SASS Session 3: Action in Argentina

By: Heather Hendricks

While many people in the Northern Hemisphere anxiously await the first frost and flakes of winter, the Patagonia region in Argentina has been getting dumped on for days. So much snow has fallen on the local mountain, Cerro Catedral that much of the terrain remains closed to prevent major avalanches and slides. Seems crazy to actually want the snow to stop, but as the accumulation nears 2 meters in just two days, pros and clients at South America Snow Sessions hope for a reprieve and the chance to drop into some of the deepest lines of their lives.

Session 3 at SASS is in full effect and GrindTV is stoked to be onsite in Bariloche, Argentina to experience all of the action first hand. If there ever was a time to be in Southern Hemisphere to ski and snowboard, now is that time. World renowned pros and guides are all here working on different projects, but the common connection is the internal desire to shred massive amounts of pow.

There's so much going on down here, with new things popping up everyday, that we wanted to give you a little taste of all the "epiciness" that's already unraveled.

Members of the Burton International Team, Jussi Oksanen, Jeremy Jones and Mikey Renz were onsite and were busy exploring the terrain of Cerro Catedral. They focused on shooting epic action and artistic lifestyles for upcoming Burton catalogs. With Blotto onsite you know the team crushed it, found the goods and got the shots.

The Burton team had a productive trip and are excited to be apart of the SASS family. Their first Argentine adventure may have ended, but with conditions this epic, you know they'll be back.

Also in the mix are members of One Life Crew. Chanelle Sladics, Jamie Anderson and Kjersti Buuas are all at the SASS compound and have been busy filming and working on environmental projects. The Crew has teamed up with SASS and are building greenhouses out of recycled plastic bottles. The greenhouses are being used to enhance the awareness of food sources and to help promote recycling within the community. These eco-friendly buildings will be donated local schools once completed. This has been a huge project for SASS and the One Life Crew and lots of hours were spent gathering the materials and constructing the houses.323398_m634.jpg

Pro Skier and SASS coach Michelle Parker has been very instrumental in the entire process of building the greenhouses.

Methods of recycling haven't really been introduced to locals of Bariloche, so this project has helped create a general awareness of their importance. In order to gather enough plastic bottles for the buildings, lots of bags of trash had to be picked through. One Life media man, Casey Cochran did a bunch of the dirty work, and was happy to help dig through trash for plastic bottles.

These projects have been a major part of Session 3 and to celebrate the hard work of everyone involved, the One Life Crew put together an amazing concert featuring Cindy Santini and Marc B. These musicians hail from Southern California and were excited to share their talents with the SASS family.

The show was held at Mute which is "RestoBar" at the base of Cerro Catedral. Cindy and Marc B played to a crowd of locals, SASS clients and pros alike. Everyone was super stoked and grooved to the music while it pounded snow outside. Members of the Roxy snowboard team, including Olympic gold medalist Torah Bright, made the 30 hour trek to Bariloche and arrived just in time for the concert.

The Roxy team is just getting settled into their new SASS abode and will be busy shooting for upcoming catalogs. We'll be catching up with Torah Bright for an exclusive interview so be on the lookout for that.

Members of the Dakine team just rolled into town and once their bags make it as far as they did, they'll be neck deep and slaying pow. Check back for features with Shayne Pospisil, Austin Smith, and Bryan Fox.

That's just a little nibble of everything going here at SASS. We'll be posting often and keeping you in the loop with all the amazing action popping off in Bariloche, Argentina. Stay tuned...
