I would never try to kill someones dreams, and that's not what the issue is. it is when you want something so bad that ignore the experts telling you it is to late in the year to begin it.
Let me put this to you another way; if you wanted to go sky diving and you saved up for it all summer long, then you get to the air field and they are all out of parachutes. You want his so bad so you are not giving up, you are determined to go sky diving. So begin asking around and you find someone selling a parachute. you buy it and show up at the air field, and they ask how in the heck did you find a chute? you tell them you brought it on the street. so they inspect it and find that the threads are badly warn and it is showing signs of stress in the seams. they are the experts and they tell you that it is not safe to jump with your parachute. they warn you that it could be fatal. this is the real issue at hand, no one was trying to kill Abby's dream, but the experts told her that she blew her window when she lost too months for repairs. they said that she would be crossing the Indian ocean at the worst possible time. when she ignored those who were trying to help her accomplish her dreams, she at that point put others at risk. by ignoring them, her dream is now put on hold. I hope she tries again, but at the right time & hopefully she will complete it. In closing when following a dream as dangerous as this one, you must listen to the voice of those who are trying to help you succeed. even if its not what you want to hear.
Many climb Mt Everest only to find out that just 200 feet from the top and the experts tell them they must go down because a storm is approaching. but there have been those who defied the experts and when on only to get caught on the Mt. then rescuers must put them self's at risk. our dreams are (our) dreams. but when you want it so bad that you put others at risk because you refuse the experts then in my opinion it is wrong.
I do help our children every day i am a guidance counselor. And one of the most important lessens is to follow their dreams and work hard at achieving them ever when things fail, to learn from their failures. but i also teach them to learn from those around them. i would never encourage them to follow their dreams in the path of harms way. what all of you are missing is that Abby was not just crossing the street or going to school. she was going to circle the world!!! and she surrounded her self with expert advice in order to succeed at her dream. her mistake was to ignore the very ones that could help her succeed at her dream. and for that reason i can accept her choice as a wise choice. in the end she made a decision to leave port simply for the glory of a record and not the dream!!
