Men's Superpipe Finals: Euro X Games

By: Heather Hendricks

Men's superpipe finals went down tonight as the grand finale of three days of intense shred action amidst the breathtaking French Alps for second annual Euro X Games in Tignes, France.

As the sun set behind the mountains, turbo-powered X-Games lights illuminated the pristine 22' superpipe. The walls of the pipe were soft yet solid, creating perfect conditions for the eight finalists to slay.

The French announcer hyped up the swelling crowd by bellowing "Tigity, Tigity, Tiiiiiiiiingnes" which was the international call to start the event. With the crowd pumped up and fueled on baguettes and beer, it was time for the big show to start.

The first runs were a bit shaky as everyone except Iouri Podladtchikov failed to put down a clean run. Ipod pulled into first with a score of 85.66 which held up until Louie Vito dropped in for his second run.

Vito came screaming into the pipe with tons of speed and boosted a winning run that went like this: front double cork 10, crippler, michealchuck, front double cork 10, cab double 10, front 10.

This dizzying run was super smooth and had more height than what we normally see out of Vito. To this, the French announcer exclaimed, "boooosh, booooosh, booooooooosssh" which excited the mixed crowd of party-ers and parents.

As an answer to this huge run, IPod dropped into the pipe and pulled out his versions of double corks earning himself second place. His run consisted of a cab double 10, crippler, backside double cork 12, front double cork, and a switch air to fakie. This scored a 91.33 which was enough for a shiny silver medal and bragging rights for days. IPod's double cork 10s have a very similar look the ones Shaun White pioneered two seasons ago. They're fierce.

Rounding out the podium was young gun Christian Haller. The soft-spoken shredder nabbed third place with his third run that went front 10, cab 10, font 9, back 5, front 10. He scored a 82.33 for his efforts and claimed his first major podium finish of the season.

The rest of the riders were going huge, but just couldn't land a clean run. Nike's Mason Aguirre was easily going the biggest of the night, but had trouble landing his backside 10s. Jack Mitrani looked like he was well on his way to the podium in his third run, but caught the deck on his last hit which sent him bobbling to the bottom.

While many of the riders didn't land their desired runs, everyone is sure to send it tonight as a farewell to France and the second Euro X Games. It's time to indulge in the bourgeois scene, maybe eat some baguettes, and definitely take Vito up on that 10% rule.

Avoir!

While many of us were sulking because the season is practically over, Norwegian shredder, Stale Sandbech was busy stomping a brand new trick. A video of the 18-year-old hitting a massive kicker in Europe just surfaced, and in it, Sandbech stomps a triple underflip 1260. Yeah, we didn't really think that was possible either, but this video from Stale's sponsors proves it.

After seeing the video, we had to know what was going through Sandbech's mind when he stomped the new trick...
