Skateboarding Rallies To Help An Injured Legend

By: Tom Morin

Jim Muir was one of the original Dogtown warlords of the 70s founding Dogtown skateboards when he was just 18. He along with Jay Adams, Tony Alva, Stacey Peraltra, etc. changed skateboarding. They, combined with some new advances in skateboard technology like urethane wheels, took skateboarding to new places. Instead of skating like ballerinas in freestyle, and zigzagging around cones like slalom skiers, they brought skateboarding to vertical heights on quarter pipes and in pools.

Since then Muir has continued to head up the program at Dogtown skates, which he still owns to this day. Unfortunately, the skateboard legend's life took a turn for the worst last March when he was paralyzed while surfing Westwards Beach. He hit his head on the bottom and instantly lost the movement of his limbs.

After his accident he underwent emergency surgery, which was followed by acute rehab. Over the past year Muir has been working hard to regain movement in his limbs in an extensive physical therapy program. These programs are expensive, and we're in the midst of a recession.

Since skateboarding never turns it's back on one of it own, there will be a benefit tonight at Air Condtioned Supper Club in Venice Beach, CA. The Duane Peters Gunfight will perform along with Ray Barbee and P.F.L, and there will be an skateboard art auction as well.

Street League 2012: Nyjah Huston Wins Kansas City... Again

Street League's instant scoring allowed for the possibility of pressure-packed moments, but very few times did the skateboarders deliver

The 2012 Street League season kicked off in Kansas City this past weekend as it did last year-- with skateboard technician Nyjah Huston taking home $150,000. Huston's ability to land difficult and technical tricks consistently makes him almost unbeatable in the current Street League format.

"It was a hard one tonight, that's for sure!" said Nyjah. "I definitely had to work for it. I love the challenge, though, and to skate with these guys is great."

here's a blast from the past. my name is robin alaway lerum. i skated with y'all during the dogtown heyday. also, i went to your senior prom with you . . . with a compound fractured arm and broken shoulder cast. i'm sick to hear what you're going through. five years ago i crushed my spine at cloudbreak and then again in a 3 big rig freeway accident. i am titanium from my neck to my pelvis and missing a few ribs. my medical tab is somewhere near the three million mark. i am sooooo sorry for your condition. i know how bad it hurts.
prayers and hugs,
robin alaway lerum
p.s. can you believe ryan sheckler is my nephew ??? must be in the genes :)
