A spectacular panoramic view of Mars, delivered via the Mars rover Opportunity, is being described by NASA as the “next best thing to being there.” The image was created by the piecing together of 817 separate images captured over a six-month period, according to KQED Science.
Space.com reports that the view is of a spot on Mars called “Greeley Haven,” which is where the Mars rover Opportunity spent the last Martian winter.
“The view provides rich geologic context for the detailed chemical and mineral work that the team did at Greeley Haven over the rover’s fifth Martian winter, as well as a spectacularly detailed view of the largest impact crater that we’ve driven to yet with either rover over the course of the mission,” stated Jim Bell of Arizona State University.
Bell is one of the lead scientists for Opportunity’s Pancam imaging system.
