Shaun White unveils new line of Target housewares

By: Heather Hendricks

Still trying to find those last minute holiday gifts? Of course you are. You still have four days until the 25th, and being as most snowboarders and skiers are of the procrastinating type, we know you're still scouring the mall for that perfect purchase. Since you haven't found it yet, don't fret, Shaun White has come to your rescue once again. This time by unveiling his new line of Target housewares.

Yep, no need to choke on your sugary piece of Stride Whitemint gum, you read that right. The Flying Tomato, has taken on a new creative endeavor, and this time it's all about home accessories. The Shaun White home collection is a breakout line of bedding, lighting and housewares that are inspired by skating, snowboarding, music and art.

The New York Times was was the first to get the scoop on this exciting new line and sat down with Mr. White to get all the dirty details about what to expect. Apparently the line will feature piggy banks, lamps and sets of reversible sheets.

Might as well peel on over to Target right now, because that's what everyone needs this holiday season; a set of Shaun White reversible sheets. Sold.

Head to here to check out the New York Time's story about the burgeoning line. And if you're into controversy, scoot over to Vice for this particularly interesting blog about the SW for Target designs and their (possible) origins.

Nike Chosen: Checking in with 4Reel Media

By: Heather Hendricks

The rankings in the Nike Chosen Contest are changing everyday, and recently a crew based out of Breckenridge, Colorado has swooped in, generating the biggest social buzz yet. The 4Reel Media Crew has been gaining momentum since they joined the contest a mere two weeks ago. We sat down with the Colorado locals to get a feel for who they are, what they hope to accomplish with the Chosen contest, and how the heck they've managed to get so much hype.

Check 'em out.

4Reel Media Crew Description:
We're a group of guys from Colorado looking to make an impact in the snow sports industry. This year we plan on BIG backcountry jumps, steep and deep pow lines and so much fun that Jay-Z hits us up........on the reg.

Style: Park, Urban, Backcountry
Buzz: 2425 Likes, 353 Comments

Whose in the crew?
Jacob Carey, Nick Larson, Colin Spencer, Cameron Payne

Tell us about your crew:
Homegrown in Colorado, been riding and filming together since we were knee high to a grasshopper. -Cam

How old is everyone, how long have you been snowboarding?
Jacob: age: 23 Years snowboarding:18
Nick: age: 22 Years snowboarding: 20
Colin: age:23 Years snowboarding: 20
Cam: age: 23 Years skiing: 21 Years filming/editing: 6

How did you come up with your crew's name: 4Reel Media
We really wanted to have something catchy that also played the "media" theme through it, hence "REEL" and along with that how many times do you hear someone say "yea for real" its catchy and rolls off the tongue nicely. -Cam

How long have you been a crew and how did the crew form?
Its hard to limit a "crew" to 4 people, Colin, Cameron and fellow camera man Kyle Foster started the group back in the summer of 2007, we were all into filming, shredding and having a good time. We really wanted to just make edits for our friends to enjoy, then more and more people started to follow us and now I can't believe what it has turned into. We now have about 8 of us in total, skiers and snowboarders. -Cam

What are you looking to get out of the Chosen Contest?
We are looking for the chance to show the industry that a grass root crew can hold their own in the backcountry with what we have. If Nike were to choose us, there is no doubt in my mind that we will change the industry. -Cam

Do you have any strategies for filming?
I think our strategy is to focus on the big jumps, but I don't want to give up all my surprises. -Cam

What is your favorite part about snowboarding?
The fun, freedom and personal expression, pow in and around my face. -Nick/Jacob

What is your favorite snowboard film, any that you are hoping to fashion your edits after?
Cub - "The Big Blind"
Nick - MacDawg, Absinthe Films get it done
Colin - "Out Cold"
Cam - "One Love"
I like to see what all these companies have to offer, but lately is seems to just be snow porn, same thing over and over, I want to change that game and create my own unique product.
-Cam

If Chosen, what do will your crew do to celebrate?
Oh man thats a hard one, but first off we were thinking a 4REEL surf trip to Tres Olas Surf Camp in Dominical, Costa Rica. I'm sure there would be a little bit of partying going on as well. -Cam

What pro (or pros) would you most like to live like?
Nicholas Mueller, Jake Blauvelt, DCP,

Describe a perfect day with your crew.
Everyone on their own sled, bluebird, deep pow.

Anything else you want to say about your crew?
Nike, Be prepared, be scared, we are coming for you.

Head to the Nike Chosen page to "Like" the 4Reel Media Crew, or give them a run for their money and sign your own snowboard crew up.

You have until Feb. 15th to get your crew buzzing. Just do it.

So-Gnar Mighty Midwest Tour & Shred Circuit Contest Series - Stop # 2, Buck Hill Ski Area

By: Heather Hendricks

Words: So-Gnar

Stop #2 of the So-Gnar Mighty Midwest Tour at Buck Hill started Saturday, December 17th. The temps were warm, the campers were stoked, and the park set up was insane thanks to the So-Gnar crew, Jason and his park crew who were building it until 4a.m the night before.

First, the campers met inside the lodge to get a quick run-down of the camp and to meet up with their coaches. After that everyone rushed to the hill and were strapped in within seconds. The various groups took only a couple of warm up laps before heading to our irresistible private setup.

After getting used to the setup and slowly starting to throw down and learn new tricks, it was time for the campers to refuel with the help of Evol Burritos. Lunch time allowed campers to talk about their day so far with others and relax their muscles they've been working so hard. After lunch and a couple of Red Bulls, the campers were anxious to get back out to our course. The rest of the day was spent in our private course aside from maybe a couple of rope/lift laps. The campers were used to the course by now and were learning new tricks along with throwing down hammers that no one even knew they could do.

By the end of day 1, campers were exhausted from hiking all day but somehow still found energy to compete in the So-Gnar Shred Circuit Contest Series later that night. Luckily, they had a couple hours in-between to relax, eat, maybe even take a nap. ----

The morning of day 2 you could see that everyone was tired from day 1 but were surprisingly stoked for another day of shredding. All the campers headed straight to the So-Gnar park after a warm up run because they couldn't get enough of it the day before.

Now being very familiar to the setup, campers focused more on learning bigger tricks and throwing in some style. The day wasn't even half over and campers were progressing at an incredible rate. Around noon the campers went in for another Evol Burrito lunch that was much needed to gain energy for the traditional progression session.

After lunch the campers had another hour or so to do whatever they'd like before the progression session started. At around 1p.m, the progression session started and let me tell you campers really did progress.

Kids just started throwing down hammers left and right out of nowhere! Some of these were even first or second try! Every camper had a smile on his face and were loving the media attention. Although the progression session ended at 3, it was difficult to get campers inside because too much fun was being had.

We finally gathered the campers inside and spent a couple minutes figuring out awards for all of the kids. Anxiously awaiting, the campers were stoked to see Pat, Aaron, and Austin walk inside with the list of awards. Every camper got an award as a gift for joining camp thanks to all of our awesome sponsors.

We hope every camper had as much fun this year as we all did. You all made the Buck HIll stop such an amazing time and memories were made!

Coaches for stop 2 at Buck HIll included: Pat Milbery, Aaron Ezman, Austin Ezman, Jonas Michilot, Jordan Michilot, Josh Tranby, Louie Arrigoni, Alex Miller, Casey Rodriguez and Joe Mertes.

Spot Check with Thirty Two: Brighton Mountain

By: Lindsay Fraka

Never been to Utah? That's cool. Thirty Two has got you covered with their Spot Check web series where they cruise to resorts all over the world, ride, and document it so we can continue being our lazy selves and live vicariously through them.

This week their crew invaded Brighton, a hop, skip, and a jump from Park City, and shredded their way through their park. Parker Worthen, Brandon Phillips, Johnny Brady, Johnny Miller, Nicholas Justet and Brandon Hobush make up the mob taking hot laps in the edit.

Looks pretty fun, I almost feel like I'm there. I guess I should consider getting off this couch and actually checking it out myself.

In Your Face: Torstein Horgmo challenges Jossi Wells

By: Lindsay Fraka

Spraying anyone in the face is funny. Well, it's actually hilarious. Anyone facing uphill is fair game. Now, when this someone is a skier...it's pretty much a double whammy. This is where pro rider Torstein Horgmo and his acclaimed game of "In Your Face" come into play.

Torstein has made himself famous with his "In Your Face" edits where he challenges friends and riders to a trick-off if you will, and whoever loses gets a gigantic slash directly to his dome - goggles off, no blocking allowed. In the latest duel, Torstein has challenged kiwi and legendary two-planker Jossi Wells - the first skier ever to participate in "In Your Face" with Horgmo.

Watch as they attempt to come up with tricks that the other can understand and watch Horgmo's mind get blown with ski terms and tricks that they can actually pull off. Yes, skiers can go backside and usually they prefer the term "backwards" instead of "ass-first". Thanks Torstein, bridging the gap between skiers and snowboarders one challenge at a time.

See who ends up with a slash of snow blasted to their face below:
