Passenger jet avoids three waterspouts while landing in Sochi; video

Extreme weather turned the skies dark over the Black Sea and the Russian resort town of Sochi on Tuesday in a sight described by Russia Today as "a scene from an Armageddon movie."

Heavy rain, gusty winds and 11 waterspouts over the Black Sea forced nine flights to be cancelled and several others to be diverted to airports in Anapa and Krasnodar at the height of tourist season, according to the Sochi Express.

One passenger jet, however, found a clear route to avoid three waterspouts as those on the ground shot video of the aircraft approaching the town that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. The Daily Mail shared one video:

Kseniya Vasilieva shot a photo of three waterspouts to the left of the aircraft she was in, though it was not confirmed as the same one in the video.

"The sky turned black, some kind of blotchiness appeared," Vasilieva told RT. "We began to look closely because we could not distinguish between anything. At first, we thought that something had happened, then it all began to turn black, and tornadoes began to descend.

"At some point, it seemed to us that something had fallen… in fact, no one reacted on the plane, we just filmed it."

The plane landed safely, as did others that braved the extreme weather.
