I realize the title may be misleading… No, he doesn’t lose an eye or something. I meant it is another wake up call to the BMX community about the dangers of riding and how it takes more than the wearing of protection to be safe. Though a helmet would have helped, the average half-cut helmet worn by riders wouldn’t save you from the facial beating and possible paralysis of an accident like this. In my opinion, more important than just wearing a helmet is riding within your boundaries and being completely aware of possible bad outcomes when you ride outside of those boundaries.
Dan got unlucky and didn’t see it coming as he was focused on the trick ahead. With no time to react (jump over the bars/to the side), he went face first and scorpioned (when your legs go over your head on a faceplant). Hoping Dan recovered from this and didn’t suffer any long term injuries. And as I said, let this be a wake up call to all riders out there… A helmet would not have guaranteed safety in this type of fall. Be smart, understand your riding level and the obstacle you’re on, and learn how to fall. Unfortunately, there’s only way to learn how to fall properly… Get the rollin’ kids!
