  • R.I.P. Jeremy Lusk 11/26/1984 - 02/09/2009

    Freestyle Motocross Star Dies

Jeremy Lusk, of Temecula, CA, has died after he under-rotated a Hart Attack backflip and slammed head first into the dirt on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Costa Rica. He sustained severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury, said Jorge Ramirez, chief of the intensive care unit at Calderon Hospital.

Lusk survived an initial surgery late Saturday night that was intended to stem brain swelling, even though his chances of surviving the procedure were low.

"He was in a medicine-induced coma as a protective measure, and the medicine was being reduced to see how his organism responded," said Ramirez.

"That didn't mean he was going to wake up. He was in shock and that got worse last night, until he stopped responding and entered into cardiac and respiratory failure."

He died with wife, Lauren, his parents, and friends at his side at approximately 11:30 PM PST.

Lusk had just come off an incredibly successful 2008 season, in which he took home Freestyle gold and Best Trick silver at the X Games, and in the process landed the first ever double grab Hart Attack backflip. He also won both Freestyle and Best Trick gold at the X Games Mexico, finished third overall in Freestyle on the '08 Dew Tour, and earned a bronze helmet at the Moto X World Championships.

A trust has been set up in his memory, and donations can be made through the Athlete Recovery fund, www.athleterecoveryfund.com. Jeremy Lusk will be sorely missed and the staff at GrindTV offers our deepest condolences to his family and friends. My heart goes out to the family and friends of Jeremy. I never saw him in person, but I saw him alot on T.V. and he was amazing. It's such a tragedy to lose someone so great and so young but knowing that he was doing what he loved and that made him happy, and that he lived his life to the fullest makes alot of difference.
I lost a little brother at 13, and he died doing what he loved to do and even though it doesn't make it right it makes me happy to no he was happy.
I'm glad that Jeremy was able to have happiness and fun and that he did what he loved and did so very well.
For all the negative comments! Take a look at your life. Are you truly happy doing what you do? If more of us did what we really wanted to do, what makes us happy, then maybe this world wouldn't be so Fucked up. Think about it.
      RIP Jeremy.

GodJesusYeshuaHolySpirit in fact there is no difference between doing it for "kicks" as you say and being someones someone job (police, fire, etc.) I should know, look at my screen name. I have been in law enforcement for 15 years. First of all they make a choice to do it (for fun or type of career they are getting into)and the wife and family are well aware of the risks. Doing it for entertainment or for work does not change the fact that either way they can have possible deadly outcomes. As you know everyone thinks different. On the other hand everyone is on the same page that this is very sad, for his family and fans. It is very unfortunate that this comes with the turf with these type of activities.

        To Deputydog:

You're right in most of your post, but.. There is a huge difference in doing things like this as a hobby and doing them professionally. The most notable thing with doing things like this professionally is the demand for bigger and more awe inducing stunts. Those are the type of things someone is more likely to get hurt on, though.

I'm not sure I'm really making sense though. I've skateboarded casually for years, and I've come to know people who do the same. Some of these friends are sponsored and occasionally need to get promotional photos and film. And the stunts they do in those situations always are much bigger than the stuff they do when skating casually.

All in all, there is a big difference in the two approaches to the sport. But sure, you can get hurt on any stunt that goes wrong..

What a tragic accident.I do believe he would have had a better chance for survival if this would have happened in the USA. The medical care he received at the event was the most shocking thing i have ever seen. The total lack of caution they gave him probably caused more harm. They did not place him in a cervical collar, they took his helmet off which is a HUGE mistake, they rolled him onto the backboard without any regard to his spinal cord possibly being injured. They never took the time to strap his head to the backboard and then they took off running with him. Its just a sad thing and his family is in my prayers. If i was them i would be looking into a lawsuit against whoever put on the show and whoever the medical staff was.

emtshocked relax. cripes, talking lawsuits? Gimme a break. Doesn't matter WHERE or HOW he was treated. He was NOT coming back. Watch the impact. They ran him out because he was DEAD. His head neck/trauma was too severe. They probably did NOT want to take the time to intubate him until they whisked him behind the scenes. The ONLY thing working was his heart. Otherwise a dead organism at that point. So sad, but that's the reality. Looks like you are an emt. While I respect your work and knowledge, I know your knowledge is limited to what you do and know. Take 10 minutes to secure his head? Not when he isn't breathing. He hit the ground at about 30 mph with his entire weight and part of the bike's weight on his head and neck. Jeremy was mortally wounded. RIP. At LEAST they weren't so insensitive to try to tube the guy whose neck is obviously broken, considering they do NOT tube people every day. Figures somebody would start babbling about LAWSUITS. Only in America.

Urbanmd...Were you there? How do you know he wasn't breathing? You don't, I don't know how you practice medicine, but I don't want you as my Dr. So if he was dead then why did he have surgery after getting to the hospital? Why was he placed into a medically induced coma? Do they normally do that to DEAD people....No...you are an idiot!!!!That would explain why you were offended by the lawsuit comment. I bet you have seen your fair share of lawsuits.

Look DUMMY....do your research. Costa Rica doc said they removed a bone flap and left it open cuz his brain was too swollen. I don't NEED to be there. I have a BRAIN and EYES. YOU don't know SQUAT about much, apparently...now that we're getting PERSONAL here, idiot! You started the B.S., showing your true intelligence--MINIMAL. Now, go blow another I.V. and tube someone's esophagus....like you probably do half the time.
The fact that you are probably WHITE TRASH is why YOU even brought UP the lawsuit. You don't know DIKK about his treatment, and you start chiming lawsuit. ****!!! LMAO!!!!

      An Official Statement from GrindTV:

The tragic death of Jeremy Lusk has engendered emotional debate within our community. We are truly touched by the tremendous support for Jeremy and his loved ones from the vast majority of our members, both old and new. However, the world is a complicated place, and not everyone sees this event the same way. That's okay. Diversity is what makes this community and this country great.

GrindTV prides itself on being an open forum, free from censorship, and open to opposing viewpoints. The action sports world lives to challenge conventional wisdom, and we refuse to sacrifice our ideals to police small minds and petty cyber tyrants. We prefer to let you post as you see fit, and then watch gleefully as the more enlightened and intelligent members of our community expose your hypocrisy, prejudice and hatred. This is the way freedom works, and we're cool with it.

But there is a line. If you threaten someone, or disparage someone's family, or advocate violence, we will delete your post, and quite possibly, your entire profile. And you best hope we don't run into you at the track, or in the lineup, or on the street. Because some things you just don't do. And we protect our own.

      Thanks,

      Greg and Erik

Thank you!! I was really upset with how it turned into a really self centered forum-some of the topics and comments did not even pertain to the subject-a very sensitive one! I think some people were on here-bored-and wanted to pull some chains and people let them. Some, I think just don't think before they act. Some let others get into their heads and take over. When emotions run high-sometimes we don't stop to think-who is in control here? me or them? I went to bed, pondering the whole deal-I tried to remind myself that even my views may be right for some and for others, not so much. The big deal for me today is to try to remember that-I don't have to let people in my head and that others can be an ass if they want. ( I used to be really good at it:))It's what I do with it, that matters. I love the freedom of being an individual, but I am responsible for my choices and there are consequences for the poor ones that I make. I just wish more people could get that. Don't get me wrong-I do NOT feel like I am better than anyone else-maybe I have learned a little more than some when it comes to how I treat others-regardless of how I feel- and I mean FEEL!!
Peace to all u out there that got upset last night! Don't let 'em get to u! That's what they want.

First and foremost, Our respect and condolences go out to Jeremy's family and friends.

Second, to all of you that have nothing better to do with your time other than talking smack on a tribute to a great legend, it will come back to you.

My 8 year old son races motocross and has for 2 1/2 years now. When he grows up he wants to do Freestyle. As a loving mother, I encourage him to do what he loves. Yes, there are dangers with this sport, but there are also dangers in football or baseball. Unless you are in the sport, you have NO CLUE what it is like. The people and families that you see at every race are awesome! When someone asks me why I let my son ride motocross, I tell them, "It is Dirty, Clean Fun!" I know where my children are and what they are doing. They are not in GANGS (As some of you have mentions the MM's are! NOT!!), they are not doing drug and they are not out getting pregnant at an early age.

And Last of All, did you all forget what this tribute was for? It is to let the family and friends know how Jeremy will be missed, and how great of an athlete he was. Jeremy set the bar high, and it will be hard for that bar to be reached. This was a tragedy, but he was doing what he loved to do. I give him KUDOS for letting it all hang out.

Believe it or not this does not happen that often. This last year has been bad. We have lost a few great riders in our area to freak accidents.

Our prayers and hearts go out to ALL OF Those Families! (Rocky #446, Troy, and Jeremy)

Again, Give it up people! Have a little respect!

      R.I.P.

      Love Team McWhirk
