LRG Artist Driven Series| Bangkok

By: Kat Hoffman

Take in the sights and sounds of Thailand with LRG and three of the most influential street artists of the day in their new edit below.

The guys-- Pose, Steel and Vizie-- take inspiration from the culture of Bangkok, realizing that life on the road is not always fun and games, especially when you have a new family waiting for you at home.

Nonetheless they spray paint the town red and have great stories to tell along the way.

Check out part 1 of the mini-documentary of LRG's "Artist Driven Asia Tour":

Stay tuned for part 2, where they take on Hong Kong.

Tony Hawk and Steve Caballero Gather at Vans Pro Tec Pool Party

By: Nate Hoppes

With 17-year-old Pedro Barros turning the highly anticipated bowl contest into a battle for second, the 2012 Vans Pro-Tec Pool Party transformed from a competition into a trip down skateboarding's memory lane.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of his infamous Half Cab shoes, legend Steve Caballero returned from a broken collar bone to win the nostalgic Masters division. Cab sat on top of the podium consisting of fellow Bones Brigade members Tony Hawk and Lance Mountain.

If these guys weren't feeling their age already, after a long day of skating the Vans Bowl in Orange, California, they were quickly reminded when contest organizers presented Hawk with a birthday cake complete with 44 candles.

Check out Skateboarder Magazine's highlight video from the Masters Division:

Penny Skates

By: Janos Palko

Penny Skateboards, a new company out of Australia, has been gaining momentum with their retro replica skates. Modeled after the original 'sidewalk surfer' style of skates from the 50's, which would eventually spawn skateboarding as we know it today, their skates feature bright plastic decks and skinny trucks, along with some modern upgrades.

In this mini-documentary, founder Ben Mackay talks about his upbringing and how Penny Skates came to be:

Tony Hawk Rad Science

By: Kat Hoffman

What does the study of Physics have to do with Tony Hawk? Everything, actually. From the force of gravity and velocity to inertia and balance, all of these factors make his amazing tricks possible.

From May 26 to September 3, Tony Hawk will join forces with science for the
exhibit entitled Tony Hawk | Rad Science at UC Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science museum.
During a special premiere event on June 2 Hawk will be hand to help kick off summer with an exclusive skate demo.

The exhibit will feature more than 20 interactive experiences including everything from Tony's 900 Vert Theater to footage of his first-ever 900. Other exhibits will feature the evolution of the skateboard and a street course on a stationary board that tests your balance with tricks like grinds and manuals.

"Physics relates to everything that we do," said Berkeley physics professor Joel Fajans. "This cool new exhibition shows how a visit to a local skatepark can demonstrate important physics principles."

Tony talks about how math and science have helped him succeed in this video:

Mike Vallely Celebrates 25 Years of Skateboarding and Elephant Launch

By: Nate Hoppes

Celebrating his 25th year as a professional skateboarder Mike Vallely threw an all out party on Catalina Island this past Saturday, launching his own skateboard company.

The notorious bad boy of skateboarding parted ways with long-time partner Powell-Peralta in December to launch Elephant Skateboards. "This brand is not framed by someone else's idea of cool, or what they think skateboarding is from moment to moment. It's a brand that simply represents what I have always represented: 100% skateboarding for love," Vallely stated when he announced he was starting his own brand.

Vallely hooked up with artist Tim Clark to create the look and feel behind the brand as well as the entire first product line. The skateboards feature designs from his past, present, and what he hopes to ride in the future.

Vallely explained the special meaning behind the name of his new brand, stating, "The Elephant symbolizes both love and strength. These qualities feed each other and make for a complete and meaningful life. But also, they represent my approach to skateboarding and how I view skateboarding. Elephant represents my passion for and my approach to skateboarding."

Those lucky enough to escape LA for the day were treated to a mini-ramp jam session during the day and a special musical jam session from Ben Harper in the evening. Here's a photo recap from Saturday:
Not a bad turn out considering the jam session was on Catalina Island.
