Cupcakes, kegs, blue skies, groomers and park jumps. What more could you ask for on Opening Day?
Breckenridge Ski Resort in Summit County, Colorado kicked off their 50th Anniversary Season with an awesome opening celebration on 11/11/11. Things started off bright and early as throngs of eager skiers and snowboarders made their way to the BreckConnect Gondola.
After a brief ride to the base of Peak 8, the first 1,111 shredders were greeted by employees doling out delicious Breck emblazoned cupcakes. With sugary treats in hand, riders made their way to the sprawling lift line that formed at the base of the Colorado Chair.
The National Anthem played in honor of Veteran’s Day, then lifts fired up for the season. This year, Breck gave their Facebook Fans a chance to win the highly-coveted first two chairs with a contest based on comments on their FB page. Jeremy Bergren of Longmont, Colorado was chosen for first chair because of his Veteran status and for being super psyched on all opening day festivities. The second chair went to another vet, Chris Jefferson, who is currently working towards a spot on the US Paraolympic Team, where he hopes to compete in Downhill, GS and Slalom.
As the first chairs started their initial ascent up the mountain, it was officially game on for Breckenridge’s 50th Anniversary Season.
Throughout the day, Park Lane was the site for heavy action as many shredders were throwing down on triple jump line and the jibs. Bobby Brown, Steve Fisher, and Keri Herman, members of Breck’s Pro Team, were spotted getting tricks dialed for the season.
After a few laps through the park and down the groomers, many made their way to the T-Bar where a keg of Breck’s signature 50th Anniversary Ale was tapped for those of age to enjoy.
The celebration turned up a notch when Breck’s Universally Famous Rocket Surgeons started jamming in the bar. The party-atmosphere raged on as everyone reveled in opening day awesomeness.
No opening day would be complete without opening night shenanigans, and Breck’s nightlife definitely delivered for the first time this season. As the sun set and stars began to illuminate the night sky, Main Street became filled with enthusiastic party people.
The Tall T Crew threw a party at Liquid Lounge where Jello shots and drinks flowed heavily. Over at Cecilia’s, (where only good decisions are made) Burton screened Standing Sideways and Role Model Productions played their new movie CockFight!. After the flicks, DJ Jeff Cox spun beats late into the night and the dance floor erupted in liquid-fueled jubilance.
Opening day and night in Breckenridge proved to be an awesome start to what’s sure to be an incredible season.
Big ups to Breckenridge, Vail Resorts, and Burton’s Leslie Betts for being extremely awesome.
Cheers to the Season!
