Oslo 2012: World Snowboarding Championships Begin This Week

By: Lindsay Fraka

The best 240 snowboarders from approximately 30 nations have traveled to Oslo, Norway for the World Snowboarding Championships. This week, February 10-19, they'll partake in one of the most highly respected contests in freestyle snowboarding, which takes place just once every four years. Surrounded by fellow riders, friends, and peers, these talented athletes will compete for the acclaimed title of world champion. Male and female winners will be named in the halfpipe and slopestyle competitions. And the last weekend will feature a massive quarterpipe event in the legendary Holmenkollen ski jumping arena.

"By and for snowboarders" is the common theme surrounding the event, since it was founded by Ticket to Ride (TTR) and the World Snowboard Federation. This aspect garners admiration for the event among the snowboard community, given that many contests aren't carried out the way that the majority of riders would prefer.

"The title of it isn't as important as, I think, the fact of something big happening," says Russian-born rider Iouri Podladtchikov, one of the top halfpipe riders on the scene today.

Half a million dollars in prize money might also be a tad important. But more than anything, the athletes are pumped to be riding a world-class setup against the best snowboarders in the world.

Louie Vito also shared his thoughts on the event, "I'm stoked that someone really stepped up to make a more official World Championship. I mean, you have different titles you can win throughout the year and there are other world champs, but it's really rare to find everyone at one place."

With the support of top riders and snowboard federations, the WSC serves as a great display of what snowboarding is and will be in the future.

Qualifying rounds start today, Tuesday, Febuary 14. Stay tuned to GrindTV for results and recaps.

The Chosen Tour: Mt. Seymour

By: Heather Hendricks

The sixth stop of the The Chosen Tour rolled through Mt. Seymour, just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia on Saturday. The second-to-last event of the Tour was action-packed, with many amateur snowboarders throwing down on the progressive course.

Ryan Paterson, a member of the Seymour Crew, competing in the Nike Chosen Crew Video Contest, gave us the inside scoop on what went down at the contest.

Here's what he had to say:

What was the set up of Nike Chosen Tour stop at Mt. Seymour?
The setup was awesome, super original and super fun with good flow.

What were your crew's feelings about going to the contest?
I think we were all just really stoked to be part of a contest like this because of how unique it is. The atmosphere was sick and we all had a really good time boarding with everybody up there.

What was the best trick you or someone from your crew threw during the contest?
That's hard to say. There were a lot of tricks going down. I think Quinn, who's the twelve-year-old in our crew hitting the jump was one of the best parts. It's great watching somebody that small fly through the air. It definitely got everybody fired up.

What has it been like to be a part of the Nike Chosen Crew Video Contest?
It was an unreal experience being a part of the Nike Chosen Tour. It was something new for sure, and getting to ride and film with some of the guys from Nike was really fun. The rail jam at the end of the week just topped the whole experience off. Thanks Nike!

Who won the Seymour stop of the Chosen Tour?
Cody Wilson from Whistler. He was killing it all night and definitely deserved to win that cash. Props Cody!

How many spectators would you say there were?
The rain probably kept a few spectators from showing up, but all the homies not riding in the contest came out to support. They were getting loud for everything from big tricks to big slams and they made the boarding that much more fun.

What was your favorite part of the contest?
My favorite part of the rail jam was getting to ride the set up with all my buddies that were up there. You can't beat riding with your friends and the unique atmosphere. All the crazy lights and music made it even more fun.

Rome Snowboards Exclusive: The Am Team and Van Life

By: Lindsay Fraka

If there's one thing that undoubtedly coincides with the life of a snowboarder, it's road trips. Road trips, smelly vehicles, and a severe lack of hygiene. Rome Snowboards affirmed this with a short edit of their Am Army traveling by van to various mountains, cities, and street spots last winter to shoot urban riding.

What can one gather from watching this video? For one, Rome's amateur team can get down on a snowboard and stomp super technical tricks with style. They also have a knack for cramming a large group of young guys in vans and hotel rooms. This team is certainly a force to be reckoned with in the seasons to come.
