With the influx of amazing footage this year in the world of paddling, it’s only fitting that Canoe and Kayak Magazine decided put on the first annual Canoe and Kayak Awards.
The award show is set to take place August 2 in downtown Salt Lake City, to recognize talented paddlers, explorers, and filmmakers that have elevated their sport to a new level.
The categories to be voted on by the fans are male and female Paddler of the Year, Expedition of the Year, Movie of the Year, Reel of the Year, and the Paddle with Purpose award, which honors philanthropic efforts by and for paddlers.
The award show relies heavy on fan participation as the winners in each category will be chosen by 100% online voting.

The nominees represent the diversity and talent in modern paddling, and some devilishly hard choices: How do we choose between such groundbreaking expeditions as the Ellesmere Circumnavigation (1,500 miles over ice and Arctic waters) and the Grand Inga Project (the first descent of the world’s biggest rapids)? Does Freya Hoffmeister’s eight-month, 5,000-mile South American epic trump Adriene Levknecht’s Green Race dominance for Female Paddler of the Year? What male paddler had the biggest year– Boomer, Levinson, Chalupsky? Dane Jackson or Mike Dawson?
Here’s a look at the Grand Inga Project that is nominated for Expedition of the Year:
