  • About

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) is one of over 40 Olympic sports organizations in America. It is responsible for developing competition programs in skiing and snowboarding including well-managed competitions and professional coaching programs to provide young athletes with an opportunity to reach an Olympic dream. USSA' (s vision and mission is simple:

The Vision of the USSA is to make the United States of America
the best in the world in Olympic skiing and snowboarding.

    About Freestyle
In the early days of freestyle skiing the sport was named for the "free" and creative element introduced by athletes who resisted traditional alpine and nordic skiing. Competitions included an all-in-one-run event where skiers were judged on a run that included ballet, moguls and a spontaneous aerial maneuver. Today the evolution of freestyle skiing is made up of six different disciplines; aerials, halfpipe, moguls, dual moguls, ski cross and slopestyle. Each discipline is judged and scored to their own points list. Freestyle skiing was added to the Olympic program in 1992 for moguls, aerials in 1994, and ski cross will debut in the 2010 Olympic Games.

The Mission of the USSA is to provide strong leadership that establishes and supports
athletic excellence in accordance with USSA core values.

USSA manages its vision and mission through the three ' R' (s' : Rules, Races and Ranking. Rules are established to ensure a consistent and fair playing field for all athletes. Races, or competitions, are the backbone of USSA' (s programs, providing competitive programs for athletes. Ranking is a means of evaluating performance in competitions to determine advancement on USSA' (s Athlete Development Pipeline, or to assist in determining start positions in specific competitions.
