Nike Chosen '11-'12 Tour: Heavenly recap

By: Heather Hendricks

The Nike Chosen Tour has been cruising around the states making pit-stops in some of the countries best shred locations. The most recent tour stop was at Heavenly in Lake Tahoe, California. We caught up with female winner Joanna Dzierzawski from the Tahoe Chosen Crew for her take on the progressive contest.

Take a look at what she had to say.

What was the set-up of the Nike Chosen Tour in Heavenly like?
The Heavenly Nike Chosen stop had a really creative set up that consisted of a massive 70' cut-out jump with a quarter-pipe, wall ride or rail to wall ride close out feature in between the jump and a fun box combo and a down rail w/stairs on the side of the landing. There were lots of options and the set-up was perfect.

Did everyone in your Nike Chosen Crew compete?
Our whole Tahoe Chosen crew did compete - Scottie Hoffman, Nick Geisen, & myself! John Chavallier, our filmer also did his thing.

What were your crew's feelings going to the Rail Jam?
I think I can speak for all of us when I say it was epic! The features were set up perfect, really safe, fun. SPT, Heavenly Park Crew, & Nike did a great job designing and building the features.

What was the best trick you or someone from your crew threw during the contest?
I think Nick Geisen threw a flawless double cork 10.

What was it like to be apart of this Nike Chosen Tour stop?
I was really amped to be apart of this event! I mean the set up had so many options and they were all super fun!

Who won the event?
Nick Poohachoff won for the men and I'm stoked to say that I won for the ladies.

What was the spectator scene like?
Looking out into the crowd was awesome. The street next to the run was absolutely full and so was the run and bleachers below. It was just what we needed to put out a good vibe!

What was your favorite part of the course?
The jump was definitely my favorite but I enjoyed riding all of it! It was really awesome being apart of the Nike Chosen Tour, and I'm stoked for the video contest. Like Tahoe Chosen here.

Stay tuned for a video from the progressive and fun event.

Red Bull Supernatural: Rice is still on a roll

By: Heather Hendricks

The world's best riders battled it out and pushed the progression of snowboarding this week in Nelson, B.C during the Red Bull Supernatural.

Out of a field of 18, Travis Rice came out on top proving he is the best all around snowboarder on the planet. Read on for an in- depth view of the contest from Snowboarder Mag's Editor- in-Chief.

Words: Pat Bridges

There are those rare tipping points that only come along so often where everyone realizes that the game has changed. In snowboarding, Ingemar Beckman's Richter Riksgransen method, Johan's TB5 part, and America's sweep of the Olympic podium in Salt Lake City are but a few of these watershed moments. In a seven day period that saw the legitimate debut of a triple cork in competition and the first five-peat in the X Games halfpipe, undoubtedly the most crucial occurrence for real riders took place in the high alpine above a subdued town in the interior of British Columbia.

The 2012 Red Bull Supernatural was spawned from the multi-talented mind of two-time X Games gold medalist and current SNOWBOARDER and Transworld Rider Of The Year Travis Rice. Building upon Travis's endeavor to bring freeriding to the forefront that began with The Natural Selection and continued to the next level with The Art Of Flight media blitz, Supernatural is a one of a kind event two years in the making. With Supernatural, Rice intends to bring a new side of snowboarding, the world of film and freeriding, to the masses. With the involvement of Red Bull and NBC, the inaugural Supernatural is poised to become the ultimate counterpoint to one-sided saccharine snowboarding showcases like the X Games and Olympics, which currently monopolize the mainstream landscape.

While most riders would be content to sit back and rest on the accolades accompanying a season like Rice is coming off of, trust me when I say that Supernatural is much more of a passion project for the protagonist of The Art Of Flight than anything else he has ever been involved in. From finding the ultimate venue and securing resources, to championing the Supernatural cause in the press, the only part of this event Rice has left to chance is the weather which is why he chose Nelson, British Columbia's Baldface Lodge to hedge his bets.

Giro: JP Tomich in Japan

By: Lindsay Fraka

One more edit from Giro reminding us how stupid we are for being anywhere else besides Japan. JP Tomich enjoys some fresh champagne powder with friends in the latest video.

Watch some cliff drops, wall rides, and snow slashes that will make you start googling flights to Japan immediately.

Red Bull Supernatural holding period begins with riders arriving at Baldface Lodge

By: Lindsay Fraka

One more groundbreaking contest in the world of snowboarding begins today outside of Nelson, B.C., Canada at Baldface Lodge. Red Bull and Travis Rice's progressive brainchild, the Red Bull Supernatural contest is the talk of the industry. The first of it's kind, T. Rice is backing it, and a backcountry contest? Snowboarders can't help but be out of their minds with excitement for the opportunity to compete, witness, or be a part of it in any way.

The invited athletes are swarming Baldface today, waiting for the single day that they will drop in to the Supernatural course that aims to find the best all around snowboarder out there.

Eighteen of the world's best snowboarders are settling into Baldface Lodge tonight (after a curling session, pictured above), as the holding period for Red Bull Supernatural begins. On only one day between today and February 8th, the 18 riders will be the first to drop into Travis Rice's dream snowboard run, competing to find out who is the best all-around snowboarder on the planet.

Red Bull Supernatural is a first-of-its-kind, backcountry snowboard competition, challenging riders' big mountain, freeride, slopestyle and big air talents all in one spectacular run.

"Scary Cherry," the run in Baldface's tenure that's been enhanced to host Red Bull Supernatural, features a variety of slope angles and natural features. It starts off with an extremely steep, over-40 degree-slope angle providing big-mountain terrain before tapering to 35 degrees where most of the 80+ wooden platforms and other features have been built.

Midway through it flattens out into a bench, providing the perfect location for Rice's dream 300-foot-wide kicker with a fresh powder landing zone. After the kicker, the slope drops to a 30-degree pitch where esteemed terrain park builder J.P. Martin, working with Rice for inspiration, planted a garden of innovative slopestyle features.

"Inspiration for the course design came from nature, straight up, and the crazy features that I've seen people ride," Rice explains. "You have to have terrain that compliments freestyle riding on all-mountain terrain, which is why we built this course from scratch. There's no limit on what is possible with a little creativity and some will."

The rider list features the additions of wild card winners Mark McMorris and Sage Kotsenburg, both 18 years old and global slopestyle leaders. Also this week, Canadian Mark Sollors has been confirmed to replace Wolfgang Nyvelt, who was forced to drop out due to injury.
