Amid all the talk about the hantavirus pulmonary syndrome outbreak in Yosemite National Park comes an incredible video created from the park’s annual Stars over Yosemite event. The HD-quality, time-lapse video that is now making the rounds on the Internet is absolutely incredible. See, not all the news coming out of Yosemite is bad. Cast your eyes on this from Yosemite Nature Notes:
As you can see, there is more to Yosemite National Park than just El Capitan, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, Tuolumne Meadows, and the Tunnel View. There’s also Glacier Point, where you can view the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, Ring Nebula, M50 Galaxy, meteors, and an unlimited amount of stars.
Many urbanites, whose view of the night sky is polluted by the city lights, can’t believe how many stars there are when they view them from Yosemite.
“This is one of the best places in the country to observe the night skies,” astronomer Morris Jones said. “We have not only dark skies, as we’re well away from the city lights, but we also have steady skies. It’s just something about the nature of being here at 7,200 feet–I’ve probably had more good nights at Glacier Point than anywhere else.”
So, next time you ponder a trip to Yosemite, think about its star quality and take in the night sky.
