Human beings, according to most medical data, house a superior brain to any living thing on this Earth, yet, everyday, we see this battle of man and animal played out, as if the animal had a hell of a chance to succeed...What I do not understand is what kind of pleasure do you get from killing this wonderful and majestic animal, even if it were a contest, what personal pleasure do you derive from ending its life...???...it belongs in the Ocean and yet, your so called, "superior" brain, told you to kill it, take it out of its environment & stand next to it for a photographic record of the violent event....Please, try and understand what we are trying to convey to you people, who take pleasure in ending a life of this and other living things, here on Earth...Let them live, as they are God's Creatures and He put them here for other reasons and not so that you could spend a day, wallowing in its blood & salt water, for yes, a photographic record of this barbaric event...Let the animals and other creatures live, if possible, for I see no benefit to mankind, or to the field of medicine or any other necessary event that would allow mankind to benefit from the death of this most Majestic Beast..." Links | boob: The Best Of Dave CarnieDave Carnie was the editor of the most notorious skate magazine of all time, Big Brother. It spawned from Steve Rocco's World Industries camp and was later sold to Larry Flynt of Hustler fame, who published the monthly mail box stuffer until its final issue. ![]() In its lifespan the magazine covered skateboarding like no one had up until that time, or ever since. They told it like it was, nothing was out of bounds. If the demo sucked, and this guy was the reason; that's what they wrote. If they told every truck manufacturers they were doing a truck review and were sent free trucks. They reviewed them by pooping on each truck. The publication made national news with stories on how to kill yourself, do drugs or whatever else they were into at the time. One newscaster in particular took it upon herself to make them look as negative as possible. Just to mess with her, when she would show up to do interviews the Big Brother staff would wear shirts calling her a media whore and hats of the competing news channel. Oh yeah, and a good portion of it's staff went on to make up the cast of little television series turned movie trilogy that goes by the name Jackass. Well, Dave Carnie, was the man behind the keyboard of some Big Brother's best and most controversial stories. He has always been an outspoken, straight-shooter, who is not in it to make friends or be part of an industry. And it's his writings that are some of the most remembered. He would do anything for the story, or a laugh. That's why King Publishing and Vans thought it was necessary to release boob, a collection of Dave's best writings from Big Brother. A must have for anyone that read the infamous magazine. I think Dave's personality can be summed up in this Ethan Fowler episode of Epicly Later'd below. He comes in at the 1:04 mark: "One of the first times I met Ethan it was his birthday and me and Tobin went over to his house. And he seemed weird, kind of odd, he was playing jazz really loud, and playing his drums. And he was drinking whiskey, I remember that, and he was only fifteen. I was doing speed at the time, and so I offered him some speed, and he was like 'f-ck yeah?' AND I DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS ONLY FIFTEEN. And then I learned later that he was drunk on whiskey, he was high on speed, but before all that he had dropped two hits of acid. I dunno, obviously I like that kind of thing in people, so we had a good time that night." - Dave Carnie Channels: Skate WeSC in Portland Pt. 1The WeSC crew took a team skate cruise through the ever-so aloof state of Oregon. This is recipe 54. So check out Marc Johnson, Mike Carroll and Eric Koston at work attempting to get clips for quite possibly the biggest skate video of all time. ![]() MJ went on to win a "Thrasher Skater of the Year" trophy because of his section, Carroll got even more hypie and Koston said thanks for the part I'm off to Nike (and that was after Pappalardo already left for Converse, and Alex Olson for Vans). In case you don't know, when you're a major skate company that makes major skate video releases, internet shorts and whatever else, there is a lot of leftover footage. That's what the Crailtap Mini DV series is all about, going back and releasing more. The number is actually the number of the tape used, so in this case they're up to 54. Check it out: Skateboarding And Afghanistan?OK, so the cops in your town won't let you skate the best spots. They say go to that dorky instant-pop-up skate park they built you. You whine and say that park sucks. They say tough sh-t. ![]() Then you go back. The same cop rolls up, remembers you from the first time, gives you a trespassing ticket and takes your board. You go on Twitter and whine-tweet about how your town sucks and there's nowhere to skate and no one understands you. After that, you go on your XBOX and get in a four hour online Modern Warfare battle, as you inhale a box of Hot Pockets...man being a skateboarder in your town is just so hard right? Well, for some skaters in the world the scenes of that video game you play are just another day in real life. And man, they sure wish their cops had so little to worry about that they busted them for skateboarding. Skastistan is an organization that has made Kabul, Afganistan it's hub, and is attempting to bridge the cultural differences between the West and the Middle East through a common bond; skateboarding. The language and customs are universal, and it's just a fun way to get to know each other. The organization is also working to improve the education of the children growing up in and around Kabul, and has made a documentary to get their mission statement across: Skateistan: To Live And Skate Kabul is a beautifully shot film thatfollows the lives of a group of young skateboarders in Afghanistan. Operating against the backdrop of war and bleak prospects, the Skateistan charity project is the world's first co-educational skateboarding school, where a team of international volunteers work with girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 17, an age group largely untouched by other aid programs. French Fred Presents Charles ColletWhere do you start with Fred Mortagne, aka French Fred. He just about single handily changed how skate videos were made (Ty Evans was up to the same tricks across the pond) with his release of the eS video, Menikmati. His cinematic skills are almost unmatched in skateboarding. ![]() He has used cranes and countless others filming innovations that have revolutionized how we view skateboarding on our televisions and computer screens. The French filmer/editor releases internet videos for his skate deck brand Cliche every few months that profile a single rider on the team. And his latest edition is Charles Collet. The 22 year-old is one of France's best up-and-coming street skateboarders. He hails from Grenoble, but now lives in Lyon and has that smooth European street skateboarding stye that we've seen from the likes of his Cliche teammate, Jesus Fernandez. So sit back, pour yourself a glass of Cabernet, grab a baguette, slice some cheese, light a smoke and enjoy French skateboarding at its best: |
