More On The Maloof Controversy

By: Tom Morin

Last Sunday there was a bit of an uproar at the 2010 Maloof Money Cup OC. The unbeatable Chris Cole was supposedly beaten by the kid with dreadlocks as long as his body, Nyjah Huston, but in the end still finished atop the leader board. The dread heads of the skateboard world were beside themselves, booing as loud as they could. How un-rasta of them. Anyway, Cole collected another $100,000 check courtesy of the Maloof brothers, and Nyjah once again went home with second.

If you remember the first Maloof back in 2008, just about the exact same thing happened. The only difference is it was Paul Rodriguez who brought home first place to people asking what about Nyjah? Fast forward two years to this year's Tampa Pro down in Florida and it was Rodriguez once again first and Huston second.

It doesn't end there. Just last month at the X Games it was Ryan Sheckler who finished first, and guess who was runner-up? None other than Nyjah Huston. He's like the Buffalo Bills of skateboarding. In case you don't know, the Bills lost four straight Super Bowls in the 90s.

Do the judges not like dreadlocks? Maybe. Are they racist? Of course not, Rodriguez is Mexican. Do they not know what they're doing? Definitely not. I know Maloof judge Alex Moul personally, and I know he knows more about technical skateboarding than you ever will, just watch the guy skate.

So why is Nyjah Huston the official runner-up of competitive skateboarding? As of right know I don't know, but I will get to the bottom of this, stay tuned. All that I know is I have a new nickname for Nyjah, Jim Kelly. As in the quarterback of the above mention Buffalo Bill.

PS, I'm pretty certain Cole, Rodriguez and Sheckler REALLY ARE THAT GOOD. I personally watched them destroy Rob Dyrdek's top secret Street League training facility at an airplane hanger in an undisclosed location, more on that later.

Transworld Skateboarding caught up with the Skatepark or Tampa's Ryan Clemens, who was the announcer of this year's Maloof for his interpretation Check it out:

i respect shaun white as a snowboarder, but i never rlly liked him as a skater anyway. i just think skaters should stick to skate companies and not corporate phenomenons like target, they have to keep real skating alive. think about it Greg Lutzka ditched Globe shoes for K Swiss shoes, which is not even a skate company at all and now people r mad at him. everyone hates on Ryan Sheckler cuz he has a JC Penny brand. think about it, its just a better idea to stick with skating.

i completely agree with you and i get where you're coming from. i'd love it for these companies to stick with "core" skate companies and not go with the corporate giants. no athlete wants to be considered a sellout either. but i also understand why these guys sign with companies such as target. i mean companies like target are probably paying these guys way more money than the skate companies are. if it's a difference of several hundred thousand dollars or even millions of dollars, then i get it. heck.. i'd do the same. what do you think? do you think it's good or bad for the sport that these big companies are sponsoring skateboarders?

i feel like its bad for skateboarding, cuz skaters r slowly tearing away from core companies, but good and bad for the skaters, good cuz they get payed millions of dollars, bad cuz its a bad look for them to be on corporate giant teams.

That's why they invented the street league. Real Judges that know skill, technique, style, and difficulty. So when this competition goes on, there are no ifs, buts, why, how. Whoever wins deserves the trophy.

I think this was a close match but that clip wasn't even the whole competition. That whole clip was Nyjah Highlights and a little was shown on what Cole was doing the whole competition. I was there and Cole killed it. So did Nyjah. It was basically a coin toss and Cole won it.
