I'm sure they do occasionally occur, but overall, they're fairly rare.

As long as people choose to do things where the odds are stacked against them, tragedies are bound to follow.
My heart goes out to the victims, and the family and friends of these victims.

It's no secret why so many sharks attack so many people; science knows hundreds of times more about shark behavior than they did just a few years ago; yet the incidence of fatal attacks on surfers just keeps going up; and as long as more and more people keep taking up surfing, it will continues to keep going up.

I'm certainly not against surfing, but at the same time, I recognize that it's potentially a very hazardous sport. As for answers on "how to solve the problem", I really don't think there are any. The ocean is, always has been, and always will be, a very dangerous environment; one which I personally rarely choose to enter."
