  • Exclusive Nicola Butler Interview

    It's big news when one of the top women's riders switches board companies. We covered it last week, Nicola Butler is now riding for Company Wake. I had a chance to get her feelings on the board change and also catch up on what she is up to. I'll have you know that we definitely had to interupt some of her high school studies for this interview, but it's rad that she's able to balance the wake life and her education. Nicola is a legitimate shredder and has represented this past season in competition and in free riding. We can all expect to see a lot more coverage on Nicola as she progresses her own riding and the entire sport of women's wakeboarding. Enjoy the words...

    ME: What have you been up to in the offseason?
    NB: Just hanging out riding a bunch and trying to do schoolwork

    ME: Working on anything new or goals for the winter?
    NB: Yeah, just working on getting old tricks back and consistent and new tricks of course.

    ME: Any travel plans for the winter?
    NB: Hopefully going to the Philippines for cable worlds in Feb

    ME: It's official now, you're now riding for Company Wake'
    How stoked are you to join the team?
    NB: Really stoked, it's still a small company right now but i believe that big things are gonna start happening and i can't wait for this season

    ME: What aspect of the company appealed to you?
    NB: I think that just joining a rider owned company it would be better in the long run and coming into the company so early its cool because i get to make shots and decide on things and help with the progression.

    ME: What board are you riding in 09?
    NB:I am riding the Severence right now but i am working on my own pro model

    ME: Can you describe the board for us?
    NB:Its a 3 stage rocker and its super quick on the water. I stiffened my board up a little bit so it really locks in on landings and cutting into the wake. I've never ridden a flex board and it definitely took some getting used to but the landings are so soft its unbelievable!

    ME: You've got a solid team at Company. How stoked are you to be riding with the boys on Company?
    NB:Yeah its an awesome team right now and its cool cause i think we are covering every aspect of the sport like freestyle, contest, etc. And its a huge honor to be teammates with Randall!!

    ME: What can we expect to see from you in 09? Anything up your sleeve for next season?
    NB:You will have to wait and see! ;)

    We will be waiting and stoked for the 09 season!

  • Happy Birthday Tony!

    Yesterday, The Legend, Tony Smith had a birthday. While some may say he acts like a 21 year old and others (like his best friend Chase Heavener) tease that he turned 50, Tony celebrated his 42nd Birthday. Tony has been around wake writing, photographing, creating, inspiring, and just being rad. He worked for Wakeboarding Magazine, Alliance Magazine, and now, Fiction Creative. I'm a fan of Tony. He's a stand up guy who you can always count on for a laugh or some words of wisdom. So, Happy Birthday Tony! You'll always be 21 in my book.

  • Wake Games Announced

    We've all been wondering about the 2009 King of Wake schedule. Well, as a little teaser, World Sports and Marketing has given us the green light on the Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. Wake Games will be held at OWC (for those that don't know, Orlando Watersports Complex) from April 23-26. If you haven't heard about this event before, you should have. Let me fill you in.

    I like Wake Games because it's in Orlando and a lot of pro riders show up to throw down. Since the majority of my shred friends live in Orlando, it means I get to catch up riders' family and friends too. It's at the beginning of the season, so for me, it's like a reunion with the folks I haven't seen over the winter months.

    Wake Games is also a rad way to kick off your summer riding. It's a team event with each team comprised of amateur and pro shredders alike. No matter what your skill level, there's a division for you. Each division and competitor counts toward the total team score at the end of the event, which means you're helping out your team and pro rider captain. Wake Games is basically the best opportunity to show up your friends and show off your new steez at the beginning of the King of Wake season.

    The vibe is mellow and focused on having a good time on the water and in the sun at Wake Games. But don't get me wrong, it you're looking for more than a relaxing day on the water you can either shred yourself or brush up on those middle school math skills by tabulating team points throughout the competition.

    If you're still confused about the shenanigans and good times that are the Air Nautique Wake Games, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, just add a blog post and I'll answer your confusion.

  • New Wakeskate!!!

    Welcome to the new SmoothWater wake blog! We will be bringing you all kinds of updates so check back frequently!

    We just got word that CWB and their prime time wakeskater Stu Shinn have released a new wakeskate they've been working on called the Onset. This new design will allow Stu to shred even harder than he already is! The company's press release is below. Look for this deck in stores soon...

    =======

    The ultimate skate. We wanted to bring something totally new to the wakeskate market, but we also wanted a face to go with it; Stu Shinn. After countless talks and testing sessions with Stu, the Onset has been delivered.

    We created three layers of the skate. The top sheet is shaped straight from a skateboard. It has three layers of poplar laminate formed with a true concave top as well as larger kick tails for better ollie response. We then use a seven-ply bottom flat deck for stiffness needed to keep the rocker pattern in shape. In between the top and bottom wood layers is a tri-density foam pad that creates the rebound needed to add the snap off the wake making wake-to-wake tricks bigger than anything and anyone else. With the top deck using the rebound of the foam, the Onset is the best responding wake-to-wake deck on the market.

    The first bi-level design to incorporate a tri-density foam between the layers will change the face of wakeskating. If you don't believe us, just check out what Stu has done on the Onset this year in the attached sequence.

    * Size: 42"
    * Weight: 8.8 lbs
    * Rocker: 1.57"
    * Waist: 15.60"
    * Tip/Tail Width: 10.90"
    * Typical selling price: $249.99

    Available at CWB Dealers. For more information, check out ridecwb.com or e-mail info@ridecwb.com.

  • Company Signs Nicola

    Yes, it's true, Nicola Butler has switch board companies. To which company? Well, Company.

    I had a quick chat with Nicola in early December and she dropped hints of switching board companies. Of course, I had to wonder which company she would head to. To me, it made sense that she would join the Company family. Nicola is known for her insane quiver of tricks, casual presence on the water, hipster attitude, and for dominating the contest scene in her first season. All of these qualities make it clear to me that the new relationship between Nicola Butler and Company should be a perfect fit.

    Any thoughts? What do you think?
