Rare baby Echidna puggle finds home at Australian zoo

The Taronga Zoo in Sydney has an adorable new addition, a baby Australian hedgehog named Beau, who is one of the youngest wild Australian hedgehogs the zoo’s staff has ever seen.

Beau, who in Australia is known as an Echidna puggle, was only about 30 days old when he was found on a walking path in Anna Bay, about 120 miles north of Sydney, according to the Taronga Zoo.

“It’s quite possible that it just fell out of mum’s pouch, because it would still be in mum’s pouch at that time,” said the vet nurse in the video above.

It is extremely rare to see an echidna puggle as young as Beau in the wild because Echidna mothers usually hide their young in burrows for several months from the time they are about 50 days old, the zoo said. Beau’s vet nurse has never seen one his age in the 15 years she has been working with sick and injured animals at the zoo.

It’s not known yet whether Beau is a boy or a girl, but he or she will eventually grow spines as he becomes an adult.

In the video, Beau is seen slurping up milk off the hand of his nurse, who brings him home with her at night.
