The reason Jonathan Fielding’s voice is so calm in the accompanying video is because he did not expect the plane he and his family–including an infant son–were flying in would endure a violent crash landing that would leave the aircraft upside-down. Remarkably, nobody was seriously hurt. (Pay special attention at the 1:25 mark.)

The flight over rural Utah, aboard a Cessna 175, was a gift for Jonathan’s wife, Kara. With them were their 7-month-old son and Kara’s mother. The pilot, Lynn Goodsell, provided the flight free of charge as a birthday gift.

Jonathan Fielding was recording the trip with his cell phone and somehow remained calm even after Goodsell informed him that the carburetor had iced over, the engine had shut down, and they’d have to attempt an emergency landing in one of the snowy fields below.

“So this is kind of exciting,” Fielding narrates in the video. “I’m not worried. I think we’re going to be just fine. …But this is kind of scary, and kind of exciting at the same time.” Everyone else aboard the aircraft is eerily silent as the plane slowly descends.

Fielding fully expected the landing to be smooth. Otherwise, he states in the video description, he would not have been recording.

Goodsell chose a field instead of one of the roads that can be seen in the footage because of dangers the roads presented: traffic and power lines.

But because the snow was so thick in the field, it caught the landing gear and flipped the plane forward. It came to rest upside-down, leaving the passengers to carefully unbuckle and climb out of the aircraft.

“No one was hurt in the accident save for bruises, whiplash, and minor cuts,” Fielding states.

According to a CBS News report, the phone flew from Fielding’s hands upon impact, but continued to record the crash and the reactions of the passengers, including the crying baby.

The incident is under investigation by the FAA and NTSB.
