONLY way and the rest of us are 'damned'. Think about that, and get back to me.

GP - Keep guessing and BTW, why are you hiding behind the 13 year old age limit on your profile or are you 13, if not --- then Grow a pair and stop being a pretender in EVERY facet of your life !!

AND - that CHRISTIAN adopted father comment sort of blew your "I was raised by generations of pagans" out of the water - OOPS.

One more thing, at least learn the appropriate Wiccan greetings if you are going to keep up this facade: "Merry Meet", "Blessed Be", and "Love and Light"

Oh and I don't think everyone is "damned" because I do not believe in ANY of that fairytale BS - I believe in what my ancestors taught me and what I have learned through life experience - something a 13 year knows nothing of !!!!!!!

I am vegetarian, I have watched those videos. And no I grew up on a farm. Things change in the world and wouldn't it be nice if there was no suffering caused by humanity? We are the biggest plague on this earth, we cause all of the current environmental problems, and we are over fishing our oceans or either polluting them. Take a moment and think about how you, yes you, could make a difference.

bwiley

Reply by bwiley August 11, 2010 05:16pm PDTReport Abuse

Honestly, I have been actively moving toward making fish the only animal based protein I eat. Not because of suffering, but because it is healthier for me to eat. Predators exist throughout all of nature. Suffering is a matter of perspective. I believe most US based fishery, poultry farms, beef operations, etc., do the best they can do to provide our food and do it humanely. If a fisherman catches and slaughters a fish which will provide him food for days or months, he has done the most humane thing possible for other fish short of becoming a vegetarian. I have no desire to be a vegetarian. Animal based proteins are good for our bodies, not the fat, but the proteins.

EARTHLINGS, people. They feel pain and try to survive without humans wreaking havoc on their part of the earth and life. What a shame. Only female halibut get that big. One that size would lay thousands upon thousands of eggs. Real sportsmen practice catch and release. Don't give me that doing it for food nonsense. A fish that old is going to taste tough and rubbery. Always catch and release and keep the fisheries well stocked for our children and our childrens' children.

You're a real Moran! In most fish species the female gets the biggest. Catch and release is unreal all the time. A halibut is meant to be enjoyed. That's what God put them here for. But maybe you wouldn't appreciate that because you probably don't believe in God.

jimmyjoeii

Reply by jimmyjoeii August 11, 2010 06:22pm PDTReport Abuse

Norman-- did you seriously call me a 'Moran". You sir are a MORON. If you want to enjoy a Halibut eat the "chickens" -- the great tasting 20 to 30 pound ones. Don't harvest one that has been in the ocean for 30 years and is replenishing the fishery with thousands upon thousands of fry each year. Generally, older fish have more mercury in their systems than younger fish. I would start slinging insults at you like cookies at a bake sale, but what good does it do to argue with a MORON. Arguing with a Moron would only make me a Moron. So god bless you and as the saying go god watches over fools and drunks. I know for a fact you are the former but I don't know about the latter.

The point you make of eating the smaller ones does make sense. However I will defend the guy that caught the fish in that greedy or not, $20,000 is nothing to sneeze at. All of you stupid hippies who know nothing about fishing need to STFU! READ CAREFULLY: 1-THE FISH IS ALREADY CAUGHT! (hence the harpoon in it) 2- THEY ONLY SHOOT IT TO PUT IT DOWN BEFORE DRAGGING A HUGE THRASHING ANIMAL INTO A BOAT WITH THEM WHERE IT COULD HURT OR KILL SOMEONE. 3- THIS IS NOTHING NEW. IT'S COMMON PRACTICE TO SHOOT HALIBUT AND SHARKS BEFORE BRINGING THEM ON BOARD. COMMON WITH COMMERCIAL FISHING AS WELL AS SPORT FISHING, SO IF YOU HAVE EVER EATEN HALIBUT SHUT UP. Would you rather they bring it in while it's still alive and risk being injured or killed, and then beat the fish over the head with a club? That's the other option! One shot to the head ends the suffering quickly a safely (don't even try to argue and say the bullet could richochet off the water, you're an idiot) then the beast can be dragged into the boat with no risk to boat or crew.

Oh, and for both of you - sorry about your tinydick complex - it does make men irrational when they have to use just the slightest bit of their index finger and thumb to be able to use the bathroom - so sorry - really !!

You can sit down, none of the real men will make fun of you - SERIOUSLY, they won't, that's a woman's job !!
