I love it that this shark was jumping at the top of the hour that morning... 9:00am, 10:00am... it's almost like it was showing off for the camera. " | The Maloof Money Cup: Skateboarding's Biggest Pay DayIn just its second year running, the Maloof Money Cup has become the biggest event in skateboarding thanks to more than $450,000 up for grabs. Joe and Gavin Maloof, who own the Sacramento Kings, have jumped into the sport after befriending a number of the best skaters at The Palms in Las Vegas, which they also own. In true Maloof fashion, they spared no expense in the construction of the course. Both the vert ramp and the street course are state of the art, designed by the best skaters in the world. The vert ramp came equipped with a mini-mega ramp running through the middle, which added an entirely new twist to the vert competition. Meanwhile, on the street course, every feature built was a perfect replica of a legendary street skating venue. The event attracts a huge crowd to the Orange County Fairgrounds, and among the onlookers this year was Kobe Bryant and Snoop Dogg. In the vert category, 18-year old Alex Perelson beat out longtime skating legends Bob Burnquist, Pierre-Luc Gagnon, Andy Macdonald and Buckey Lasek after pulling off a 900 on his very first attempt in the Final. While joining the likes of Tony Hawk in the 900 club, Perelson took home $75,000 for the Vert Cup. But at the Maloof Money Cup, the big money is reserved for the street division, where celebrated skaters like Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez and Greg Lutzka were among those battling for the $100,000 first prize. But it was Chris Cole, of Philly, who rolled away with the win. Cole was sticking every move he tried, thrilling the huge crowd. Results of Vert Finals 1. Alex Perelson 2. Pierre-Luc Gagnon 3.
