"Regardless of what kind of fish are common in Australian waters, and regardless of what incorrect names people might give them, it has nothing to do with the real "problem"; namely, surfers being attacked and killed by sharks.

I feel very badly for anyone who is attacked by a big shark, whether they are killed or not; surfing is a fabulous sport, no doubt about it; but it is also a potentially extremely dangerous sport. Think about this for just a minute; how long have there been sharks in the world's oceans ? Millions of years; I don't know exactly how long people have been surfing, but it's probably less than 100 years or so. Maybe even 200 years, who knows ?

There are a lot of people who regularly get into the ocean for various reasons, such as marine biologists, and more and more, wildlife photographers, who are constantly trying to satisfy the public's insatiable demand for ever more "harrowing" film footage; yet fatal attacks by sharks and various other large marine creatures on these individuals are relatively rare. I'm sure they do occasionally occur, but overall, they're fairly rare.

As long as people choose to do things where the odds are stacked against them, tragedies are bound to follow.
My heart goes out to the victims, and the family and friends of these victims.

It's no secret why so many sharks attack so many people; science knows hundreds of times more about shark behavior than they did just a few years ago; yet the incidence of fatal attacks on surfers just keeps going up; and as long as more and more people keep taking up surfing, it will continues to keep going up.

I'm certainly not against surfing, but at the same time, I recognize that it's potentially a very hazardous sport. As for answers on "how to solve the problem", I really don't think there are any. The ocean is, always has been, and always will be, a very dangerous environment; one which I personally rarely choose to enter."
