R.A.T. Tour Stop #2

2011 Scion RAT Tour Stop #2 – OKC Recap Press Release
April 19th, 2011 – OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – . Last summer when the Scion RAT Skate Tour hit OKC we had a great time, but it was June 19th and blazing hot…100+ degrees. This time we took a chance with an April date but luckily we nailed it. It’s tornado season and the winds where howling on Friday and again on Sunday…but Saturday we got sunny sky’s a slight breeze and temps in the low 70’s for our event – WINNING!

Once again, the competition took place at the Mat Hoffman Skate Park just south of downtown. Sixty plus regional shredders showed up ready to throw-down and grab their share of over $2500 in cash/prizes. In addition to the Oklahoma crew, we had riders from Texas, Kansas and Missouri for stop #2.

The street qualifying kicked off around 12:30p and forty riders were split into 6 heats. The top two in each heat would advance to the semi-final round. The riders that would advance included Pat Donivan, David Sauceda, Dakota Camp, Taylor Nida, Josh Love, Daniel Yeager, Ryan Mabrey, Cory Shirly, Isaiah Hightower, Vinny Bahn, Taylor Jett, Ryan Strader, Jimmy Young and Rocky Sheaffer.
After street qualifying, focus shifted to the huge bowl at the Mat Hoffman park. Twenty-four riders where split into four heats and again, the top two would advance. Oklahoma has an eclectic group of transition skaters and they came in all shapes and sizes from 8-year old Evan Doherty who traveled all the way from Greenwood, Missouri to the hometown “Bowl Burners” crew anchored by 47 year old Carl “Gnarl” Conner. Each rider took a one-minute solo run and then each heat had a 5-minute snake jam session. Young Evan Doherty was joined by Greg Diaz, Pat Donivan, Gary Morris, Shane Fruits, Dalton Parks, Josh Love, Chad Pollock, Dakota Camp and Eduardo Ochoa who would all advance to the finals.

Once the roster was set for the bowl finals the crowd shifted back to the street course for the semi-finals which featured two heats of seven riders and the top three in each would move on to a six-man final where everyone would get paid. RAT newcomers Pat Donivan and Vinny Banh joined Ryan Strader advancing from heat #1 of the semi’s and Josh Love, Rocky Shaeffer and RAT stop #1 street winner, Taylor Jett from Houston, TX advanced from the second heat.

The bowl finals kicked off around 3:30pm and the competitors were ready to fight for the podium. Once again riders each got a one-minute solo run followed by a more organized 5-minute jam. Everyone killed it in the final heat and the crowd that lined the bowl to watch were treated to some fast-paced, high-flying action. When the final whistle sounded it was local phenom, Gary Morris, who put together the best run and backed up his 2nd place finish at RAT #1 in Dallas with a 1st place finish, adding to his series point totals for the 2011 RAT Bowl Championship. 2nd place went to Pat Donivan from Kansas City. The youngest competitor of the day, Evan Doherty took 3rd, followed by Chad Pollock, Eduardo Ochoa and 35-year old “Bowl Burner” Shane Fruits rounded out the top 6. The top three received RAT Trophy “Check Decks” courtesy of Sk8te Skins and all-of-the top 6 received cash and various prize packs featuring product from Monster Energy, Skullcandy, Spy Optic and Theeve.
When the bowl finals wrapped it was time for a final 5-minute battle royale on the street course. Out of the forty skaters who started the day…the finals would feature the top six. Most of the action in the street finals took place around the steep eight-stair set that featured giant hubba ledges on each side and a flat rail running down the middle. The course was tight and the judges would have their work cut-out for them because nobody was holding back! Taylor Jett was a machine banging out trick-after-trick…fs lip, fs feeble, big spin backboard, hard flip, nollie front board, hardflip back tail and more. Jett backed up his win in Dallas with another 1st place finish. Multi-talented Pat Donivan who just finished in 2nd place in the bowl competition minutes earlier would add to his day’s winnings with another 2nd place finish. He ripped all day and in the street finals he kept it going with a solid line-up of hammers including bs 180 on to the rail, front smith 180 out, caveman, ollie north over crook and more. Ryan Strader’s consistent slaying landed him in 3rd place followed by the eternally happy Josh Love, Vinny Banh and Rocky Shaeffer. Trophy “Check Decks” went to the top 3 and everyone received additional cash and prizes for their efforts. Vinny Banh also picked up a sweet new bench rail from Element Drop Spot for stomping the rail trick of the day.
In addition to the skate competition, spectators and participants watched live art created on-site by local artists in the Sector 9 Inspiration Station, listened to music from the Skullcandy DJ “2Loose”, enjoyed free drinks and swag from the Monster Energy Team and had tons of chances to win great prizes from local skate shops and series sponsors.
“We always get a warm welcome from our Oklahomies in OKC,” said RAT Tour organizer Bill Geiger, “The skating is on point and the crowd always has a great time. It’s a fun event.”
