Angler's 405-pound yellowfin tuna is heaviest on record

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

There was spirited celebration on the San Diego waterfront Monday morning after the vessel Vagabond returned from a long-range fishing trip into Mexican waters and offloaded the heaviest yellowfin tuna ever caught by an angler.

The behemoth, landed by Mike Livingston of Sunland, Calif., weighed 405.2 pounds; it's girth was 61 inches and it measured nearly 86 inches from nose to tail.

The catch, made on 100-pound-test line after nearly a three-hour fight, will be submitted to the International Game Fish Assn. for approval as an all-tackle world record. Capt. Mike Lackey said IGFA rules were followed so the catch likely will replace the current record, a 388-pound 12-ounce specimen, which has stood since 1977.

"When the scale hit that number it was like the Super Bowl here," said Livingston, 63, a retired school administrator, in reference to cheers from a crowd of nearly 200, gathered to witness the weigh-in.

[Photo:Man catches goldfish the size of a large dog]

The Vagabond, an 80-foot deluxe sportfisher, had been on a 10-day expedition in search of "super cows," or tuna weighing 300 pounds or more. Livingston's catch was made last Tuesday west of Magdalena Bay on the southern Baja California peninsula.

Lackey had estimated the tuna's weight at 390 pounds, using a tape-measure formula that is not always accurate. He then froze the fish to preserve it until the boat returned to its home port at Point Loma Sportfishing.

Livingston, whose previous large tuna weighed 100 pounds, said he developed a rash while "worrying about how big this fish was going to be."

He was so exhausted after the marathon battle that he quit fishing for the day and caught only one small tuna the remainder of the trip. Vagabond anglers caught eight tuna weighing 200-plus pounds, including two that topped 300 pounds.

The large crowd was due, in part, to reports that spread since last Tuesday via social media outlets. But also because breaking Curt Wiesenhutter's 33-year-old world record -- set on the Royal Polaris at Mexico's now-closed Revillagigedo Islands -- had been the primary objective of San Diego's long-range fleet of deluxe sportfishers.

The only known previous catch of a yellowfin heavier than Weisenhutter's was a 399-pound specimen caught in 1992 aboard the Polaris Supreme. But because more than one angler handled the rod the catch did not qualify as an IGFA record.

Livingston's fish was trucked to a taxidermist, where mounts will be made for him and the Vagabond Sportfishing office. A brief statement on the Point Loma Sportfishing website read:

"Holy Cow! The Vagabond long-range sport fisher just returned to the dock today with a historic, potential world record mega cow tuna catch. The official weight of 405.2 lbs. was met with cheers, champagne, and congratulations all around."

A beglua whale calf born Friday night at the Georgia Aquarium has died, despite receiving 24-hour nurturing from animal care experts at the Atlanta facility.

"This is an extremely sad day for the Georgia Aquarium family. Over the past few days, our veterinary and animal care teams have been giving around-the-clock care to Maris and her calf," Gregory Bossart, chief veterinary officer, said in a news release issued Wednesday. It's amazing, all these big beautiful fish and different animals in the world that are record setters and we are killing them off one by one, what a shame it is for mankind to think he has to kill or capture something to prove his self worth.

Those mounted fish are not the REAL fish that were caught. They a made of molds taken by measurements of the fish that was caught, made to specifications, then mounted. Some are catch and release. Some are eaten. Fish do not "last" in a mounted state.

Anybody think about the fact we're killing of all the good fish for sport, and soon there won't be any big fish left to mate with medium sized fish to make more big fish, and this will continue on and on until we only have tiny fish? And then no fish at all. I love sushi as much as the next person, but I know that there is WAY too much overfishing. This is merely an example out of thousands.

Reply by blando3 December 6, 2010 10:40pm PSTReport Abuse

meeeeee...this is hardly a case of over-fishing. This is a guy catching one fish. Over-fishing is the long-lining and seining that goes on all around the world for sushi eaters like you. Don't say that you LOVE sushi but hate over-fishing! If you eat sushi you are directly supporting the overfishing you're condemning. Wake up.

Raul...please define "unnecessary fishing." What about those factory boats that catch thousands upon thousands of fish at a time? Isn't that unnecessary? Yuppies eating sushi and fish tacos at their yuppy restaurants and wine bars - isn't that unnecessary? Rod and reel fishing may be unnecessary, but it's hardly the biggest problem our oceans are facing.

There are two types of people in this world, there are hunter gatherers and then there are domestic engineers. This fisherman was obviously a hunter gatherer (probably a conservative) caught this trophy fish, saw the opportunity for fame and grabbed it. Nothing wrong with that. It just cracks me up when I see people bad mouthing someone for succeeding at his passion, bad mouthing the sports fishing industry. These are little people (probably domestic engineer liberals that take what the hunter gatherer brings home and manages it) with no passion for life. You guys need to get a grip.

Hmm, it seems to me people have been killing animals for various purposes for millenia. If someone had made a protest 100 years ago for killing animals they would have been laughed at extremely however now it is a major movement. Do not forget, even Jesus ate fish. In the Bible it contains a specific list of animals that are acceptable to be used as food. God killed animals and used their skins to cloth Adam and Eve after original sin was committed. I know a lot of you do not believe in that stuff but that does not mean it did not happen. I do not believe in useless killing myself but to consume and make use of the animal is acceptable to me. I am not a hunter either. As long as the steaks are in the grocery store I see no need to go out and kill a cow or deer or whatever. But it is necessary to keep the population under control as man has driven most of the predators away and the deer population has boomed as a result of it. A comment about a previous post, I found it amusing that someone actually thought they stuffed the fish when it is sent the taxidermist.

"Killing animals for food makes some sense. Killing animals for "sport" is a barbaric insult to the entire animal kingdom." Hey Brion, how come you are so comfortable eating meat that was killed where you could not see it, cut up where you couldn't see it, and I bet cooked where you couldn't see it?
You are out of touch with the food chain, where your food comes from and why it comes from there. Why do you think eating meat you have not caught or killed yourself is any less "barbaric" than taking care of my own food? Farmers are barbaric? Ranchers are Barbaric? Brion, as the only non-barbarian, I suggest you go eat soy and thus continue on your path to enlightenment..

Sadly, it is a major movement as many people would rather eat genetically engineered food than "real" food in it's natural state. Hence all these obese people, specifically in America! Send that monster to Haiti - they are still in devastation! Everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to it...just too bad common sense isn't so common anymore. Too bad people don't wake up and really see what's going on in the world today. There are much bigger fish to fry than to go on bitching and whining about a 402 lb. tuna being caught. How about the war for christ sake. Or maybe the sad state the economy is in. The gas prices we are forced to pay, the fact that they (government) are going to start taxing groceries AGAIN. Why? I'll tell you why. It's because the media's coverage or lack there of has distorted views across the board. People know about what they see, hear or read. That's it. Dumbing down. So much is being hidden from us and some just don't care to look any further than the box on the alter in their living room. I like what is shows me, I listen to what it plays, I go buy the things it's advertising. It's all put in your brain. School doesn't stop after you get a piece of paper people. It continues on through life. Christ, get a grip and educate yourselves...

Apparently there are huge number of uninformed people in the world. SPORT fishing will NEVER lead to the demise of a fishery. COMMERCIAL fishing WILL. Granola nuts, Y'all need to get a clue and be informed before you discuss an issue. I can't be "Humane" to a fish, it's not human, I could be "Fishane" and thereby eat anything that I (as an apex predator) can catch, including smaller versions of my own species. Catch, Photo and release? Probably not on a tuna, after 3+ hour fight, would have probably died anyway. Real men are at work here, namby-pamby's need to be quiet and sit on the porch.

The fish would have died soon anyway. Fish that get that big have already passed their sexual maturity. Catching that fish saves more food for the smaller tuna. Suck it Peta, the biggest conservationists are fisherman. We are the ones giving information to the biologists. We are the ones that get taxed through fishing licenses and other expenses that go to helping conservation efforts. You go around saying you dont eat fish so you are helping the population. We give information it would take years for a single biologist to discover. Think about it....

Second off y would u even freak out about this? It's not like taking a few large tuna is going to wipe them out. abrack

Reply by abrack December 7, 2010 07:54am PSTReport Abuse

@ bentheredunthat well its very simple depending on how you look at it. I am assuming your talking about a protected species and a specific event. Its illegal to destroy certain bird eggs because there is a danger of extinction, people have hunted the bird and destroyed it environment to the point of nearly eliminating it from the planet. At this point and time there is no danger of extinction for the human as a species. The bird egg isn't coexisting inside of you it isn't feeding off your body and it defiantly isn't putting your health at risk (don't go there, there is always a risk during pregnancy). A woman that makes the choice to terminate a pregnancy is in a sense protecting herself and her ability to exist in the world. If she were to carry to term and live through the birth experience the child would then become a responsibility she may not be able to deal with mentally or financially, hence all the neglected and abused children in the world.

If you want to consider all life on earth as equal, which I assume your doing; why else would you compare a human embryo to a bird egg then we need to take a deep breath and determine can we even eat a chicken egg? What are you basing being upset about the unborn child's death upon, your fear of extinction, (no need to worry there) or is it religious based. If its religious based well then you need to step back because we don't all have the same god. Maybe yours is the right one and maybe it isn't. Maybe they will be judged maybe they wont. Either way its not up to you.

Besides there are millions of babies that have already been born that could really use someone's help why not channel your efforts into helping the ones that did make it out of the womb. Maybe If we took better care of the people that are alive and around us now abortion would be a last resort option. Maybe if people would stop treating unmarried women that get pregnant like outcast and that they have done something horrible then maybe they might no

would measure 5 feet from claw to claw, but did'nt taste very well.i've caught 80-100 pounders here on the east coast and they tasted great.

we have no idea what lies in the depths of the ocean cuz belive it or not and as much as people choose not to believe it... we dont know everything and we havent found everything their is to find... that being said we dont even have the slightest conception of what the truth is only the human conception that is wicked and evil as a cause of thousands of years of god letting us live on our own... we put a human conception on everything only for it to change years down the road... for example cocaine was a miracle drug when it first came out it cured everything from a headache to sickness "supposedly" and back then you had a sugar jar, a flour jar, and a jar for your cocaine but now and days look... cocaine is one of the worst drugs out there and is very illegal... all of you that want a sign from god proving that he does exist why do you deserve it and better yet why would you create a world to see what happens just to explain us the whole way through?? Religion is the oldest thing ever that is still around... why? because just like birds just know where to fly during the south we just know that there is a god... you explain creation otherwise.... option a) one day after thousands of years of compounds combining a human pops out of thin air and on top of that another person pops out of thin air with different body parts made for eachother (highly unlikely in my book) option b) we evolved from monkeys over thousands of years and are still evolving yet for the past thousands of years nothing has changed except our accessories and is also highly unlikely because then when did it stop and why are their not still half human half monkeys today... we were created so for all of you who dont like to admit that your not in charge and that your not the boss and that their is a power greater than your human soul... GOD help you and GOD forgive you because i know i would be pissed if someone refused to belive i did something yet thats just another one of my human conceptions

electrifiedpulse

Reply by electrifiedpulse December 14, 2010 01:24pm PSTReport Abuse

to add to my option a) humans popping out of thin air... if you did not believe this option and your a science man or woman who belives in option b) then you explain to me how monkeys came to be tht we supposedly evolved from... did they just pop out of thin air because my option a) makes it pretty clear that that is highly unlikely to happen... BUT im open to all suggestions so let me know what you think cuz as of right now id like to on behalf of all humans thank god for life and let him/her/it know that we appreciate it and we give credit to you for being our creator and we bow down to you to save us... if you cant we understand and hopefully i get to see the world that we are copied from. we understand that we dont understand your ways and that you have supreme knowledge superior to our own... You are better in EVERY way and we really appreciate it.

this argument is very narrow minded when we say a species is endangered or under pressure.
We cannot say that in all honesty we are only looking at a glass of water out of a pond by comparison. To the " Criminally Stupid comment" the it is not so the only criminal act i see here are two items in one
1 The only reason this fish is possably endangered or under pressure is due to the fact that we are over fishing them so stop buying said fish no purchase no sale no commercial fishing
2.is the fact the previous is impossible becuase our population is so massive the earth can not possibly sustatin us so the answer to this one is quite simply STOP PROCREATING SHRINK THE POPULATION AND THIS ARGUMENT WOULD NOT BE EVEN BARELY BE INTERESTING

hector von duffy

Reply by hector von duffy December 7, 2010 07:03am PSTReport Abuse

The population of yellowfin in question live in an area of international, US and Mexican waters with controlled fishing pressure. This is not the Bluefin, which lives mostly in the Atlantic and the Med and has scores of countries over fishing them for a fast buck. Yellowfin taken in US and Mexican waters is sustainabley caught. Yellowfin taken in Indonesia, Vietnam, etc, not so much, but those are separate populations of fish. Yellowfin breed fast, grow fast (10+ years is still very fast in fish terms) and you need have no guilt eating US/Mexican caught tuna, dorado, or US/Canadian caught wild salmon.

More conservation efforts are done by local fisherman than Peta. Peta complains, fisherman give factual data to biologists and work hand and hand to keep their fisheries the best they can be. That fish is also past its sexual prime. It would probably die after the next spawn.

Again, releasing that fish does not mean anything to the population. A fish that size has already spawned numerous times and is past its sexual prime. It would not produce the same amount of eggs that it used to and would probably die during or after the spawn.

Carl Watson I really do hope that your joking... first of all fishing for catfish with a telephone is moronic but also mercury is contained in fish and fish like tuna have very high concentrations of this mercury in their body that if you kill them and eat them the mercury transfers to your body and too much mercury in the body can lead to poisioning... And WE DO NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER NATURE i will give ten recent examples to prove my point... 1.katrina 2.e-quake in haiti 3. the overfishing in japan causing mass amount of jellyfish that even capsized a boat 4. e-quake in peru 5. equake right here in good ol illinois last year 6. tornadoes 7. equakes 8. tsunamis 9. volcanoes and 10 being animal attacks... I do agree with TORY MOORE a hundred percent we do not control nature nature controls us and one day we will realize this because the way we manufacture things cannot continue forever because we make it from natural minerals and gases such as petroleum (petroleum makes up everything from the makeup you wear to the gas in the car you drive) so no petroleum is not just gas and petroleum jelly although it is in both it makes up hundreds of things you use daily... this being we cant make anything without something from nature and i do mean anything there isnt one thing you could make without nature... We as humans suck balls and will probably burn for what we have done to such a beautiful place like this... I just wish people would realize this before its too late but nobody listens until it is upon them

It was made very clear what they were doing with it for those of you who didnt read the bottom section of the article join my friend from a previous post but is says clearly written that they are sending it to a taxedermist.... and for those of you who doesnt kno what a taxedermist is i will explain... think of that old woman who loves her cat so much that when it dies she just cant let it go so instead of burying it like a normal person she decides to keep the cat... now your asking how do you keep a dead cat? well thats when the taxedermist comes in ... what they do is they basically stuff the cat and put it on a stand or something similar ... so a taxedermist stuffs animals and is especially used when you catch a prized animal such as this because they will stuff it and you will always have that big ass tuna hanging from the wall in your living room or trophey collection... they also do heads such as dear ... alot of hunters who have animal heads hanging on their walls went to a taxedermist to get that done... hope this helps to let you kno that they are not feeding anybody with this animal that it will be stuffed and hung on a wall

Yellowfin tuna is NOT an endangered species. Hook and line sport-caught tuna represent a very small fraction of all tunas caught worldwide, most of which are caught commercially via purse seine operations. They are a fast-growing species with a lifespan believed to be around 6-7 years. It's also believed that the maximum size is limited by its ability to find enough food to sustain its high metabolism. The current stock of Eastern Pacific YFT is above sustainable levels.

'Charles Holder never knew when he caught the first recorded tuna on rod and reel in the late 1800s off the California coast, that he had unleashed one of the greatest fishing passions in the history of outdoor sports -- a passion for big strong fish that would drive thousands of deep-sea fishermen to spend millions of dollars with the determination of Ahab the whale hunter from the tale Moby Dick to pursue the strongest game fish alive -- simply it's called "Tuna Fishing".
As the years went by since Holder's catch, the weight of world-record bluefin Tuna crept higher and higher -- from 400 & 500 pound catches to Zane Grey's 758 pound champion in 1924, to the first 1,000+ pound tuna boated in 1970 off Nova Scotia, to current world-record catches that tip the scales at over 1,200+ and 1,300+ pounds. The bluefin has captured the hearts of great anglers like Zane Grey and Ernest Hemingway, who boated his first tuna in the Bahamas in 1935; Michael Lerner, who caught 640+ bluefins over a lifetime; and Elwood K. Harry, president of the International Game Fish Association, who has boated a lifetime total of 610+ big tuna. As many first-time tuna anglers have discovered and, remembered for weeks with aching muscles, bones, shoulders and strained backs, catching a bluefin Tuna on rod and reel requires hours of exhausting muscle-busting, back-breaking, leg-wrenching work -- not too much unlike trying to haul a small car (by hand) up a steep hill.'

Our women's & men's both landed bluefin of around 1,000 pounds. What's the big deal!

"The goliath grouper is entirely protected from harvest and is recognized as a critically endangered species by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).[1] The U.S. began protection in 1990, and the Caribbean in 1993. The species' population has been recovering since the ban; with the fish's slow growth rate, however, it will take some time for populations to return to their previous levels."

Bluefin Tuna
All populations of bluefin tuna are being caught faster than they can reproduce. Bluefin is being further depleted by ranching operations that collect small bluefin and raise them to full size to sell primarily to the sushi market.
