Starlings perform captivating aerial ballet over streets of San Francisco

European starlings are a captivating sight during their seasonal murmurations, or massive swirling ballets that almost seem choreographed. These magnificent fall and winter events often occur in the wilderness, out of human sight. But recently a prolonged murmuration was witnessed above the streets of downtown San Francisco, and captured on videotape by a YouTube user named Barbary Coast. It’s certainly worth a glimpse, for at least the first minute or two (but you’ll want to check out the second video, too):

This is reminiscent of another starling murmuration captured in 2011 by filmmakers Sophie Clive and Liberty Smith, on Ireland’s River Shannon. That two-minute production, “A chance encounter and shared moment with one of nature’s greatest and most fleeting phenomena,” became an Internet sensation and is among the most captivating murmuration videos ever produced.
