It's not exactly BMX-related, but it does pass the time on the road, and inspire the idea of the crew through Zach Galifianakis' idea of the "The Wolfpack." Enter the Full Circle Bike Shop crew. They are not road tripping to Vegas in a convertible Mercedes or harboring stolen tigers in their bathroom, but their featured video is definitely Hangover-inspired. ![]() Consisting of Corey Sampson, Austin James, Austin Carmel and special guest Andre Postell, Full Circle Bike Shop crew is based out of Western Massachusetts, and according to their profile, "ride bikes as much as possible." But what's more? Their featured video, once you get past the hilarious introduction that involves actual stunts from Austin James (and lots of soda), is the very definition of a dialed crew video. There's teamwork, original street, park and dirt riding that navigates between tech and big, and doesn't forget that creative spot searching sometimes involves uprooted trees. Because Full Circle's crew is based in Western Mass., there's a healthy amount of park footage, but if you've got the technical know-how of Andre Postell, then that's not a bad thing. In the end, Full Circle Bike Shop turns up the heat, keeps it fun and brings the idea of a BMX Wolfpack home like no other crew in BMX right now. Check their video for the goods and go find Doug... ![]() ![]() Channels: Bike The Chosen Skateboarder recapUnless you've been living under a rock for the past month you've seen the Nike Chosen ads with P-Rod, Theotis and Omar all over TV, the internet, during NBA Finals, on billboards and every where else humanly possible. And if you went to the Nike Chosen site then you know that Nike is looking to take one of the nation's best skate crews to Barcelona in August with P-Rod and the Nike SB team for a week. Aside from that Nike is giving away: --Cash Prize: up to $40,000 ($10,000 for each crew member) --An invite to the US Premier of Nike SB movie --Crew flies to the Premier and enjoys VIP status throughout the event --Custom P Rod V for each member of your crew --Video releases of your trip --Digital takeover Chosen Crew celebration So how do you win? Easy. Do what you always do; go out and film your skate crew (no more than 4 dudes. Must be 18 or older.) and edit together a short video of you and the homies ripping and having a good time. After that it comes down to self-promotion. Spread the word all over the web. The crew with the most Facebook Likes will be noticed and then judged by P-Rod and the Nike SB Team. It's pretty easy but time is running out! Only 3 weeks left (Round 1 ends July 29th) to get your video up. All the details can be found HERE. Here are the top 5 videos so far with less than 3 weeks to go: Familia With a huge lead since day one, Steve Nesser's Minneapolis-based shop has produced a video worthy of winning it all. NJ Skateshop New Jersey's blue-collar, hard-working skateshop delivers an amazing video of raw skating and rough spots. Reign Skateshop Chris Cole's skateshop has made a big name for itself in a very short amount of time by bringing the world new jacks Tom Asta and Ishod Wair. Well, the rest of the team rips as well as seen in this footage. D.R.E.A.M Crew Dallas, Texas area D.R.E.A.M crew is led by Kechaud Johnson who has made a lot of noise in the past year on the contest circuit. This video shows he's a one-man crew. Tetra This San Antonio-based crew is a recent entry and one of our favorites. For some young guys they skate with amazing style and trick selection. They might not beat Familia but they've definitely got our attention. Channels: Skate What's in a (Crew) Name?An ounce of originality, a dash of alliteration, maybe a pun. Probably a good story, at least. What follows are the genesis tales for the names of four (and a half) leading surf crews in the Nike Chosen contest. Crew Name: Neck Rash ![]() Backstory, as told by crew member Jamie Parkhurst: "A few friends and I were skating around Venice, just sightseeing and such. So we're hanging out on the grass enjoying a beverage and some old surf dog bum came and sat next to us. I don't know why, but he kept calling me 'neck rash.' I did not have a rash on my neck. He continued to tell us these stories of the glory days, and how he burned Martin Potter in a heat once and really didn't give a shit, and between every little tale he would look at me and say, 'Are you listening, Neck Rash?' So when I was asked to come up with a name for a surf dog crew, all I could think about was that old dog and my Neck Rash nickname." ![]() Crew Name: Raw Jersey Crew Backstory, as told by crew member Rob Kelly: "I don't really remember how the name originated, but we've been calling ourselves the Raw Jersey Crew for a while. As far as the tattoos, yeah, they are real. We got them when [writer] Matt Walker from SURFING Mag came to hang out with us to work on a story about New Jersey when we were in high school. We got 'RJC' tattooed in our lips so we would make the magazine, and it worked." Crew Name: Dirty Harry and the Bandits Backstory, as told by crew member Jason Harris: "Basically, [crew member Matt Payne] and I got this little Super-8, just total rookies. We filmed a bunch of rolls and got it processed, and we were tripping out how cool the raw stuff looked. Matt wanted to edit something, and he'd heard some people calling me Harry or Harold, and Wardo used to call me Dirty Harry sometimes. Then Matt was watching the actual Dirty Harry Clint Eastwood movie, and he was like, 'Dude, we should do something sick with this.'" Crew Name: Wild Lyfe ![]() Backstory, as told by crew member Raven Lundy: "Driving home from Hatteras one day, I was with my buddy Eddie. He does a lot of our filming, we do a lot of filming and cutting together, been best friends forever. We were in the car, just talking shit back and forth. We'd just had one of those super sessions, so good, like words can't describe what you just felt -- when you get barreled, get blown out. I don't know, we just came up with 'wild life,' and changed it to a Y, and thought, 'Maybe let's feed off that and get some energy.' It just started as a cool name -- is it about partying, or is it, like, animals? We'll walk up to random people going, 'What's the Wild Lyfe?' It's funny, it strikes up conversation. I asked some guys the other night, they're like, 'It's co-cayyyne!' I'm like, 'Are you kidding me dude? Where'd you get that from?'" Crew Name: Chomp Proper ![]() Backstory, as told by crew member Matt Meola: [Actually, the story of the Chomp Proper name is better left shrouded in mystery. It originated with a friend's harrowing trip to Africa, and for the benefit of all parties, no more will be said about it here.] See these and other crews put their skills on display -- or, hey, where's your crew? -- on the Chosen portal now. Channels: Surf Tetra CrewDamn! This Tetra crew is sick. Like the D.R.E.A.M. Crew, Tetra is also from the Lone Star State of Texas; specifically San Antonio. They say everything is bigger in Texas and for some little dudes Drake Flores, Will Flores, Tommy Wilkinson and Isaiah Rendon prove it on some big spots. You don't usually expect young kids to have such solid style especially when demonstrating some tech-gnar on gaps and rails but these kids rip and look good doing it. Some notables were definitely Will Flores' front board big spinout and Drake Flores' hurricane down the handrail and 270 front board. Real smooth looking. These are the types of unknown gems we're looking for The Chosen. Great video, guys. We're just curious, did you name yourselves after the Texas Equestrian Trail Riders Association? ![]() ![]() ![]() Channels: Skate Year of the (Under)DogsIt's important now to stand back for a second and appreciate that Maui's Chomp Proper crew is enjoying a (surf) cultural moment. A renaissance. An unlikely Marky-Mark-Wahlberg-in-Rock Star-or-again-in-Invincible heroism that should inspire any kid or crew with big dreams but small followings. ![]() Chomp Proper has been Noticed -- officially, in Nike's Chosen contest, but also noticed by the surf world in general as the freakishly unsung talents they are. Thanks to the videos they're putting out (including in Taylor Steele's Innersection contest, which crew member Matt Meola won in 2010 and which fellow member Albee Layer may well take down this year), the magazine profiles and media attention they've garnered, and their humble underdog appeal, Chomp Proper is on a major roll. The reason it's remarkable is that these guys are not, say, 12 years old -- the age at which most surf notables emerge from out of nowhere to wide acclaim. Surfing hunts and loves and spoils its prodigies, its Kolohe Andinos and Owen Wrights, and by 20 all the talented stones are largely turned. How often is a pro "discovered" after high school? But in the rush to scout young potential, just as quickly are laggards booted off their rocket ship to stardom -- usually due to an injury or a bad growth spurt or a few too many comp losses. Reality strikes like a drunken marine, and few aspiring pros can rebound when the industry and media turn their backs -- when they're no longer hot preteen product on the verge of a breakout. Enter Chomp Proper. ![]() Three of the crew's members -- Dege O'Connell, Hank Gaskell and Albee Layer -- are former grom darlings. They all made NSSA Nationals finals; they had major sponsors (Quiksilver, Hurley and Billabong respectively) and bright futures. But all three missed the jump from teen phenom to big-league pro, lost their sponsors, and ended up back on Maui quietly ripping harder than ever. For most former child surf stars, that's where the story would end. To see the guys turning heads now after a hiatus from the gravy train is both unusual and refreshing. It's possible after all. The dream doesn't die at 17. Chomp Proper member Matt Meola, meanwhile, is on a whole different post-prodigy trip. He got a late start, skating as a kid while his peers were already gathering passport stamps and amateur titles, and even after he turned to surfing there was no easy on-ramp to the big show. "I was 15 or 16 when I did my first year of NSSA and I never really did that well," Matt told SURFING Magazine last year, "and then as I got a little bit older I just realized it wasn't for me." It wasn't really until Matt's homegrown skills appeared online in a 2010 video clip that things picked up steam. He won Steele's Innersection competition and $100,000, got a new sponsor, and cemented himself among the ranks of the young and hyper-progressive. In a year of big stories for surfing, Matt was one of the biggest. Now, Nike's Chosen contest is a chance for the Chomp Proper boys to chalk up another guerrilla success. But even if they don't get tapped to win -- only one crew will, after all -- they've already made a statement and a heap of new fans, and nobody's underestimating them anymore. What's next is anyone's guess. It's not even winter yet. ![]() ![]() Channels: Surf |
