29th Burton US Open Halfpipe Finals

By: Heather Hendricks

The culmination of the 2011 Open Series and TTR events was witnessed today in Stratton Mountain, Vermont at the 29th Burton US Open. Thousands of spectators both young and old flocked to the Sunbowl at Stratton for the historic event.

Halfpipe finals were held today for the men and women marking the last contest of the ten-month long series.

Big bucks were on the line as the US Open Halfpipe Title, the overall TTR Title, and the Burton Global Open Series title were all awarded today. The long season of over 400 events came to a close and $600,000 was doled out to the winners in a matter of mere minutes.

With so much hype and history surrounding the US Open, the halfpipe finalists took to the pipe determined to ride their best and put on a great show for the expansive crowd.

Kicking things off were the women whose field was stacked with the heaviest riders in the game. Vermont native, Kelly Clark took her fifth US Open title and first Burton Open Series title with her win today. Kelly is the only lady to have a 1080 in her bag of tricks, which has helped the 27-year old to win contest after contest this season.

Kelly won today's event with her first run score of 91.05. No one could touch this score, and Kelly spent the day one-uping herself with her remaining runs. On her third run, with the title already secured, Clark sent a massive 1080, stomping it to her feet, proving that she is the best halfpipe rider in the world and will continue to dominate until someone else steps up to her game.

Clark was pumped and said, "It's been an incredible season. Not only am I happy with the level of my riding, I've also had more fun than ever, and my results speak for that. The Open is one of my favorite events, and I feel privileged to have the most halfpipe wins on record. It's also huge for me to win the Burton Global Open Series title because it's the one award that's been elusive for me, so I'm super happy to walk away with it."

Rounding out the top three for the ladies was fellow Vermonter, Hannah Teter and Gretchen Bleiler who snapped up third.

After a brief break for pipe maintenance, the guys geared up for their chance at US Open glory. The field was highly international with only three Americas competing in finals.

Reigning US Open halfpipe champion Kazuhiro Kokubo claimed the title again this year with a run that consisted of a super smooth frontside alley oop nosebone, frontside 900 melon grab, Michaelchuck nose grab, frontside double cork 1080 and a Cab 1080 melon grab.

Throughout the season, Kazu's runs have been scored inconsistently by the judges, but today the panel of five were spot on and scored Japanese ripper 90.1. Kazu enjoyed a victory lap for his last run, in which he rode straight down the middle as a prayer for his tsunami-riddled homeland.

After his win, Kazu said "I'm so stoked and so happy. I want to say thanks to my sponsors, family and friends, and I hope my win brings a little joy and happiness to Japan."

Iouri Podladdtchikov, known as IPod, took second place with a run that was filled with double corks and cripplers. Japanese young gun Kohei Kudo's huge hits and smooth style helped him lock in third.

Following the contest a massive awards ceremony was held for all of the winners. Bottle after bottle of champagne was sprayed by the champions as a ode to ending of the TTR and Open season.

Following the champagne spew session, Swedish rock band, The Sounds hit the stage and erupted into an fiery rock and roll show that was simply badass.

The band had the eclectic crowd fist pumping and jumping to their electric hot beats and cut throat lyrics.

The raging rock show made a historic end the 29th US Open in Stratton, Vermont.
