Mansoor goes skiing every weekend. Mohammed goes skiing six times a week ... all year long. Incredibly, both enjoy a winter hobby without having to travel to the seasonal winter hotspots. Instead, they live in a desert hotspot that offers year-round skiing--Dubai. Yes, Dubai, of all places. Thanks to Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East, Mansoor, 21, and Mohammed, 26, can enjoy skiing every day of the year in Dubai, despite its averaging 104 degrees in the summer and 88 degrees in the winter. Their story, and the story of Ski Dubai, is captured beautifully and artistically in "Dubai: A Skier's Journey," a video story that is well worth its nine minutes:
Ski Dubai is located in the Mall of Emirates. It has five ski runs of varying length and difficulty. It's longest run is 437 yards, or more than four football fields. The facility is five stories tall. Desalinated seawater is used for snowmaking. It has a quad lift, a tow lift and a magic carpet to deliver skiers and snowboarders to the top of their runs. And it has a group of dedicated, local skiers.
Video narrator Chad Sayers says, "In the unlikeliest places, there's a community of committed skiers." One of them is Mansoor, who has never skied outdoors. "I like to ski," he says in the video. "It's going fast--the speed--I like the speed."
Incredibly, he can go downhill fast, on skis. Right in the middle of the desert.
