Luke Mitrani and Kelly Clark win superpipe finals at Winter Dew Tour Championships

By: Heather Hendricks

The culmination of the Winter Dew Tour series went down today as men's and women's superpipe championships went off at Snowbasin Resort in Ogden, Utah.

The coveted Dew Cup was on the line tonight, making the event action packed with incredible riding on both sides of the field. All of the shreds were ready to compete and the record breaking crowd comprised of Utah's finest were stoked for the show.

The women were the first to set it off in the superpipe with six of the world's greatest laying it on the line. After qualifying first in yesterday's prelims, it was pretty clear that Kelly Clark was determined to do well. Clark has won five contests in five weeks, making tonight her sixth consecutive win. The Vermont native is currently unstoppable because she's known as the only women who can consistently throw a 1080 in competition. In her winning run, Clark whipped out a front 7, cab 7, a huge frontside 1080, cab 3, front 5 and a back 5 earning a 95.75. This score was a solid 4 points higher than any of the other girls, securing Clark's second Dew Cup.

Clark said this about today's performance, "I'm really happy with my riding today and it's even better to walk away with the win and the Dew Cup," said Clark. "It's been an amazing season and I didn't think I could recover after Breckenridge when I finished in sixth place, but to come back and win the next two and walk away with the Cup is just incredible."

Rounding out the podium was Kaitlyn Farrington and Japan's Soka Yamoka. These girls were charging and put on a great show for the expansive Utah crowd.

With the fate of the girls sealed, it was time for the eleven dudes to suit up and get after it in the superpipe. The drama for the day was whether or not Louie Vito could continue his winning streak, or at least place high enough to win the Dew Cup.

Vito's first run was a little shaky and he wiped out on his second double cork, which made him look to his second run to secure the Cup. The 'Tiny Dancer' was able to keep it together and scored a 73.50 in his second run, which was placed him in seventh. This position was just enough to seal the deal for Vito to win the coveted Cup.

'Lou-dog' had this to say about the contest, "I'm bummed I didn't make the podium, and I wasn't completely satisfied with my riding tonight. The level of riding was sick though, and in the end I'm stoked I got the Dew Cup."

It may not have been Vito's night, but it was definitely Luke Mitrani's time to shine. The twenty year old ripper has been killing it as of late, but hasn't been able to podium at any major contests. That all changed tonight as Luke laid down a super sick run that consisted of a huge double michal chuck, frontside 9, backside 5, front 10 and a cab double 10. This impressive run had the crowd oohing and awing and the judges were equally impressed and awarded 'Squid' the highest score in Dew history, a whopping 97.0.

Mitrani said this about today, "It was a great contest, the last stop of the Dew Tour, and the crowd was amazing. A really good energy," said Mitrani. "I can't believe I won. I've never won a contest this big so I'm really tripping."

Greg Bretz and Steve Fisher were also tripping on how well they did, and were stoked on their second and third place finishes.

The Winter Dew Tour may be a wrap on this year, but it will be back in full force next year, so look forward to that.

Congrats to all the competitors!

A video of the 18-year-old hitting a massive kicker in Europe just surfaced, and in it, Sandbech stomps a triple underflip 1260. Yeah, we didn't really think that was possible either, but this video from Stale's sponsors proves it.
