The formal plans were announced this week to nine invited athletes during a dryland training camp at the USSA Center of Excellence in Park City. The announcement comes on the heels of a decision by the International Olympic Committee to add halfpipe skiing to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.Athletes invited to the first U.S. Freeskiing Pro Halfpipe Team for the 2011-12 season include some of America's greatest stars of the newest Olympic sport including X Games champions Jen Hudak and Simon Dumont. Nine athletes were invited based on competition results from the past season. The selection process for the inaugural Olympic team will be determined over the next two years with that team being named just prior to the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. "These are the best American athletes competing in the sport today," said U.S. Snowboarding and U.S. Freeskiing Director Jeremy Forster. "They have played a key role in the formation of their sport and helped influence the IOC decision to include halfpipe skiing through their skills as athletes." Channels: Snow Interview: Torin Yater-Wallace Torin Yater-Wallace bursted unto the ski scene two years ago by claiming victories in the Pro-Am division at the young age of 14. This past season, Torin was elevated to pro-status thanks to impressive skiing at every major contest he entered. He's now the youngest member of the ultra-elite Target Snow Team and joins the likes of Simon Dumont and Shaun White. Now at the ripe age of 15, Torin has already accomplished quite a lot, so Newschoolers' Brandon Ascher sat down with him to get the low down on what's next for this ski prodigy. Interview by Brandon Ascher The skiers, brands, community and media contributing to the ski world have worked very hard over the last ten years to grow the sport into the freight train it is today. It's been said many times that things will eventually "slow down". With doubles/triples going down in the same year, contests being more exciting than ever and the Internet propelling our media into a new realm, what more can we expect? The youth has always been the driving force behind what is to come; Mike Wilson, Simon Dumont, Sean Pettit and Phil Casabon are just a few of the names who have been bestowed "the next big thing" title over the years, and now in 2011 the list of skiers pushing the boundaries is seemingly endless. Although this season, one athlete in particular has made his presence known. 15-year-old Torin Yater-Wallace out of Basalt, Colorado has smashed through the glass ceiling of professional skier stardom with impressive performances at the Dew Tour, X Games and European X Games. Lets see where he'll take us next... When and where did you start skiing? When I was one and a half years old at Snowmass ski resort. When did you get into freeskiing? Was there a moment when it became something you wanted to pursue? Or was it more natural? Well I started out in normal ski lessons until I was about six and was so anxious to do jumps and tricks, which none of the classes offered, so I joined the Aspen Valley Ski Club and skied moguls from when I was seven until I was 12. Then I moved up to the freeride park team and have been skiing park and pipe since. Head on over to Newschoolers for the full interview and all the nitty gritty details on Torin. Channels: Snow Hurricane Season: Interview with Andrew Holson The third and final installment of Hurricane Season just hit the web and Newschoolers' Rocky Maloney caught up with Andrew Holson to get the low down on the project, his vision for upcoming seasons, and what inspired the weather-related name. Read on for the interview and peep the final episode below. Words by Rocky Maloney Photos by Rocky Maloney Explain the title "Hurricane Season" and where it came from. Well it started out while I was water ramping in Lake Placid, which I am terrible at. There were some hilarious Russians aerialists around while I was there and my good friend Mike Bruno was joking about how my name was "Igor the Hurricane" and that I was going to drop the Hurricane Flip (a full-triple-full-full) every time I was about to drop in. Some how the name "Hurricane" stuck after that and that's where the title comes from. What has been your main goal in producing Hurricane Season? Basically what I've been hoping to do is make a web series with filming, editing, and hopefully skiing that is all above the bar, and something that is different and unique in comparison to the usual everyday edit. Head on over to Newschoolers for the rest of the interview here. Sammy Carlson at Snowboarder Superpark 15Skiing sensation Sammy Carlson strutted his stuff at Snowboarder Mag's Superpark 15 which was held at Mt. Bachelor last week. Newschoolers' Jeff Schmuck caught up with Sammy to hear all about the experience and what it was like to slay along side the snowboarders.Interview by Jeff Schmuck Photos by Brian Dalrymple So tell us about the edit you just dropped Sammy. It's all from last week at Snowboarder Superpark. I got invited again by Pat Bridges from Snowboarder Magazine, which was truly an honor and I'd like to take the time to thank him so much for having me there. I've been riding at Superpark for the past few years by kind of sneaking in the back door after I told Pat three years ago that I loved the features and would be stoked on the opportunity to hit a few of them. So he ended up letting me ride there a few years back, and it went really well so I got to come back last year, and then this year I got an official invite. So I came out and brought a whole film crew with me in full force and just slayed it. And how did it go being one of the only skiers to ever hit Snowboarder Superpark? It went real well compared to years past. I definitely felt some vibes being the only skier waiting at the top of the in-run and hitting the features, because it's just me and like 30 other snowboarders hitting them. So there was definitely some tension, because I could tell there were some snowboarders who didn't want me there, but it wasn't serious animosity or anything. There was one issue where I had to wait to hit the hip for a while until the snowboarders had made a good rut in the take-off, and then when I started hitting they got kind of pissed, saying I was screwing up the jump and all that, but I ended up talking to Pat and one of the guys who builds the features and the X Games course, and they said it was all good, and I ended up getting to do a private shoot on it, which was sick.
