Jewelry store’s odd offer: Buy a $2,500 diamond, get a gun free

If ever there were incentive for a deer-hunting husband to purchase an expensive diamond for his wife, this was it.

A jewelry store in Georgia ran a promotion whereby a customer could buy a $2,500 diamond and get a free hunting rifle–and what timing. Deer hunting season opens Oct. 20 in Georgia.

“Talk about getting a bang for your bling,” a WSB-TV reporter said to begin her report about the peculiar promotion by D. Geller and Son jewelers in the Atlanta area that was also reported on by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“A lot of our customers are hunters, and it just seemed like a great thing to do,” store owner Mike Geller told WSB-TV, whose video report can be found here.

Geller told the AJC that “the first customer we had in today saw the billboard and decided to go ahead and buy that diamond ring.”

Not everyone had that reaction, however. Others saw the billboard (replicated above via D.Geller and Son’s Facebook page) and were not pleased.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the store received some complaints, as did its Facebook page:

Ann: “Is this is a joke?”

Amy: “Thanks for making Georgia the laughing stock.”

Another woman told WSB-TV: “I think it’s stupid.”

Lest you think people were going into a jewelry store and walking out with a diamond and a hunting rifle, rest assured that was not the case. Qualifying customers were given a voucher to pick up the free gun at a local gun shop.

Eddy was among those who liked the idea, sharing on Facebook: “1 stop shopping for a shotgun wedding lol.”

In case you missed this three-day promotion that ended over the weekend, don’t worry, there will be another chance.

“We’ll definitely be doing this again,” Geller told the AJC.

That’s a relief. Hate to think we missed out on an opportunity to pull the trigger on such a bizarre deal.
