Heinrich Deters, 41, is a longtime Park City, Utah, local who loves where he lives. As the Park City Municipal Trails and Open Space project manager, he’s responsible for one of the best mountain bike trail systems in the country. And as a former racer, he samples them all regularly. Married to wife Julie, with two children–Harley, 2, and aptly named Race, 5 months–you can find him riding and camping with his family when not planning new routes for cyclists or testing the wheeled wares himself. “I’m fortunate to have landed a job I love, helping plan, implement, and maintain the area’s trail system and open space,” he says, confessing to taking 112th in the 2011 Tour des Suds race in Park City with his daughter in a car seat mounted on his handlebars.
Here are a few of his favorite things in Park City:

Aspect of the region in the off-season: Desert trips in the spring, and no crowds in the fall.
Place to mountain bike: Empire Canyon in Park City. It’s great single track with lots of options, and just minutes from the Main Street bars and restaurants. Second best: Stanley, Idaho.
Place to ride with the family: Snyderville Basin Special Recreation District, which is adjacent to Park City and has built a wonderful bike park for all ages and abilities. My 2-year-old loves the pump track.
Place to paddle (flatwater): Our family is really into standup paddleboarding. My 2-year-old can ride the nose while I get some positive recreational time. Jordanelle Reservoir is just minutes from the house and provides great views of the back of the Wasatch Range.
Place to paddle (whitewater): I like to stay in a big boat and better yet, cast my fly rod toward unsuspecting trout. That said, the Rouge River in Oregon and the Green River in Utah, both of which are close by, offer some of the best rafting, fishing and, of course, drinking around.
Place to paddle with the family: I keep the rafting and fishing trips amongst the boys…my wife understands and the kids have a few years before they get an invite. But we do like heading out to Jordanelle Reservoir together.
Place for a beer afterwards: I am a gin/tonic guy, best served on my back deck.
