Of course, life is meant to be LIVED!!! But there are things that are acceptable to allow your kids to do, and there are things that are not. Do you understand how long it takes to sail around the world, temoraneous? Do you understand what the oceans are like? Have you really thought about the whole picture here? There are pirates that have heard that she is doing this - and they don't play by the same rules as us. It is WINTER in the Indian Ocean where she is right now. Okay, there are things that are considered calculated risks, and then there are things like this. I don't blame the girl at all - she is doing something that she wants to do (hopefully). But, she is 16, and history has it that teenagers are not capable of making decisions that are necessarily good for them. That's why we have laws in place! I am getting sick of reading comments from people saying that you haven't lived if you don't support this activity!! Come on, people, let's take care of our kids!!!!!!! And enough of the immature, idiotic comments. If you and pookieg24 can't be civil, don't comment. Nobody wants to read that stuff.

So, in answer to your questions, the first one being about the history of teenagers making decisions, I'm not saying that all teenagers make bad decisions. I'm saying that this decision was risky, one that doesn't fit into the "calculated risk" category. There are too many variables that are beyond her control. And while that would be true no matter what age she was, as a young teenage girl, she is prey to some of the pirates wandering the ocean. Also, as a 16 year-old, she cannot make decisions without her parents' consent, and I, myself, wouldn't be able to live with myself if my child died because I allowed something so risky. I understand shooting for ones' goals - when I do something, I put in 100% and shoot for the top, so it's not that I don't support that. But again, one has to consider the whole picture, and figure out just how dangerous the endeavor is. Life is meant to be enjoyed, absolutely! But if this girl's life was cut short because of a decision that she and her parents made, her parents would have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Being a parent really sucks in a lot of ways - it involves so much responsibility! As for your comment about adults making bad decisions, I wholeheartedly agree. But they are adults, and they suffer the consequences of their actions alone. And it is our job to guide children to making good decisions, and think this one wasn't a good one. Winter ocean, pirates, being alone, etc. like I said before. You also said "Does it really even matter?", to how long the trip takes and what the oceans are like. I say definitely that matters! That's part of factoring into a calculated risk. And again, with all of the potential risks, I believe that this was not a calculated risk, it was just too plain risky. I'm all about taking calculated risks - but I do calculate before I do them. And I try to teach this to my children and students - to make good decisions.
