Of all the spectacular catches Mike Trout has made, one of the most memorable for the Los Angeles Angels’ outfielder figures to be that of an enormous goliath grouper he reeled from the depths while on a recent fishing expedition off Key West, Florida.

Much of the Trout family was on hand to share the experience.

The photo at right was tweeted Monday by Trout’s girlfriend, Jessica Tara Cox, along with this description: “500-lb Goliath Grouper. I’d say it was a good day of fishing!”

The photo below was tweeted by Trout’s brother, Tyler Trout, who stated: “What an amazing day fishing! Caught a 550-pound grouper!! The thing was over five feet long!”

So like many a fishing tale, the fish grew in weight after it was caught and released.

Larry Brown Sports reported the catch Monday with this lead sentence: “Is there anything Mike Trout can’t catch?”

As for the fish being released, Tyler Trout explained that this was mostly because it was too heavy to be hoisted into the boat.

It might also have something to do with the fact that goliath groupers, which can measure more than eight feet and weigh up to 800 pounds, are a prohibited species.

The Florida record is a 680-pound specimen landed off Fernandina Beach in 1961.

Since 1990, however, it has been illegal to harvest and possess a goliath grouper in federal waters throughout the southeastern U.S.

So Mike Trout is not only a great baseball player and fisherman (with a name like Trout, he’d better be), but a conservationist.
