Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk suffered one of his biggest slams in years Saturday at the ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney during his Tony Hawk and Friends Skate Jam tour. All was going well early, with Hawk giving fans plenty to cheer about. After he pulled one of his renowned 900s in Spain last week, some thought he might attempt the feat again. But when he failed to stick the landing of a backside 540, and abruptly hit the hardwood, his night was over.
Hawk did his best to shake it off, so as not to alarm the hundreds of kids watching. But while the show went on he was taken to the UC Irvine Trauma Center, where doctors determined he had a "pelvic vertical shear injury." Thanks to those good doctors and some wonderful nursing by his daughter Kadence (pictured above from Hawk's Twitter), it looks like he'll be fine.
Tony's big accomplishment Monday, according to his tweets, was that he was able to get off the couch and stand alone with his crutches. He claims he's taking baby steps towards X-Games 16 this weekend, where he's slated to be in the broadcast booth. Meanwhile, his friends have been teasing him about the injury. Among Hawk's favorite messages was one that said, "You know you're getting old when you break your hip."
"I love that guy...Kinda" Hawk replied.
Here's footage of the incident captured by our GrindTV crew.
