Competitors were greeted with dark skies, zero visibility, and massive flakes unloading onto the slopestyle course and halfpipe on Thursday with no signs of quitting. The weather was damn hairy however, it provided mind blowing snow and tree runs. If the riders were bummed about the contest being held off, no one noticed between the yips of joy coming out of the powder covered trees.
The halfpipe competition did get a moment of sunshine on Friday so the miracle workers over at Roxy pulled it together so that the spectators could enjoy some old-fashioned spring halfpipe runs. Most of the heavy hitters sat the competition out to let the younger riders have their moment in the spotlight - a pretty different vibe from past years of the event. Kelly Marren from Hillsborough, CA claimed the $15,000 prize purse. Leslie Glenn from Breckenridge nabbed second place while 10-year-old wonder child Chloe Kim rounded out the podium.
It was only expected when Saturday rolled around that the slopestyle contest was going to be cancelled. 50 mile-per-hour winds and white out conditions are not on the ideal checklist for sending it off jumps and riding into massive jibs. In light of the contest pretty much going to hell, all the riders got to experience some seriously amazing powder runs and be at Mammoth while it broke its snowfall records without batting an eye.

To take advantage of all the talent gathered in one place with as much snow as there was - Roxy turned the slopestyle competition into a team filming competition. They split the girls up into groups of three, threw a GoPro camera at them, and told them to get the best air, line, and jib. The results of this impromptu blizzard video contest will be released April 11th and should definitely prove to be interesting and more than likely, entertaining.
Once everyone found their way off the mountain on Saturday it was time to let loose and rock out to La Roux. The show got moved inside of Canyon Lodge so that there wasn't a massive breakout of frostbite and the possibility of killing off a major band in a snow storm was off the table. The lodge was wall-to-wall with snow and rock fiends, mostly 18-year-olds, though that didn't stop everyone from dancing their asses off. Once La Roux closed the house down the masses dispersed into the puking snow and strong winds and took over the Village bars.
Although this event wasn't quite what everyone was used to, it was apparent that all the riders involved still had an awesome and memorable time. Kudos to Roxy and Mammoth for sticking out the storm and rolling with the punches - can't wait to see what next year turns out like. Until then, let's keep that snow coming!
